Kyelah-Mae-Wright`s birthstory

Ok so being a mummy is nothing like what I was expecting... don’t really know what I was expecting to be honest. I guess I had just prepared myself for it to be a lot harder than it is... (mind you, my baby girl is still only 4 days old). So how DID the whole labour/birth go??? Here’s my story!!
Firstly according to my mum it was a “text-book labour/delivery”. So yes I do feel like I was incredibly lucky. I always did have an instinct that she would come early... especially because I had already ended up in hospital twice because of little scares from her... first was pre-term labour at just 28 weeks then I was in hospital again after a rather heavy bleed at 35weeks. So despite everyone saying she would go past due date being a first baby... I went into labour at about 10:30pm on Friday 15th May... at 38 weeks pregnant to the day ...And I didn’t even know it. lol
I had consistent cramping feelings down there, but at the time I had just put it all down to Braxton hicks or ‘practise labour’ contractions (which I had read about just that day). Only sign was that I had been leaking fluid all of the day before... again I had just thought (as some mums experience this) that she was on my bladder and I was just peeing a little. (just seems a little embarrassing... lol)
Anyway I went to bed at 11pm but woke consistently throughout the night because of the cramping which seemed to be getting worse and stronger. SOMEHOW I kept going back to sleep but at 430am those cramps became painful and rather close together... I went to the toilet and (luckily I WAS over the toilet) but my waters broke... a large gush of fluid came out. I sat there kind of stunned wondering if ‘yes’ I had in fact gone into labour and wow ‘yes’ my water HAD broken.... then the nerves set in...
I sat on the toilet for awhile and Sam eventually realised that I wasn’t in bed and that it had been an extended toilet trip and yelled out to see if I was ok. I yelled back... “I think you should get ready coz I`m pretty sure I`m in labour!!!” Ive never seen him move so fast. Are you sure? Really? What’s it like? What’s happening? Are you in pain? Are there contractions? How far along? Should we go to the hospital right now? Who do I ring? Do I ring the hospital? Where’s the number? What do I do? Should I get stuff ready??? Are you sure your in labour?! “YES!! It bloody hurrrrrrrrts!” (says I, whilst biting my lip)
...So I started moving around the house like a madwoman trying to grab things that id need, in between dropping to the ground to deal with contractions every 3-4 minutes. And the lovely dashes to the loo as well because the joyous bowls had opened up. I rang the hospital told them I was in labour and that I was coming in. And rang mum in the car to tell her all systems were a-go. Going breeeeeeath, in, out, in, out... lol I was timing the contractions the whole drive in.
We were in the car and made it to the hospital by 6am by now my contractions were pretty full-on, straight into the birthing suite I was checked and dilated at 4/5 centimetres. Whooooooo! I spent the next few hours in the shower sitting on the ground on my knees breathing through contractions. Its funny you do wonder, these hospitals must use ALOT of water... anyway I got up onto the bed on my side, sucking HARD on the gas for awhile, (I put off using the gas until I really HAD to) mum was really good telling me to count how many breaths id take each contraction, its good because you set your mind that ‘yes you take three really good sucks and three more to get through each contraction’. It’s a mind deterrent for each of the up-coming contractions. And the rest followed through. I got to one point where I felt like snapping at the midwife telling me to “just breath hunny... you’re doing really really well”... couldn’t she tell....?! I WAS BREATHING... DAMMIT SHUTUP!!!...
I got up onto my hand and knees and did the last bit of the pushing my god there was a moment I was yelling I CANT DO IT... I CANT... I JUST CANT... (I heard the midwife telling Sam it was normal for mums to say that at that point in labour and to not worry because I could do it...) I was of course arguing in my head but you know you have no choice but to scream and push. Mum encouraged Sam to go down to watch her come out, I`m glad she did and I know he is too. He wouldn’t have done it otherwise because he was freaking out so much. More nerves than anything.
Anyway Kyelah Mae Wright was born at 8:59am Saturday the 16th of May 2009. She weighed in at 7lbs 4oz and was 51cm long. I had been 38weeks pregnant to the day. And uncannily enough that day was the exact day Sam had proposed to me a year ago.
I held my baby girl and cried... my god I cried, Sam was crying too. Ive never seen anything more beautiful. Mum said she started crying as soon as she seen Sam crying so it was emotional all round. Sams hand was shaking so much when he cut the cord, I was so proud of him...! =) I didn’t need any stitches, I only had a few grazes (which make peeing after SOOOOO painful)... but I was really lucky in the end. A “text-book birth”.
I still spent 3 nights in hospital, because she had a touch of Jaundice and she wasn’t feeding for very long on the boob but now we are home, she is officially 4 days old, my boobs turned “Dolly Parton” overnight and now that is my only concern! They HURT. Oh that and I`m a touch on the tired side. Lol I don’t know what’s more exhausting... no sleep or the stream of visitors.... lol both I guess but hay it’s nice to see so many people, family and friends who really care. We have some awesome people around us, it’s great.
Well Kyelah is awake and due for a feed.... wishing all you mummies and soon-to be mummies out there the very best. Baby dust to everyone. It really is worth every second of the wait. =)

