I was scheduled for a elective C-section due to having been on strict bedrest from week 24 to week 27. The C-section was performed on the first day of the start of week 40. I had to come to the hospital at 7.30 am and I knew I was second on their list. My hubby and I could not sleep from 2am and 3.30 am we got up and watched a DVD and tried to keep our mind off the fact that the big day had arrived...We went to the hospital at 7am and waited to be prepped for the epidural. At 9am they came to prepare me and my Husband had to wait until I was anesthesiezed. The epidural took one hour (!!!) to put in place. I had to sit on the operating table and keep VERY still! Hard to do when you shake violently from fear and cold ( the OP theatre is kept kool to keep infection risk down) After a lot of fiddle around the doc said I would feel a warm sensation in my legs and I did, it felt like someone submerged them i warm water. They positioned me on the table and Adam was called in. Poor guy thought they had forgotten him and that I had given birth without him being present ;o)
They started cutting as soon as my sensation was gone and even though I was numb, I could feel a lot of poking and pushing. I was shaking so violently I thought I was going to fall off the table! I later found out it's normal when you have an epi - nobody told me at the time so I thought something was wrong with me! Suddently I heard this squeel and they lifted Daniel above the drapes! WOW!!! He was real! I managed to get 2 seconds glimpse of him before he was whisked away to the heated table. He started crying and I knew he was OK. Adam went to the table and was telling me about him all the time. They did not let me hold him at all which I'm sorry about but Adam held him and went with him when they took him away to be cleaned, weighed, measured and dressed. The docs stitched me up and I was taken to the maternity ward where Adam and son had bonded well and truly. I got to hold Daniel after 1 hour and breast fed him as well. A bit tricky when you have never done it before but somehow Daniel, of all, knew what to do and we now have the feeding down pattern...
Daniel is very calm and settled, he loves his feeds and demands them every 2 hours. As every feed takes 1 hour, it makes for some very disrupted nights!
We are very happy with the outcome, considered I went into preterm labour so early in the pregnancy. I never thought we would make 39 weeks!
