Addysen-Jorja-Claggett`s birthstory
WARNING: VERY LONG
As far as Bank Holidays go in England, they are usually pretty crap with crap weather!
Well this Bank Holiday was one of the BEST I have ever had ;o)
Monday 31st August 2009, I wake at 7.15 desperate for a pee (lol) off I wander to the bathroom, feeling a little rough, but I put that down to being tired. After my bathroom trip, I had a little pain, nothing too intense, so I decided to stay up. I done the washing up and cleaned the kitchen, then decided a nice cuppa would make me feel better. All the while the little pain, now became pains, and a lot more frequent. So I started to time them, from about 7.30, they were every 10mins or so.
I then decided to take a bath, still with cup of tea in hand, I go up stairs and ask Darren how he feels `about having our baby today` well the look on his face, was priceless! He got out of bed whilst I got in the bath. The bath did help, but the contractions wore off a bit, so I thought maybe they were a false alarm, as I am in there, I try and take my mind off it by stating that I couldnt possibly go into hospital with dirty feet!!!! lol! Darren said that was the least of my worries, then went on to ask if he would have time to go to the local rubbish tip!!! Eh no lol!. As for the false alarm oh how wrong I was! No sooner had I got out the bath, and about to brush my teeth, Darren walked into to bathroom just as a really painful contraction started, it was so intense, I dropped my toothbrush, and nearly ripped the sink from the wall for holding on to it so tightly!!! I decided maybe it best to call the midwife and birthing unit. Whilst I was on the phone, the midwife (who I have seen a few times) was asking me questions, I told her the contractions were somewhere between 10 and 7 minutes apart. But no sooner had I said that, it felt like two came at once. She said I had better go in to be checked, as they were a lot less than I had said.
We left home about 9.15, and got to the hospital around 9.20 (its only up the road luckly) My midwife showed us to a room, but said she couldnt stay as she had home visits to do, and would send in someone straight away. She did promise to come back later to check on me (she is very sweet) Two ladies appeared in the room, just as I was breathing out a contraction. One being a student, which I didnt mind at all. They went through a load of questions with me, as I was pearched on the edge of the bed, and with each contraction, I told them `give me a minute, and i`ll get back to you` lol! (where did that come from) so Darren was given the task of counting contractions, whilst I breathed though them, and in between answering questions. The contractions their selves were odd, in that, I would have one that was mild, then the next would be intense, and then the next would be like two together. Somehow I managed to transfer to a birthing ball, which Darren found amusing, as he said if only it has ears, it would be giant space hopper! lol! However, he would crack jokes right as a contraction started, so it was very hard for me to laugh and breath at the same time lol! Then the funniest bit was the student midwife, explaining how a contraction was like pulling on a turtle neck jumper!!!!! Yep thats right, she said those exact words. Now at the time I was just reaching another contraction, me and Darren really had to stop our selves from crying with laughter. So after the turtle neck description, the other midwife thought it best to check how dilated I was. I vaguely remember saying something along the lines of `if I am only 1cm, I am going to be pissed` lol! This was only because we had received a message to say a friend of ours was in labour, and we were due the same day, so it became a bit of a race lol! Anyway it turned out I was 4cm yay :o) I wasnt planning a water birth, I just wanted as natural as possible. So they started to fill the bath for me, no sooner had I got in, it was like the pain disappeared (well for a bit a least)
At this point I had lost all track of time. As I was in the water, my contractions seem to be less intense, the midwife said that the water can do one of two things, make you dilated quicker or slower, so that the pain may seem to disappear. But after what felt like a few minutes they got worse. The student midwife then suggested running warm water over my back as thats where most of the pain came from. She accidently turned it to cold, and I mean freezing. But it felt soooooo good, I told her `NOT` to take it away lol!
As the contractions became more and more intense Darren decided I should try the gas and air, I think I had two sucks of it, and told him to `get it away from me` clearly I didnt like that! The student midwife was fantastic, although we did find her over the top at first, she was the typical earth mother type, saying stuff like `think of it as being on a boat and hitting a rough wave, with every contraction, thats one less wave you have to deal with etc etc` However I can not fault her, she was brilliant. As the other midwife walked out the room, I had the most horrendous contraction and started pushing. she explained to Darren I was involuntary pushing and that I wasnt ready.
After a lot of `involuntary` pushing, the midwife then checked again using a mirror, and said `actually, the babys head is right there!` I then had to turn length ways in the pool, so the midwifes could get a better idea of what was going on, and for a better `view` lol
So stage one of labour was over after 6hrs 48mins. Now the hard work begun! My contractions were a bit up and down really, they were either mild or really full on. But with each one I pushed as hard as I could, to the point of thinking I was going to be sick! I did have the `I cant do this, its too hard` phase, but then I had a new lease of energy and wasnt going to let it get the better of me. All the while I was pushing, I was actually thinking of everything I had been through over the last year, and I think that helped, because if I could get through that, then I could certainly give birth.
After 46minutes, our beautiful daughter was born at 15:34pm, weighing a whopping 9lb! (where was she hiding? I didnt even feel that big! lol) . The first thing I said was `Doodie, look what we did` then I wished Addysen a Happy Birthday. Darren was in tears (which he was convienced he wouldnt be lol!) As I sat there in the gooey water, I remember feeling and saying `oh my god I feel so much better` lol. Then we sat waiting for the cord to stop pulsing as I said I wanted to deliver the placenta naturally.
Well this is where the problems started. I sat with her on the step of the bath, whilst the midwife cut the cord (Darren got squemish at this point) As I was about to stand up, I came over all dizzy and lost my hearing. Once it returned they got me on the bed to deliver the placenta, I was lying there, with Addysen feeding and having to push at the same time, which was very daunting. The midwife was becoming concerned, and said she would need a doctor, to take a look. I then started feeing dizzy again, although I was lying flat, so they took Addysen off of me, and asked me to push on the next contraction, as I did, there was a pop, and gush of water followed by a huge clot (nice!) now considering my water had already broke, I panicked because I didnt know what was going on. The doctor came in and examined me, talking amongst there selves, I heard the doctor say, `she needs surgery as its been in there over an hour`. I saw Darrens face had sheer panick all over it (bless him) I then started to panick even more, and pleaded with them not to put me under, and not to let anything happen to me. I wanted Darren to come with me, but was told someone had to look after baby (talk about thrown in the deep end!) So the student midwife came instead, she was so good. I then get wheeled off to theatre, where I was given an epidural, and I have to say I NEVER want another one! Because I was already scared, as soon as it went in, I passed out! I could hear everyone saying `stay with us` but couldnt focus, or speak. When I eventually came too, it was all over. I felt awful, and couldnt stop shaking, it turned out I lost 2litres of blood, and had a bad reaction to the epidural (great!) I was then given a blood transfusion and put on all sorts of drips and monitors. Third stage of labour, 2hours and 16minutes! Duration of labour 9hours 50minutes!
I didnt get to hold Addysen, again until 8am the next morning and felt completely helpless. Just staring at her through her crib next to my bed, her big eyes staring back (my eyes feel with tears everytime I think about it)
Now we are home, and all is good :o) I feel so so much better, and Addysen is a absolute dream. She is so good, and a very relaxed, laid back baby :o) Darren is smitten with her, although is finding holding her right a problem, and gets frustrated because he cant do it, and doesnt feel comfortable. He will get there, I will make sure he does ;o)
Sorry its so long, but I just love a drama lol!
