Ryan's Birth Story
Our little bundle of joy was born on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, by Cesarean, at 12:58 am. He was 12 days late, and refused to come out on his own. He refused to budge even after 2 separate attempts to induce labour. So we went to a cesarean. Previously, on Nov. 23rd we had tried an induction that failed. We went back to the hospital on Sunday Nov 26th to try and induce the labour, and stayed for 3 hours, then went back on Monday morning at 8:00 am to start another induction. This time I dilated 2 cm, so they broke my water at 2:00 pm and I dilated another 2 cm, and progress stopped. I was scheduled in for a cesarean at 9:30 pm, but ended up being bumped by other more urgent cases. I went into the OR just after midnight, and Ryan was finally born.We had to pull him kicking and screaming into the world, but now the little bugger's here. When he finally made his appearance, he weighed in at 9 lbs, 11 ounces. We stayed in the hospital 4 more days until Friday Dec 1st and finally we were able to go home.

William-Robert`s birth story
On the morning of my Due Date Bill and I went to IKEA followed by a trip to the dentist. Starting at 4 pm on the drive home I started getting regular contractions every 5 minutes. After I got home I laid down, and they went away after about 2 hours. They came back at around 8 pm when putting the kids to bed and doing bath time. They were a bit stronger and started getting to every 3-5 minutes fairly quickly. So we packed our bags, called the babysitter and went to the hospital around 10:30 pm. We went to L& D and had to wait until our midwife arrived. We got assessed by my midwife at around midnight, I was told I was only 3 cm dilated and I wasn`t in active labour. My midwife sent me home around 1 am and gave me a shot of gravol to help me relax and maybe sleep.
When I got home I made myself a warm bath, got in and was able to relax easing the contractions a bit. After about 15 minutes I felt a big pop and a gush of warm liquid. My water had broken in the bath! So, I called Bill and helped me out of the bath. I did an amnio test to be sure that it was my water that broke, and it was positive. Called the midwife and went back to the hospital and was assessed again around 3 am and was found to be 4-5 cm dilated.
The contractions were increasing in intensity and pain. I was losing my focus and ability to answer questions. I was approaching the point where I didn`t think I could handle the pain anymore. Liam started having heart decelerations during my contractions, so I had a fetal HB monitor placed on his scalp. That was incredibly painful, and I actually cried during the procedure. His heart rate was fine though, and it was just a problem with the external monitors not accurately picking it up.
I asked for another assessment, and when I found out I was only at 5 cm, I asked for an epidural. I couldn`t see going through that kind of pain for hours. It felt like forever until the anesthesiologist got there, and I found out later it was about an hour. THE LONGEST hour of my life. My contractions were so painful and intense I was in my own world and had no clue about what was going on around me. At times it felt like I was having one big contraction that never stopped. It was very hard to get the epidural inserted, as every time they started I would get another contraction. So they just started doing it through the contractions while I was trying to stay as still as possible. Then my body started pushing. My body, not me. I was freaking out over the loss of control. I wasn`t consciously trying to push my baby out, my muscles just started doing it for me. Amniotic fluid was gushing out and all my muscles were straining. It was like my body took control. I started crying, telling my midwife I couldn`t control it and asking her what was happening.
Finally the epidural was in and started to work. They did another assessment only to find out I had dilated to 10 cm and into the pushing phase while I was waiting for the epidural. I felt somewhat relieved that there was a reason I had been in such agony, that it WAS NOT a normal progression of labour.
They turned the epidural on just enough to take the edge off during the pushing phase. I believe I pushed for almost an hour, the OB suggested we use a vacuum to help him out as it looked like I was having trouble getting him through my pelvic area. So we used the vacuum for one push and it was enough to get through the pelvis and allow me to push him the rest of the way out. He was born at 5:33 am and was placed on my belly pretty much right away. I was able to hold him and to do some skin to skin contact for the first little while. He was a little blue at first but pinked up nicely once he was on my chest for a bit. I was able to breastfeed within an hour of birth, and delayed all the checks for measurements and tests until we were done. He weighed 9 lb 0.6 oz, and was 54 cm (21.25 inches) long with a 37 cm (14.57 inches) head circumference.
His length was in the 95th percentile and his weight and head circumference were between the 75th and the 90th percentile. He is a very happy baby and seems laid back and quiet so far.
