Birth Story
We went to the hospital and checked in at 6:30 am to be induced on Nov. 19th. I was already dilated to 3 cm and the Dr. said she'd be coming in in the morning to break my waters. My nurse had had a hard time starting my IV so it took four pokes to finally get it in. We finally got the pitocine (spelling?) going at about 7:30. I'm not all that great with pain so when the contractions started I was in hell. They hurt. At first it was just annoying but then it was really painful, especially after my Dr. broke my water. I begged for the epidural. The nurse kept trying to get me in the tub. I wanted to wring her neck. I had this warm liquid (my waters) coming out of me feeling like I was peeing on myself and the last thing I wanted was to get in the tub. She checked me and said I was dilated to 4 cm. She said the earliest they'd start my epidural was at 4cm but she still made me wait. I complained enough and she finally gave me another drug to take the edge off. It helped but the contractions still hurt. The baby wasn't reacting well to the pitocine so they took me off of it for a couple of hours. I was having contractions on my own 4 minutes apart, and they were pretty strong. Finally I was crying to Drew and my mom. I couldn't take anymore of it. They finally convince my nurse to get the meds in there fast. I still had to wait because all of the anethieallogests were in surgery. Finally at about 2:00 I think is when I got my epidural. I was fantastic and I would recomend it to everyone! I can't remember when they hooked me pack up to the pitocine. All I know is that I was really tired. I told Drew to take a nap and I tried to but my dear mother kept talking to me and telling me when I was having contractions. I didn't care...I couldn't feel them and I just wanted to sleep. I wanted to slap my mom. lol There was a time when the nurse hit the emergency button and a flood of nurses came in. By the time they got there they stayed for a moment and left. My nurse just said his heart rate was down a little. They flipped me around a couple of times to try different positions, hoping it would help his heart rate. They also put the monitor in me to monitor him more closely. To be honest I don't remember everything that happened. All I know is that I had about 6 things taped to my thigh, a needle in my hand and an epi in my back. My legs were like dead logs. I couldn't move them or feel a thing. I was later very thankful for that. At about 2:55pm my Dr. was called in. She told the staff to tell her office to cancel her apts. for the next hour. She said it was time to push. My mom had stepped out to get some coffee. Then all hell broke loose. In a matter of seconds there was about 10 nurses in my room and my Dr. ran out across the hall. My mom works at the hospital and I have a lot of family in the medical field. I know when the Dr. ran out she was going across to the OR. I knew when there was that many nurses it meant something was wrong with the baby. Yet somehow I was really calm. I felt like I didn't have a care in the world. My mom walked into the havoc and almost dropped her coffee. She asked what was up and they said the baby has to come out. The Dr. got me ready and told me a quick how to. I started pushing at 3:02 and with 6 pushes and the help of a vacuum Ethan was out at 3:12. The whole time I was pushing with all my might in a way I never knew I could. I couldn't feel it really so I just imagined and hoped I was actually pushing. Drew was a wreck. I didn't open my eyes but I heard him shake and what sounded like crying in his voice. Everyone in the room was telling me to push, but all I heard was him saying "push baby push!" over and over again. When it was all over I saw my little man and it was the most amazing thing ever. Later my Dr. told me that I did amazing. I wasn't dilated fully, I think only about to 7cm. I had ripped, but she said it was a really small one, especially for not being dilated and for pushing when there wasn't a contraction. The reason, by the way, for the rush was because Ethan's cord was only about 1 1/2 ft long. So when we broke the waters the pressure on his cord was cutting of his supply. Also my placenta ended up being very small. But the most important thing is Ethan is here and he's fine. He does have Jaundice, so much so that we had to have a light delivered to our house for the last week or so. Hopefully he'll be off of it soon. He's looking much better.
