Alyssa-Grace`s birthstory

I had a complicated pregnancy including two emergency surgeries on my intestines and about a month in the hospital. Alyssa did amazingly well through it all. By the time 36 weeks rolled around I was feeling very thankful that she had stayed in so long, but I was also getting tired of being pregnant and ready to meet my baby. I did not think that she was going to be early. After all she had stayed in through, I thought that she would just keep staying in until I passed my due date and was induced. Any way on june 4th (my due date was the 30th) I had a productive day cleaning my house followed by a nice bubble bath. I did drink some red rasberry leaf tea and spend some quality time with the hubby before going to bed. ;) (not sure if those things contributed to labor or not). I was having some dreams that I was in labor, but thought nothing of it because I had been having them all week. At 1am I woke up and used the bathroom. I layed back down and just as I was drifting off to sleep felt a gush of fluid coming from below. I was disoriented, I never expected that my water would break out of nowhere, but I knew that's exactly what it was. I woke my husband up and told him to get ready, because my water just broke. My hubby got me a towel, every time I moved or tried to get up more fluid came out. As I packed my bag I called my mom, mother in law, best friend, and sister to tell them. My hubby and I got in the car and headed off to the hospital. It was dark (about 1:30 am) and raining very hard. I still couldn't believe what was happening and I was very nervous about the pain that I thought would start soon. The car ride took about 45 mins. I was having some irregular contractions but they really weren't painful. We checked in with labor and delivery and I was hooked up to the monitors. My doctor came in to check me and verify that my water had broken. As she did the pelvic exam more fluid came out she announced officially that my water had broken. I was admitted and given a delivery room. My husband, mom, dad, and sister were with me. The plan was to give me a dose of meds to soften my cervix, then get a 2nd dose 4 hours later, than start pitocin 4 hours after the 2nd dose. It sounded like it would take a while so every one but my hubby and I left to get some sleep. By this time it was about 3 in the morning. I was given the dose of meds to soften the cervix. I'm not sure what it's called but it's a pill that slowly disolves in your mouth by your cheek. The medicine kicked my body right into labor. (I only had the first dose, I was never given pitocin) I asked about an epidural and was basically told that the anesthesiologist was the only one on that night, and if I wanted it I had better get it soon. I wasn't in much pain so I decided to wait. Pretty soon I was getting uncomfortable and moaning a bit during the contractions. My nurse told me that the anesthesiologist was about to go to surgery so this would be my last chance for pain relief. Although i still wasn't in terrible pain, I decided to get it while I had the chance. Thank god I did! It worked quickly and took away all the pain. I had a little trouble with it at first, my blood pressure dropped and I started to black out. They gave me a shot of ephedrin and some oxygen, then I was fine. Around 4 my doc checked me and said I was dilated to a 2, 70% effaced. I asked again at 6 to be checked, but they told me they wouldn't check again until 9am. I could tell by the monitor that I was having some strong contractions but luckily all I felt was pressure, no pain. My parents came back and them and my husband naped while I watched the monitor. Close to 8 am I started to feel some extreme pressure with a little pain. I had a feeling that it might be time, but I didn't think that could be possible so soon. I called in the nurse, she still didn't seem to want to check me but did any way. She said I was completely dilated, effaced, and ready to push. She called in my doctor who double checked and said I was ready to go. Since I was only 36 weeks I had to wait for a team of pediatrians to set up in the room before I could start pushing. Alyssa was already crowning when I started pushing. It took about 3 or 4 rounds of pushing and at 8:24 am she was out. (In between pushes my best friend called on my cell phone. I answered it and told her I would call her back because I was having a baby. That made my family and all the docs laugh.) My hubby cut the cord then the pediatricians took her to the other side of the room to check her. It was hard waiting for them, I wanted to hold her. I kept asking if she was okay and they said yes, told me her weight 5 lbs 14 oz, length 18.5 inches and said she got a 9 on the apgar scale. As I waited for her my doctor massaged my stomach to get the placenta out. It finally slipped out about 10 mins after the baby. I had torn, so the doctor stitched me. Finally they brought me my baby girl Alyssa. I cannot put into words what went through my heart the first time I saw her. She looked at me and melted my heart. She looked so smart. They cleaned me up and sent me to a recovery room. I am thankful that after such a hard pregnancy I had such a fast and easy labor and delivery. We stayed in the hospital a couple of days where we bounded with our little girl and friends and family. We are home now and things are going well. I am thankful to god for giving me such a wonderful little girl. I am enjoying life as a mom.
