I had a membrane sweep on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 38w2d. It caused some minor cramping and loss of MP. By Thursday, I was having consistent, non-painful contractions every 5-7 minutes. Hubby and I went to L&D that evening only to be sent home in false labor. The doctor said it could last up to 2 weeks - he was so wrong! That night, I was awakened by 3 very painful contractions, which I thought were maybe pains caused by constipation and/or gas (lol - doh!) - after all, the doctor had confirmed that I was experiencing false labor so I didn't think it was the onset of real labor! I was prepared for it to be a couple weeks before I had the baby! Friday morning, I awoke to a serious drive to clean the kitchen. After doing so, I needed to take a hot bath to relieve my discomfort - still due, I thought, to some serious constipation/gas... one bath turned into 2... 3... 4... I eventually called my husband to come home and help me cope - I felt awful! I was still having contractions about 5 mins apart, but was sure it was still false labor. I went to the store to load up on Gas-X, prune juice, prunes, etc. so I could get rid of whatever was ailing me... I even talked hubby into taking a walk with me to work out any indigestion I was having, ignoring his pleas for me to "just call L&D." Half way down the block, I could barely walk anymore and we went back home where I reluctantly called the labor deck at the hospital. I told them that I thought I was constipated and having gas pains, combined with Braxton-Hicks contractions. The nurse convinced me to come in, if only just to get a prescription that would make me feel better. My husband and I got in the car and were on our way. We didn't even grab our pillows because I was SURE I wasn't going to be admitted! I had three massive contractions in the car on the way over there, and even more as I made my way to L&D - but still, it never dawned on me that I might be in labor. The nurse at the triage desk insisted I was in labor - "I'm looking at you, and you are in labor." "No," I said, "I'm just having some gas pains." I ended up in an exam room, hooked up to the monitors, and sure enough, I was having some pretty major contractions. BUT, I still didn't believe I was in labor - after all, I had been having contractions since the day before! Finally, the doctor came in and checked me - I was 5cm and 90% effaced!!! "No way, are you serious?" The doctor looked at me funny and said, "Yes, and wre are going to have to admit you." My only response was, "So, I'm in labor?" LOL! Unfortunately for me, 12 other babies were being born at that time and they had no beds - they asked if I wanted to stay in the triage room or go for a walk for a couple hours until a bed opened up - I opted for a walk, but didn't make it very far before I returned to L&D with contractions 2-3 minutes apart. Thankfully, they had a room open by then and I was checked in. I had asked for an epidural and they said it would be a little while before I got one, since they were so busy - "a little while" would mean 6 HOURS later! I ended up getting Fentanyl through my IV because the pain was becoming too much. It helped, but only for about an hour or two. Still, I was grateful for the relief and eventually, I got the epidural and obviously felt soooo much better! After 11 or so hours of laboring in the hospital, it was time to push :) I pushed for about an hour and it was amazing - I was giving birth to my son! I barely felt the head crown, and felt absolutely no pain, but I did feel the body deliver and it was a really strange sensation - still, no pain though. The epidural worked really well - almost too well, as I could barely feel when I was having a contraction and needed to push. I ended up with a 2nd-degree tear during delivery, and I think it was because I couldn't feel the pressure of the baby's head coming out. I don't know that I would have torn so badly if I had not had such a strong epidural - it was a comfortable delivery, but the recovery was very difficult and painful. Isaac took his first breath at 6:41am, weighing 7lbs even and measuring 20" - a perfect baby boy! :) He had passed meconium during delivery so the pediatricians had to be there to suction his airway right when he was born, but all turned out well and he was just fine. His APGAR score was 8/9, with color receiving a 0 and then a 1 - he continued to pink up and his color was no longer a concern. The afterbirth was delivered immediately after the baby and I was stitched up (which took about 45 mins) - then I was finally able to hold my baby! It was such a miraculous moment, despite my serious fatigue :) I was so tired but so happy! We spent a couple of hours in the labor room recovering and eating some food (I was soooo hungry too!) and trying to breastfeed, before we were moved to our postnatal unit where we spent the next 24 hours getting to know each other. We were discharged from the hospital on Sunday, 9/30, in great health and ready to begin our new life together as a family of 3.