Birth details

Original due date: 01/01/2012
Type of delivery: Vaginal (with pain relief)
Duration of labor: 5 hours
Weight @ birth: 8lbs 2oz
Length @ birth: 56cm

Well… to begin with, never ever ever did i imagine that i was going to go overdue with this pregnancy, and for nearly three weeks i anxiously anticipated labour with every single little "feeling" my body gave me. Needless to say i went 40 weeks and 5 days past my EDD and at 12:30am on January the 6th of 2012 labour began!

I had been up to pee 4 times before midnight already and half expected my waters to break each time i went (as this is what happened with Kyelah's birth) I woke up at 1230am with period like cramps, and wet undies. I immediately i knew this was going to be it, i suspected my waters were leaking… when it ran down my leg it confirmed it! After all those false alarms and searching for symptoms or signs from my body, these cramping feelings triggered a memory from Kyelah's labour. I lay in bed as each mild contraction passed, slowly they intensified and by watching the clock they were ten minutes apart. I couldn't sleep so i got up and ate a bowl of cereal and packed my bag for hospital. I was trying to prepare myself mentally for what was about to come… as the contractions became stronger and closer together. By 330am they were 5 minutes apart, I could feel him wriggling heaps and the contractions were beginning to really hurt. At this point I told Sam to start getting ready if he didn't want to be rushed. I rang my midwife first, then called mum. At 4am we were in the car heading for the Mater Mothers hospital in Brisbane. I was checked into a delivery room by 430. Lyndsay, my midwife arrived and shortly after my mum and her husband, Nathan.

I was checked internally and was 6cm dilated, she laughed at me because i was still smiling and sitting up in bed considering how far along the labour already was and then thanked me for letting her get some extra sleepand calling her at the last possible moment rather than at 1230 when it all first began. (I knew that there was no point in calling or going into hospital until your contractions were quite close together).

The next few hours were a blur. I changed into a nightgown and sat on a birthing ball. I held off on any pain relief until I really felt like I couldn't handle it anymore and even then I didn’t use it much! I remember counting 4 contractions in a ten minute time frame at 520am. I remember having this urge to get up on my knees all of a sudden and felt the overwhelming and unstoppable need to push… I didn't think I was that far along because I didn't have a bloody show, nor had my waters broken yet. During the first major push, my waters broke. on the third wave of contractions and pushing his head came out, I felt like my legs were going to give way… my body gave me a minute rest before I the final contraction pushed his body out, and Kaeden Lee Wright was born at 624am weighing 8lbs 2oz. His head circumference was 35.5cms (the same as his sisters) but he is 5cms longer than her at 56cm long.

He is a typical boy, loves the boob. The minute he was put on my chest he was searching for it, mouth wide open.

So in total I had roughly a 5 hour labour (about the same as Kyelah's) and a small tear, though because of where it is the midwife said it would heal pretty fast without the need for a stitch. I left the hospital around 2 that afternoon!! Today is day 5 at home, my milk came in 2 days ago and Kaeden is breastfeeding like a champ. Today my poor rockmelons seem to be settling a little. Our sleeping is all out of whack though, we appear to be on UK time… lol I get about 4 - 5 hours of broken sleep a night. Kyelah is a great big sister, she is so bemused by him and loves helping me to do everything. I am so proud of her. :)
