Andy was born on tues. may 27th. 2008, I woke up monday with a horrible period like cramp (something I hadn't had in 9 months) and realized that my uterus was hard as a rock with it. I had been getting braxton hicks like crazy for the past month so when I felt that, I knew that something was different. I had the cramping about once or twice an hour. My Stepmom Vera had just arrived the morning prior (thankfully!) and we were shopping on base to pick up some last minute things. All day I kept saying that I knew something was different. Well the contractions started getting more painful as the day went on and started coming more frequently. Around 5:00 pm they were about 10 minutes apart and somewhat painful so I called the labor and delivery unit and they told me to time them for the next half hour, they then picked up to 3 minutes apart so we just used that half hour to get ready to leave for the hospital. On the drive to the hospital I was cursing up a storm (uncontrollably I must add) they had gotten so bad! When I got to the hospital they hooked me up and saw that my contractions were 3 mins apart and strong so they checked my cervix and I was 4 cm dialated which is what you have to be to be admitted. The nurse looked at me and said "This is it, this is the real thing", and this rush of emotion came over me! I couldn't believe that my little boy was going to be here soon. ANd I was pretty damn proud that being my first pregnancy I never went in for a "false" alarm and knew that that was it. At that point my contractions were so strong and painful I told them "Give me the drugs!!!" So this male nurse came in to hook up my IV and stuck me 4 times before getting another nurse to come in and do it because he kept blowing my vains! I was pissed but kept my cool as much as possible. Once some medication was flowing through I felt pretty good (inbetween contractions) almost drunk actually. So a few hours go by and around midnight they checked me again and I was still at 4 cm! I had thought for sure I had made some progress, so I gladly opted for the epidural. Once that was in I was completely numb from the waist down but felt every single contraction! She loaded me with everything she possibly could but it just didn't take to one area. Then my doctor came in and decided to break my water to speed things up, and it did! My contractions were about 1 min and a half apart. They cheked me again a couple times after that and at 4:15 am I was 8 cm dialated. Well, at that point my contractions were nonstop for 15 minutes straight, the worst pain I have ever felt in my life, so they decided to check me again and at 4:30 am I was fully dialated! I couldn't beleive it! So they said it was time to start pushing. And since I couldn't feel a thing, my wonderful husband Andy held one leg up and a nurse held the other leg up. I found it quite amusing :) They also placed this huge mirror in front of me so I could see everything, all I can say is WOW! But the pushing was the most pleasant part out of the whole thing. I didn't feel anything!!! And I figured out a great pushing rythym so I was making great progress. Once the head started to crown the Doc came in and shined down the brightest light known to man on my vajay-jay and about 3 pushes later he was here! It was so amazing, they placed him right on top of me and I couldn't believe that I was finally holding and looking at this little guy that had been growing inside me, a feeling that is indescribable! He was absolutely perfect! 7 lbs 12.5oz, and 20 1/8 inches long. His apgar scores were 9 & 9 which is awesome cause the doc said that they never get 10's. After they cleaned him up and brought him to me they said that I should try to feed him, well to my surprise he latched on right away! It was such a neat feeling :) We spent the next 2 days in the hospital and then got to go home. I am loving every minute of motherhood!
