Tyler`s birthstory
I was induced early because I was just SO tired of being pregnant and my doctor offered me the choice. It turned out great and I`m so happy I went for it!
I checked into the hospital at 5:30am and was taken straight to my room. (The funny thing was that my SIL had her baby the night before, and she was in that same room! However, she had an unexpected c-section because she wasn`t dilating past 4cm. Therefore her son was born in the OR at about 8pm. ALSO, I was in the exact same room when I had my daughter 3 years ago!!! Strange coincidences.)
Anyhow, the nurse started me on Pitocin through my IV just before 6am. I began feeling my first contractions at about 6:15, but they were very mild. (I went into labor spontaneously at the same time with my daughter!) I was at 1-2 cm and 75 % effaced. My doctor came in around 7:45 and tried to break my water. However, my baby was a little too high and he couldn`t do it then. It was painful! He also stripped my membranes then. My contractions grew progressively stronger throughout the morning, but they were tolerable. The nurse upped my Pitocin every 30 min., so I had to begin breathing and really concentrating through them. It helped me to use the bathroom a lot. My back was really getting sore laying in bed, so I found it helpful to stand up and sway sometimes. My doctor was able to break my water at about 10:00, which really started my most painful contractions.
I didn`t want any medicine to relax because it made things worse last time. So I hung in there with nothing for quite a while. The nurse said at 11:00 that the anesthesiologist was busy from 11:30-1:00 with a c-section, so if I wanted my epidural soon, I needed to take it then. I felt like it was a little early for it, so I decided to wait until 1:00. I didn`t want to be tied down to bed just yet. During that time, my contractions were rough! However, the were regular contractions, so I had the short breaks in between them. My husband was in the room all day, but sleeping most of the time. It didn`t really bother me usually because I didn`t like to be talked to when I was in such pain. My MIL was also in the room sometimes, and a family friend who invited herself. Oh well...they always gave me privacy when needed.
Finally, at 1:00 I got the epidural. So I made it about 7 hours with no pain relief. I`m proud of myself for that! The epidural was tough this time. It was easy in my first labor, but this time there was a problem. The anestheoligist said the space in between my discs was very small and he had trouble getting the catheter through them. It was a slow process while he tried, but he thankfully always paused while I was having a contraction. Then he finished up and tried to get the medicine in through the tube, but it wouldn`t go because my discs where pinching it shut. So, he had to take it all out and start over again, putting it one space higher. It seemed to take forever and was pretty painful. I got a little of the epidural medicine with the first one he did. Then once the second one was in and working well, it was a bit too strong. I was WAY too numb from the bottom of my rib cage to my toes. It made me feel like I couldn`t breathe well and I was getting a little panicky. It also made my blood pressure get REAL low and my weak breathing was causing some big drops in the baby`s heart rate. Therefore, the nurse put an oxygen mask on me for about 30 minutes and then things improved. I really didn`t like it and was pretty scared!
The good thing was that I was continuing to dilate and efface every time the checked me - and the baby was getting lower each time too. So it was encouraging to know I was progressing. I think I was only at 4-5 cm at 1:00, but it really began to take off after the epidural. They also stopped my Pitocin for a while. At 4:00, my doctor checked me and said I was 10 cm and to start pushing with the nurse to get started! We started, but the nurse felt a little bit of cervix left and had me wait about 45 minutes. Then we started again at 4:45. Pushing was so exhausting! It wasn`t painful because of the epidural, but very very tiring! My doctor kept coming in and out to check my progress. He came in cheering like a cheerleader while I was in the middle of a big push once, and I busted out laughing. This caused my baby to really drop low, so he and the nurses got everything ready for delivery. Then I only had to push through about 5 more contractions. I was starting to tear, so he did a small episiotomy and the baby flew out! We couldn`t believe how quick he slid out and joined this world! It was amazing. He was perfect! He doctor sat him on top of my belly and I got to touch him right a way! It took no time at all for me to deliver the placenta and the doctor to stitch me up. Soon I was holding my baby boy swaddled in a blanket, and SO relieved to be finished!
It was a great labor and delivery and I have no regrets with the induction. It was neat being in the hospital with my SIL. Her son is just about 21 hours older than mine. Both boys are doing great! My son`s name is Tyler Mathias. He has a little bit of jaundice, but nothing to worry about. Today he is 4 days old and doing wonderfully. We`re not sleeping well at night, but that`s to be expected. My recovery has been taking a while. My breasts are SO engorged right now because I`m bottle-feeding. I sure hope they`re a lot better tomorrow! My hormones have me going through hot and cold flashes all day long. My episiotomy is quite sore too, of course. My hubby has been SO much help lately! We`re just trying to get adjusted with our 3 year old daughter and our newborn son.
