Joseph-Louis-Jr.`s birthstory

Sunday afternoon I felt great and was planning on going to work on Monday morning. About 2:45 pm we had sex and laid down for a nap. We were snuggling and my DH was asking me if I was feeling anything because he could tell I was having contractions. By 3:45 pm I was having strong contractions about 5 minutes apart. My blood pressure had been running a little high, so I went in (after calling my DR) to get checked out. I was 4 cm and 75% effaced. I walked for an hour and made no progress, but was still having regular contractions. I opted to go home for a while. I came home, had a little snack and took a bath, by 9:30pm, contractions were 2-3 minutes apart and all in my back, so back to the hospital.

At check in, I was 5cm dialated. From 10:00 pm to 5:30 am Iabored naturally through contractions, all in my back, coming 1-2 minutes apart and very strong. I finally had the nurse check me at 5:30am because I was convinced I`d be pushing soon (and was in tons of pain). I was still 5cm dialated and 80% effaced, no progress from the night before. So, I was hooked back on the monitors and it showed that my contractions were starting to space out some and slow down. I was very discouraged and very tired after 16 hours of hard labor. The doctor decided that I needed to start on pictocin and I was so tired, my husband convinced me to get an epidural at 7:30 am. I opted to get the drugs manually pushed by the anasteiologist because I wanted only a low enough dose to keep me comfortable and sleep for a little bit. The doctor was convinced that with the pictocin and the epi relaxing me, that I would make progress fast.

I dialated to 7cm at 11am, and they broke my water. By 2:00pm, I made no more progress and the baby`s head was `molding` meaning he was stuck and also he was posterior (turned the wrong way), he had no interest in coming out. The Dr. stated that he was giving me one more hour to make progress, but after that we had to go with a c-section because the baby was stuck too long.

After having a slight meltdown, I let the epidural run out and worked with the nurse to try laying and moving in differant postions to get baby to move into postion. The contractions never let up at this point. They had the pictocin high. I was tolerating the pain pretty well, but was just so tired. I stayed on all fours, rocking through the contractions for about 45 minutes, then moved to my left side. When the Dr. came back, I was 8-9 cm and he felt the I may have some luck, but still said it was only about 1-3% chance baby was coming out on his own.

Within the next hour, the pressure got really intense and I told the nurse that I was going to have this baby. She checked me and I was fully dialated. I started pushing at 4:00 pm. I pushed on all fours, squatting and everything else I could for the next two hours. This baby really had no interest in coming out! After two hours of pushing, my perfect boy finally came out!

He pooped in utero, so was taken right away to clear everything out and I surprisingly only had a second degree tear after all of that. My eyes were almost completely swollen shut and I could hardly see my baby when they finally gave him to me. It was a hard labor and delivery, but I still feel I got to experience my natural labor, as I labored for a total of 19 hours without pain relief, including the delivery. I`m so grateful that I listened and got the epi in between, because I feel I would never have had the strength and energy to push him out if I wouldn`t have had some pain relief and got some sleep in the middle.
