Emilyn`s birthstory
The delivery story had a scary twist but it ended very well. We went to the hospital Monday at 5:00 to be induced two weeks early due to my high blood pressure. I was a little concerned because I was only 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced, and baby was at a -2 station (not dropped). I just felt that my body wasn`t `ready`, and was worried about how that would affect the labor and delivery.
I was put on Cervadil to help dilate me, and contractions started immediately and steadily grew all Monday night. The doctor broke my waters and administered pitocin in the morning. At about 5:00 Tuesday night the doctor ordered an epidural because the pain was making my blood pressure spike. It woked, so I was feeling much better, the bp went back down, and baby was doing very well. I was slowly moving toward the the final stages, and we figured I`d be pushing by late that night or early Wednesday. I had slowly progressed to 6 cm, 90% effaced, and baby had moved to about a -1-1/2 station. Then all of a sudden baby`s heart rate dropped. We are not completely sure what happened, but they think Emilyn had moved last minute to shoulder presenting rather than head presenting and was cutting off the umbilical cord. So doctors and nurses swarmed us and in less than 10 minutes I was on the operating table and baby was out! It`s what the doctor later told us is called a `slash and dash`. It was amazing to see how fast they could all move in and get it done in minutes. To get a sense of the speed, they had to x-ray me afterwards to make sure they didn`t leave anything in me, because they aren`t able to do equipment counts during an emergency. We were very afraid for her, and it was frightening to be on the operating table that quickly. The look in dad`s eyes was heartbreaking, but he was able to be by my side and went to baby once she was born. Emilyn was slow to respond at first but she is absolutely fine now. Her first apgar was a 4, but her second was an 8 and the pediatrican assured us that she is fine. Having an emergency c-section after 27 hours of labor was frightening, but we are all (mom, dad and Emilyn) perfectly healthy and happy. In the end the only bad part was worrying about her, but she is just perfect. I would do it over again and again for her. She has her daddy`s beautiful eyes and her mother`s smile. She is thriving now and we are just so in love with her!
