Ethan`s birthstory
Got to the hospital Monday morning at 6am. for my induction. By 7am. they had me hooked up to the monitors and started my i.v. of fluids.
I was so nervous that he was just gonna be huge. By 8 they started the pitocin drip and within half an hour i started to have little contractions. The nurse informed me that the pitocin drip would be increased every 15 mins to make my contractions harder. My Dr. came in and broke my water around 845am.
Family started showing up at the hospital just as i started to really feel the pain. I don`t know how everyone else feels about that but it seemed to make me hurt worse knowing people were standing there staring at me so i had them to go to the waiting room except for my husband who was an excellent birth partner by the way and was the only one who could comfort me.
By noon the contractions were so bad i thought i might die. The nurse came in to check me and i was dilated to 6 and she gave me something called Stadol for the pain which took the edge off for maybe 15 mins while waiting for the epidural. It took 48 mins for them to bring me the epidural after we requested it. I was not happy nor was anyone around me.
Finally the epidural was put in and i must say that although i was in so so much pain the epidural still hurt horribly, I could feel it hitting nerves in my hips and it was just very uncomfortable having to sit like that through contractions.
It was explained to me that they give you a spinal and an epidural because the spinal gives you immediate relief while the epidural takes about 10 mins to start working so i did get immediate relief and felt like a new woman. I was telling the guy that gave the epidural to me that i loved him and he was wonderful...lol
Well that was short lived as 15 mins later i was back in the same pain if not worse than before i got the epidural.
Apparently my relief was only from the spinal that only lasts 10-15 mins. So i was thinking i might actually die. Im serious, no joking. I was in that much pain for some reason so they called the nurse anethitist back and he says `well thats why it isnt working` and holds up the little tube thats hanging over my shoulder from my back and i looked over at it and it was full of blood. I really thought i would pass out.
So he had to do it over and when he did he said it went into the wrong place and had accidentally gone into a blood vessel which was why blood had backed up in it.
Finally just as i started to feel a tad bit of relief the nurse checked me again and said i was at a 7 and 100% at this time and it was probably 430pm by this time.
Well my pain must have been pretty bad because i was still hurting pretty bad even with the epidural that seemed to still be working for the most part but now everytime i would have a strong contraction my sons heart rate would drop and a couple times went down to 80.
So my Dr. told the nurse to turn off my pitocin drip to see what would happen. Well my contractions almost completely stopped and i was stuck dilated at 7. So they turned it back on just a little bit and the Dr. comes in and says `well his heart rate keeps dropping with your contractions so we need to go now to do a c-section` I was terrified as i had never had one before and im really obsessive with my skin and the thought of being cut open was really making me ill.
So they took me to the operating room and my torso was quite numb but i could still feel people touching me.
I was so nauseous and began to worry about how i was gonna be able to throw up if i was on my back being cut open.
Finally at 544pm our little Ethan Conner was born weighing nowhere close to what we predicted.......he was 7 lbs 9 oz and the most precious and perfect thing i have ever seen. He came out crying and his apgar score was a 9. They held him up to me and they said i said `he`s perfect` and i just passed out. I lost over a liter of blood and they had a hard time getting my bkeeding to stop, i guess that explained why i became so nauseous.
I am now at home with my precious new one and he is doing great. I am still so sore i can hardly move, I wish everyone else luck with their labors and hope it isn`t as rough as mine was.
