Kamryn-Dorothea`s birthstory
I took a second 3-hour glucose test at 36 weeks to find out if I get `late onset gestational diabetes`. Unfortunately, I did not pass. I spent the next 3 weeks learning how to change my diet and I had to check my blood sugar levels 4 times a day. I was able to keep my blood sugar levels low through diet and did not need any medications. My doctor was concerned about the risks associated with GD - especially the possibility of the baby being stillborn. This is more common when the pregnancy gets to 40 weeks and beyond. I resisted being induced because I heard that the contractions would be more intense and that many times induction results in a c-section. I discussed these concerns with my doctor. He said that since I have already given birth to 3 children naturally, he was certain that I would not need a c-section. He also said that he would try to let me do as much as possible on my own. Finally, we agreed to the induction for the safety of our baby.
We were scheduled to be induced on Tuesday, June 23rd at 8:00am. On Monday, June 22, I had a doctor`s appointment. I was 2 cm and my cervix was soft. My doctor `stretched` me to 3 cm in hopes that I could still go into labor on my own before morning. That evening we went for a walk to try to get things started. About midnight I started getting contractions. They were fairly strong and were 4-8 minutes apart. I thought that maybe this was it. I watched the clock and they continued until around 2 am. Then they stopped. I was so upset. Finally, about 2:30am I tried to fall asleep. My husband had the alarm set for 5:00am. I was awake from that point. I got out of bed around 6:00am to get ready and put a few last items in the hospital bag. I was so tired and nervous. I went to the bathroom several times. I think my body just knew what was about to happen. We arrived at the hospital at about 7:45 and were put in a room. I went to the bathroom again and lost a piece of my mucous plug. I got my IV and was given `breakfast in a bag` because I was a bit dehydrated. My doctor arrived at 8:30am and broke my water at 8:40am. He told the nurses to give me until 11:00am to see if labor would start on its own. I was having mild contractions but nothing real regular. At 11:15 the nurse started pitocin on the lowest possible dose to give my contractions a `nudge`. Immediately they were 5 minutes apart. After about an hour, they started getting more intense. Just before 1:00pm, the nurse checked me and I was at 4-5cm. Soon after, the contractions got more intense and closer together. Soon they seemed to be coming on top of each other and I told my husband that I wanted to push. I think it was around 1:45. My husband got the nurse. She checked me and I was at 9+cm. She called to a nurse in the hall `I need Lou now!!!` (We call my doctor Dr. Lou). My doctor was on his way to the hospital at that point. I told my husband that I was not waiting. They called for the `In house doctor`. In the mean time the urge to push was really strong. I had a contraction and just barely pushed. I said `I feel the baby`s head`, then her head just came out. The nurse quickly grabbed her and I pushed lightly again and her body came out. She was born at 1:57pm. The in house doctor grabbed her and my husband was given the scissors to cut the cord. At this point my doctor walked in and tossed his gloves to the side because he realized that he just missed it. He joked that I am so good that I didn`t even need him. I think that my body was ready. The nurse never changed me from the lowest dose of pitocin.
This was by far the easiest labor and delivery that I have had. My last two babies were over 10lbs. I think that is why Kamryn came out so quickly. She only weighed 8 lbs. I was so glad that everything went so well and quickly. Kamryn is absolutely perfect and we love her so much.
