Eli-Kenneth`s birthstory

October 9th was DH and my 5 year anniversary. We went out to dinner and caught a movie, but headed home pretty early as the next day was my sister`s wedding and both my sisters were spending the night at my house (it`s a tradition thing). Well later that night, DH and I did the BD (it was our anniversary after all!) And I remember waking up in the middle of the night with some stomach cramps and as his arm was draped over my belly, I recall pushing his hand off. lol.

Well the next morning, as we were getting ready for the wedding, I started having cramping pretty regularly. They started around 9:30 am and were occuring every 7 minutes or so. My older sister had already left to run some errands before her big day, but my younger sister and I were going to carpool over to the house since we had to be there early. My husband was going to be following us later.

When my sister was driving us to the wedding, I called my dr. and told her what was up. She said since it was my first, and my due date was in three weeks it was probably false labor but I could come in and get checked if I wanted to. I told her the circumstances and told her I`d wait it out. But the contractions kept on coming. The ceremony was at 2:00 pm and thank God it was short. About 15 minutes into the reception, I headed to the bathroom and found that I was bleeding. Luckily I had told my husband to put the hospital bag in the car before he left home. I told him it`s time to go. It was 3:30 by the time we got to the hospital and when we got to the emergency room, they rushed me up to the maternity ward. They checked me and found that I was already at 5 - 6 cm dilated. At that point I asked if it was too late for the epidural, because I was in a lot of pain. And luckily they said that there was still time.

So after I was moved into my room - they got the epi process started. However, she had to do it twice, because the first time she hit a blood vessel. After it was in, things were much better. But I don`t think they gave me a very high dose, because I could still feel some cramping. I`m not sure what time it was then, but the dr. came and checked me again and said I was at 9 cm. And then she broke my water. I was surprised that it hadn`t broken on it`s own by then, but ugggh that felt SO weird.

And I felt so bad, because my sisters both got there about that time. It was her wedding and she left to come see me in the hospital! Pretty soon I started to feel the urge to push. It was just Paul and the nurse in the room at that time. And the nurse told me if I felt like I had to push to go right ahead. Well my poor husband got more than he bargained for. I had told him originally that he would be staying up by my head. But he ended up holding one of my legs. Evidently the nurse thought it would take me a lot longer to give birth considering it was my first. I pushed one time for three sets - and then they put me on oxygen. I pushed a second time again for three sets and the nurse had me feel his little head. I was like ohhh, I`m squishing his head! lol.

I`m not sure why she didn`t call the dr. at that point, but she didn`t. I pushed a third time for three sets, and Eli Kenneth was out with just my husband and nurse in the room. The nurse started pushing buttons like crazy to get my dr. in there. But everything was fine. I tore a little bit and had a haematoma (sp?). But I think when the dr. put the catheter in to stitch me up it was worse than giving birth.

I`ve always thought women were crazy when they say you forget the pain - but minutes later I really did. All I could think of was how perfect my son was.
