Evinrude-Scott-Green`s birthstory
I woke up to go to the bathroom at 2:28am. Though I hadn`t turned on the bathroom light, I could tell that I was bleeding when I wiped. I reached up to turn the light on and when I confirmed I was bleeding, I called for my husband. No sooner had the words left my mouth did I feel what felt like a really big kick down low. A second later bloody water went streaming down my legs. I sat back on the toilet and let some of it drain and then called my doctor who told me to get to the hospital `pretty quickly.` Soon after, I started having contractions. Somewhere between 4 and 5 cm, I got an epidural. Since my group B strep test had not come back yet, they went ahead and gave me 2 rounds of iv antibiotics just to be safe. Looking back, I had an awful backache the week before and I had also had very, very mild menstrual-like cramps for the couple of days before I went into labor. But, heck, I didn`t know what was going on!
I was scared up until it was time to push, as many people well know. In fact, when my doctor told me that I was dialated to 8 cm and would be pushing soon, I started to cry. But, 15 minutes later I felt the urge to push. The medical staff wasn`t quite ready for me to be ready so soon so I had to wait 3 contractions to actually get to push. That, was the most difficult part of Evin`s whole birth--not being able to push when I needed to push! Anyway, I pushed for 7 rounds of contractions (30 minutes) and gave birth to the most perfect little boy ever! The cord broke off the placenta after he came out and we couldn`t get my placenta out at first. My doctor had to reach in to get it. That was a bit uncomfortable, I cannot lie. But, the epidural was still working so it was not horrific.
I had a fantastic doctor and my husband was absolutely, unquestionably wonderful to me. He helped me stay focused and made sure to be my voice when I couldn`t think straight. He didn`t get to see his first son born so he was amazed at getting to see this one. He even cut the cord though he said he didn`t want to during my entire pregnancy! My husband was a complete trooper for the whole thing. Even after the birth he helped me go to the bathroom, washed me `down there,` and put maxi pads in my underwear! I would never EVER have imagined letting him do or see such things. But, he never even blinked an eye!
Though Evin was a month early, he didn`t need any special support and never had to leave our side. He was in my arms and nursing within minutes of being born. He is perfect and beautiful in every way. He isn`t very fussy (knock on wood) and seems to be eating well. We`re trying to get through a little bit of juandice but he`s making progress every day. We can`t decide who he looks like--I think he just looks like himself! But, he does have my dimples (he`s smiley already). AND, he has the most kissable cheeks ever!
I must admit that I was terrified to give birth. Having done it, I`d do it again several more times if my husband would let me. It`s not as bad as I had made it in my mind. In fact, I was walking within an hour and didn`t need any pain medication other than ibuprofen when it was all over. Nothing was as I`d imagined it! So ladies, try not to feel scared. I`m a wus, and I came through like a champ!
