Well ladies, Emma was born on Friday Dec 21, 2007 at 3:09 pm. On Thurs the 20th, I went to the Dr for a biophysical u/s and he estimated the baby`s weight at 8.7 lbs. He examined me and I still had not effaced, and was 1 cm dilated. The baby was still floating and had not descended into my pelvis. My doctor met with my husband and me and gave us a couple of options, we could go with a planned c-section the next day ( 21st), or he could try to induce me. I asked him about each option, and he said that in his opinion, and based on his experience, he did not think this baby would descend into my pelvis even after induction. What would happen mostl likely would be that I would be induced, go into labor, and need an emergency C-section at some point, due to distress for me or the baby or both. Also, there would be a chance that my uterus could be permanently damaged. So, my hubby and I decided on the planned c-section the following day,
I arrived at the hosp at 1pm. My c-section was scheduled for 2:30. They took me to the Antenatal unit where I was given an IV. My hubby and cousin were there, and were videotaping us and taking pics, trying to lighten the mood. I was very nervous. After getting hooked up to the IV, I met with the anesthesiologist, who explained what a spinal was, and what he was going to do. He told me that in rare occasions, spinals don`t work, and they use general anesthesia. Thereafter, my doc came in to say hello, and ask the nurse if everything was all set. My husband and cousin were given scrubs and told to wait in the room until the nurse came to get them. I was then walked by a nurse to the operating room. I was told to sit on the bed, and curl forward, leaning into the nurse, forming a c with my back. The anestheseologist then attempted to give me a spinal. This was by far the worst part of the whole thing. it took the anestheseologist about 15 minutes to do the spinal, and it HURT! I was shaking very badly. Finally, he got it in,and I was helped to lie on my back. My legs were starting to feel heavy, and I was given an oxygen mask. My blood pressure and heartbeat were being monitored. The anestheologist was above my head, and I could see my doc scrubbing up. He then came over with another doc who introduced herself, and told me she`s be assisting in the surgery. At that point, my husband and cousin came in, and sat by my head. My husband began to massage my temple, as I began to cry, being fearful of the unknown. My cousin kept talking to me, telling me to relax. The anestheologist kept saying `you`re doing well, continue to take deep breathsl` . The doc then asked me if I could feel a sharp instrument he was using, and I said no. He said I would not be feeling any pain, only pressure, and tugging. He was right. For the next 10 minutes or so I just felt a lot of pushing and pulling, and I calmed down a bit. My doc was laughing and talking with the other doctor, and my cousin kept telling me to listen to the doc, and feel reassured by how relaxed he was.
After what seemed like an eternity, I heard one doc say `she`s a cutie!`, I then heard a suction, followed by a pull, and the baby was out. She was held over the curtain for me to see her, and I heard her let out a cry. I started to cry uncontrollably, feeling overwhelmed with joy at the birth of my daughter, and relief that she was ok, and that the operation was almost over. My husband kept saying I was going to make him cry too if I continued, and telling me what a nice job I had done. My husband and cousin then went over to the other side of the room to videotape and take photos of the baby. My hubby cut the cord, and I heard the nurses asking him and my cousin what they thought the baby weighed. My husband told them that I had said 8.4 and he had said 8.3. I then heard the nurse say 8.0 even. The doc then asked the weight, and the nurse again repeated it. She then got on a phone and called someone to tell them the baby was born at 3:09, weighing 8.0 lbs.
Listening to everyone calmed my nerves, since I couldn`t see what was happening. I heard my doc say to me that the baby was still floating, and nowhere near my pelvis. Finally, I heard someone say `daddy you can take the baby to her mom`. I then saw my hubby walking over with Emma. She was all swaddled up, with a cap on her head, but I could see dark hair poking out underneath. I kept staring at her in amazement. I couldn`t hold her, since my arms were still strapped in, so I just watched her. My husband explained what had been done on the other side, apgar, etc.
About an hour after it all started, I was wheeled into recovery, with my husband walking beside me, pushing the baby crib. In the recovery room, I was finally given my baby to hold and taught how to nurse her. I was given ice chips for my thirst, and finally transferred 2 hours later to my own room. I was feeling nauseous, but not feeling much pain. The pain came that night, after the anesthesia started wearing off. The nurse tried to get me to stand up and walk within 12 hours of the surgery, but I couldn`t. I did start walking within 24 hours though. I was in the hospital for 4 days, and improved streadily. Right now I feel soreness, but no sharp pains.
Emma was worth all the pain. I can`t believe how much I love my little girl. She is perfect, and I feel truly blessed to have her in my life. I love being a mom. I will be posting pics of her soon.
