McKenna-Grace`s birthstory

Everything went really well. Actually, I`m very, very, very lucky and blessed! I started getting contractions around 10:00 PM Tuesday night. But, being a first time mommy (and feeling stupid), I didn`t know if it was contractions or not.? So, I figured it wasn`t - because everyone says, you will know.... It just felt like period cramps. So, I took a bath to try and relax (I love baths). Got out and was still having them. We finally started timing them around midnight. They still weren`t strong - as in they didn`t `hurt` - just uncomfortable. They were about 5 min apart. But, I still wasn`t sure... We finally called the doctor around 1:00 AM. You have to leave a message with the service and then the doc on call calls you back. So, she called me back, I told her what I was feeling, and she said to go ahead to the hospital and just have them check me out. In the mean time - Brian and I are running around throwing last minute things into the hospital bag. We packed entirely way too much, but how did we know? So, we got to the hospital at 2:29 AM. Got into the pre-stage room (where they check you out for dialation, etc). Finally someone came in and checked me out and I was 3 cm. She (the doc) said she would come back in an hour and check me again - to make sure I was progressing. In the mean time, I was SO uncomfortable. I couldn`t lay on the bed, I couldn`t stand. All I wanted to do was sit on the toilet. I guess that `s the only place I could get relief. I kept feeling like I needed to push (even if just to pee a little bit). They wouldn`t let me sit on the toilet because they had to have the monitors hooked up to my belly (to monitor baby and me). I found some relief by standing on the side of the bed leaning a bit with my hands on the bed. Anyway, the contractions were now getting pretty serious and much closer together. FINALLY the doc comes back in to check me again. She says `I can`t believe it. You`ve went from a 3 to a 9!`. A cloud of nervousness swept over me. The first thing I thought was...is it too late for an epidural? I was
scared. The doc left the room to call the delivery room and let them know we were coming NOW. They were wheeling me down the hall and I`m saying I have to push! They`re telling me, don`t push! Yeah - try that!!! Not easy! They had me lay on my left side - I guess so I wouldn`t push. I was pushing anyway - and peeing on myself. I kept telling the nurse, `I just peed on myself, I`m so sorry.` She said, it`s ok, don`t worry about it. I got to the delivery room (and the contractions were fast and furious at this point). They asked if I still wanted an epidural and I said yes. They called for the anesthesiologist. A nurse was going to hook an IV up to give me something to take the edge off. She was prepping my arm and I was having a contraction - so she stopped. I pushed, and I could feel her head. A nurse was `down there` and yelled `get the doctor in here! We`re having a baby NOW!` I pushed again and felt my water break. A doc came in (a resident on duty - my doc didn`t make it in time) - she`s got one glove on yelling `get me another glove!`. A really great nurse was standing on my left side telling me to breathe like I was blowing out candles. I was trying... Brian was also on my left side - up by my head. I know he was scared. He could tell how much pain I was in, and he saw the look of fear in my eyes when I realized it was too late for pain medication. Two nurses each held my legs up (as if in stirrups) and one was telling me to push and count. Crazy! I completely forgot that I was supposed to do that! So, another push, and I felt my waterbreak. I said `my water just broke`. The next push, her head was out. The next one and I felt her shoulders and body come out. And there she was. They quickly wiped her off and set her on my chest. It was COMPLETELY AMAZING! She laid there for a few minutes, then they weighed her and measured and APGAR test. She scored an 8 and then a 9. There were like 12 people in the room. No dignity, let me tell you... My doc walked in about this time...a little late. LOL
They delivered the placenta. Which I always thought I would have a contraction and I would push it out. But the docs push on your stomach and deliver it. It took about 20 minutes of them pushing on my belly and rubbing it downwards. A little uncomfortable, and seemed to take forever. I also had a 2nd degree tear - so I had to get a few stitches. They gave me a local to numb the area. The intern sewed me up. This took about 30 minutes. Then it was done! Crazy!!! No meds, quick labor, a perfect little baby girl, a wonderful supportive husband (who`s forearm I squeezed so hard during labor I`m surprised it isn`t bruised...) Anyway, she`s healthy, nursing (my milk came in on Friday)...I love to just look at her, listen to her breathe, let her lay on my bare chest and feel her soft skin. It`s crazy to look at her and realize that that`s what she looked like inside of me. She really was a little person in there... I`m in love.
