At about 34 weeks I started having contractions and found out I was dilated 1 cm and cervix was very soft. I was SO worried that he was going to come early. Weeks went by and I was still having contractions but they never got so bad that I needed to go to the hospital. They would get down to between 1-4 minutes and by the next morning they would taper off and I would have them sporadically throughout the day. As it turns out I was in prodromal, or latent, labor. Basically, this means that the 12-24 hours of early labor most women have was spread out over several weeks. For some women, this situation can be really bad. Contractions can be painful and intense; not to mention, thinking you are going into labor night after night with no success. April 27th was my due date, and my birthday as well, and the night before I was having the same crampy and regular contractions that I had grown so used to. They stuck with me through the night and into the next morning. On the 27th, we had an appt for a NST (and like I mentioned, it was my bday) so hubby wanted me to go to work with him. We went to our NST and I was having contractions every 1-4 minutes. They asked if I would like to be checked and I am like "Heck YEAH!" I also asked the doctor if she would strip my membranes again and be rough. After that the contractions got stronger and more uncomfortable-- but still manageable. So I went back to work with DH and a few hours later I noticed some bright red blood. I wasn't too worried but I also wanted to play it safe so I asked DH to take me to the hospital. Apparentely, he didn't understand and said he had to go to a meeting- I say "Okay, but as soon as you are done we should go." When he gets back from his meeting I am waiting, bag in hand, and he says "I can't leave right now I have another meeting in an hour." I'm like "Babe, we have to go now." Haha! I think he may have been in denial or something!
We went to OB triage and they set me up with monitors and all that, and when they checked me I was at 4-5 cm. This was around 3:00 pm. By 10 pm I was only at 5cm but could be stretched to 7cm...where did 6 go? LOL Anyway, so they broke my water and within the first three contractions afterward I had decided to get an epidural! I was writhing in pain! When I was about to crawl up the wall, the anestiesologist finally arrived! For some reason, it only numbed my right side so they were giving me more and more doses. The numbness started to spread to my left side but left a 'window' in my pelvis that I could feel every contraction. It was statring to make me sick to my stomach. They gave me some more potent drugs and had me shift positions and finally it worked and my left side was numb. Because of all the extra meds, my right side was completely numb and limp! The nurse said she was going to check me so I was trying to get into position and when I looked down she already had my right leg open!!! LMAO I couldn't feel anything!
I pushed for about 30 minutes and out came my little man! I only had a minor tear that required one stitch, but I got plenty of skidmarks think of a run in nylons)! They burn when you pee!
When they set him on my belly, it felt like the world stopped! I am still in awe at what a beautiful and perfect little creature we made! I am SO IN LOVE!
