My estimated due date was May 1, 2008. On April 30, 2008, I was still pregnant and showing no signs of imminent labor. I had a doctor's appointment on that day and we scheduled and induction date of May 6, 2008 at 8 p.m. Yay. So that sounds pretty easy right? I go in Tuesday and have her by Wednesday. No. Let me tell you how things really went down.
I went in on Tuesday signed and filled out paperwork, answered questions, get hooked up to monitors and whatnot yada, yada, yada. By 10 p.m. they inserted the Cervidil into my cervix and a few hours later (I forget how many) they took the Cervidil out and started my on Pitocin to get labor underway. Well, nothing happened. By 2:30 p.m., after about 7 hours of the Pitocin drip, I was still fingertip dilated, not effaced, and obviously not progressing. They discontinued the drip at this point and my doctor advised me that we would restart everything again that night at 10 p.m. and if nothing happened I would go in for a c-section. Great, just exactly what I was trying to avoid. It was bad enough I already felt gypped that my body didn’t go into labor naturally (I wanted the excitement of my water breaking and rushing to the hospital – I’m a total dork, I know) now there was a possibility that I might not even give birth naturally. Anyway, they ordered dinner for my and my nurse (she was absolutely WONDERFUL) let me take a shower. I felt brand new and ready to begin!
So, we restarted everything again at about 10 p.m. on Wednesday night. At 2:32 a.m. she came into my room to remove the Cervidil and woke me up telling me my water broke! WHAT!?!? I asked her if she thought she might have broken it when she was taking out the Cervidil – not likely. So, yea, my water broke on its own and I slept through it!! She checked me and I was about 2 cm dilated at this point and in labor!! YAY!! Since I had gotten a sleeping pill I fell back asleep after I went to the bathroom and got somewhat cleaned up (kinda hard since I kept leaking amniotic fluid, sorry if TMI). Anyway, at about 6 a.m. I called my mom and let her know the news. She called Raul and by 7:30 they were both there with me.
Since I was technically supposed to have her the day before (Wednesday) Raul couldn’t take another day off work so he left at about 8:30 a.m. we agreed I would call him if anything. At this time, my contractions were getting stronger and I asked for something. I was given a shot to take the “edge” off. About 1 ½ hours later the shot wore off and I asked for some more. Well it didn’t work. I endured the pain, was shaking and in-between hot and cold sweats for about an hour before I said f@%k this. I’m not trying to be a martyr. Nope, nope I ain’t trying to be a hero. I called the nurse and asked for my epidural (I was about 4 cm dilated at this point.) So my hero, thereby called an anesthesiologist came (15 minutes later) and gave me this wonderful drug. AHHHHH!!! I slept some more (I pretty much slept throughout my entire labor. An hour or so later, the nurse checked me and I was 6 cm dilated. At this point, I called Raul thinking it would give him enough time, being that he works in Newark to make it and bring Mami something to eat. My mom had been with me the whole day.
At about 2:15-2:30 my doctor came in and I was fully dilated. I kinda thought so cause I was kinda feeling the urge to push (the epidural must have been just about wearing off) but since I was new the this whole “childbirth” ordeal, I didn’t mention anything. Duh. Ok. So it was time to start pushing. They started prepping the room and the doctor went to scrub up. Shit! Raul wasn’t there yet!! ARGH! WTF!! The nurse said to start pushing like I was taking the biggest poop ever…uh, okay…I asked what if I pooped for real. She said good, that meant I was pushing the right way. Eww. Luckily, I had thought about this before and I pooped earlier in the day (sorry TMI) but I was not about to go through that embarrassment. So, I started pushing – with little effort. I kept looking at the clock and door waiting for Raul to walk in. It would devastate him if he wasn’t present for the birth of his daughter. They kept prepping but I wanted to keep buying time so I told them I couldn’t hold my legs up cause they felt too heavy (which was true). So they put the stirrups up. Ahhh, music to my ears I heard the doctor say “oh, just in time!!” and Raul walks in with a bag of Burger King! LOL.
Now were ready to rock! Push, Push, Push, Push. A little more push, push, push…Raul says encouragingly “c’mon babe, the head is right there! She’s got a lot of hair!!” Push, push, push. Gosh, I was getting tired. Then I heard it! Her cry! I laid my head back. The nurse says “look up, look at your baby.” Wow. I became a mother. I laid my head back again. I didn’t cry (I’m not much of a cryer) but I did feel this overwhelming warm tingly feeling throughout my body. I say it was another soul entering my body. My daughter.
She came into the world weighing in at 8 pounds 7 ounces and 21 inches. (No wonder I couldn’t breathe!!)
