Violet-Joy`s birthstory

On Friday, May 23rd during the evening, after a full day of eating spicy foods and pineapples, drinking raspberry leaf tea, going for 2 long walks with the dog, my water broke when my husband decided it would be funny to lay on top of me. I actually felt a pop and then a gush! We called the hospital and they told us to come in and get checked out but the odds were that they would send us back home and have us return in 12 hours (that`s what they said).

When we got to the hospital, I started having contractions and I was 3 cm dialated. I really wanted to try a natural birth without pain relief. Unfortunately, after 6 hours of painful contractions that were 1 minute apart, I was still only 3cm. I couldn`t take it anymore (nor could my husband! haha) and decided to go for the epidural.

For the next 2 hours, the epidural worked like a charm. The pain had all but diminished and I could relax a little. My nurse told me that they would probably give me some pitocin to speed things up and I asked that we not do that. Even though I know that it`s sometimes necessary and that I had already had one type of medical intervention, I really wanted to try and maintain some sort of control and trust that my body knew what it was doing. The nurse then checked me and I had progressed to 5cm! Shortly after, I was 9cm! It was going so fast!

Even at 9cm, the doctor came in and said that the baby was high up and not likely to come down for another couple of hours. She also found that the baby was face up...she attempted to turn the baby. Holy crap, I have never felt such pain! Needless to say, at 5cm the epidural had started to run its course (not sure why) so at 9cm, I was feeling EVERYTHING! Even though the doctor said that it would be a couple of hours, it was only a half hour before my nurse checked me and said that we should start pushing.

For the next couple of hours it was just me, my amazing husband and the nurse pushing. Because the epidural had faded and I was refusing to top it up (at that point, I felt that the pain was actually helping me know what to do), I was very aware of when to push and how hard to push. The nurse kept saying that they could make things go `faster` if I had an episiotomy or if they used the vacuum. I let her know that, as long as the baby wasn`t in any danger (which she wasn`t...her heartbeat was perfect), I was not going to hurry her along and that I would take the long way.

The doctor came in at the very last second and delivered our beautiful baby girl. My husband, because of his position and how active he was in helping me deliver, witnessed the entire thing and says that it was the most surreal and awesome experience watching our daughter be born.

I managed to deliver Violet Joy face up, no episiotomy, with only one stitch. I feel very lucky that I managed to deliver with everything reletively intact...even the doctor and nurses seemed suprised but I think that because it was so painful near the end (haha) I probably wasn`t pushing as hard as I would have with the epidural going at full force.

Violet Joy had an agpar score of 8 and then 9. She`s breastfeeding great (I breastfed her maybe 10 minutes after she was born) and has gained a couple of ounces. I usually wake her up every 3 to 4 hours to feed right now. She`s sooooooooooooooo laid back but has quite a bit of awake time where she looks around and coos! She`s perfect. My husband and I are over the moon and madly in love with Violet!
