Kian`s birthstory
Boy, how do I fill in all that happened on this birth? Well, I began labor three days before my son was born. I live 40 min. from the hospital without rush hour traffic so after going to the hospital the first time and being sent home my parents, who live an hour from the hospital coming from the other direction, were kind enough to get a nice hotel suite right by the hospital for me to labor in until I was ready to be checked in. The second day I went to the hospital I still wasn't dilated enough. I spent an hour walking around the hospital and they checked again, still nothing. This was especially frustrating because when I was at the hotel I would have strong contractions one right after another and then on the drive to the hospital they would inevitable wane. The contractions were also strong enough that they would wake me up, so for those three days I did not sleep longer than 10 min. at a time. And I could not eat because I would throw up when a strong contraction came on.
So, by the time they did admit me to the hospital I was already very worn out. I continued to labor all day, but was not dilating. That last day I walked almost the whole day away trying to get myself to open. By the time evening came I was still only at 7 cm. Baby and mom were getting tired and the midwife suggested we break my water. We gave it a shot but still it did nothing. After a while we discussed other options. It was time. I very much wanted a natural birth, but I had been in labor so long my uterus was wore out and my body wasn't progressing. We decided that I needed to have pitocin to make the contractions stronger. However, I was already in so much pain from the contractions I had been having for so long that I knew I wouldn't be able to handle the stronger ones from the pitocin. Reluctantly, yet with some relief, I got an epidural to help my body to finally relax a bit.
What a relief that was! I did not hurt and I had a few hours that I actually enjoyed the birth. I smiled, talked to my family, and anticipated what was to come. After a few hours and more pitocin I still wasn't dilating. My body was just wore out. The possibility of a c-section was becoming evident. My midwife checked in and decided to up the pitocin and give me and baby a little more time. He was starting to show signs of distress so we had to be careful. I cried a little because I really wanted to experience a vaginal birth and we all prayed.
The next time the midwife came in I expected more of the same. She checked me out and said "push", just like that. I couldn't believe it. Suddenly, I was having the baby! I was numb from the epidural and couldn't quite feel where to push so she let it wear off and I spent the next two and a half hours pushing. Wow, did it hurt!! By the time he crowned I made them give me more of the epidural even though he was almost out. I didn't want to feel the pressure any more!
The truly beautiful thing about Kian's birth is his Daddy got to deliver him. I felt his head as he crowned and after his head came out I pushed one more time and the midwife had Derrick pull his shoulders out. I had to push again and that time she let me reach down to pull him out, but I couldn't on my own. My husband helped and he was born. It was so beautiful. He looked perfect. I held him at my chest for a while and after Derrick cut the cord the baby went to the warming bed in the room to clear away some mucous.
We spent two more days in the hospital after that. My uterus was so worn out it couldn't deliver the placenta. The doctor had to come in and remove it in pieces. I ended up loosing a liter of blood. I didn't tear and at home my only real recovery was swelling. Baby is healthy and doing fine. We are so grateful to have a healthy baby! When he came out he looked beautiful right away. No red, wrinkly face, but creamy, smooth skin and a peaceful countenance that has remained. We are truly blessed.
Thank you all for your support throughout the pregnancy. I hope to see you all in the baby section and to continue on our journey of Motherhood together. :)
