BIRTH STORY

Monday, August 10th, I received a call from my doctor about the results for the pre-eclampsia test that I had done over the weekend. I was at work at the time and missed the call, but when I got off, I checked my voice mail. It was my doctor that had called, not one of his nurses, like usual. He wanted me to call him back as soon as possible, even though he knew that I had an appointment with him that afternoon (about 45 minutes after I got off work). I called him back and he said that my results had come back positive, I had the beginnings of pre-eclampsia and he wanted me to go in that afternoon to be induced. I was a little bit in shock. I asked him if he wanted me to come down for my appointment and he said "no, I would just send you straight to the hospital anyways." So I went in at about 3 pm to be induced. I had to wait for the on call doctor to get out of delivery to start the induction, although I was given a room and started on IV fluids right away. At about 6pm the doctor (whom I had never met) came in and decided to break my water to start labor. I hadn't progressed any since the week before. Well, nothing happened after he broke my water so at 9 pm they started the pitocin drip. I progressed and in no time was having regular contractions. At about 1 am I was in a lot of pain and couldn't manage to get any sleep. (Because of the pre-eclampsia, I was pretty much confined to the bed or the chair for the duration of labor since I had to be monitored the entire time.) I got some pain medication (fentanyl) which lasted for 40 minutes and allowed me some rest. At about 2 am, the anesthesiologist was on my floor and ready to give me an epidural if I wanted one. The fentanyl had worn off, so I was in a lot of pain again and having labor shakes and was more than ready for an epidural. The epidural only worked on the left side of my body for some reason and at about 7 am, the anesthesiologist (a different one, since they had switched shifts) came back to adjust the epidural. I felt better after that. I was about 6 cm dialated and 90% effaced at 7 am. I progressed fairly quickly after that. By 11 am, I was almost completely dialated (only a small lip of cervix left) but I was feeling the urge to push. My doctor (who was in for a c-section for someone else) stopped by and said that I should go ahead and push because I was almost there and the lip would give way. My sister's doctor (who was the doctor on call for the day) came in and checked and said to go ahead and push. The charge nurse came in, checked and said to go ahead and push. So I pushed. And pushed. Awhile later my sister's doctor came in and checked again and said to stop pushing. Instead of pushing through (which is what normally happens), it had swelled. And if I didn't stop pushing and if the swelling didn't go down, I was going to have to have an emergency c-section. I was not happy with the news! And stopping pushing once you've started and are feeling the need to push is VERY hard!! I had to really try to breath through it. They lowered my pitocin and upped my epidural (giving me twice the dose). They cut me off of having any food or drink (even a sip of water) to prepare me for a c-section and even called in the surgical nurse. I was pretty freaked out. At about 3 pm my doctor stopped by to check on me. He said that I was just about ready to push. The swelling had gone down completely and the lip was almost gone (only a little bit there on one side). He said in about 15-30 minutes, I should be ready to push again. He wouldn't be there though because he had to go pick up his kids and he wasn't on call. At about 3:30 my sister's doctor came in and checked me and I was 10 cm dialated 100% effaced and at a +3 station. She told me to push and then walked out the door. Of course at that time, my husband had just left to get some food. So I sent one of the nurses to go get him from the lobby. He had already made it down to the first floor cafeteria. He came up and I was pushing. I pushed for an hour and a half. I didn't have any complications, and only one little tear. At 4:52 pm on August 11th, my son was born weighing 7lbs 9.4 oz, 21.5 inches long and perfectly healthy.
