Anthony's birth story
I was due April 12th. I went into pre term labor the first time February 23rd ( I was almost 33 weeks). I lost part of my plug. After contractions were 5 minutes apart for an hour, I went to labor and delivery (I called them right after I lost my plug, they told me to drink lots of water and time contrations...if they didn't go away, to call them back). They found I was contracting every 3-4 minutes and they were lasting for 1 minute. They gave me a shot of Tributelene. That worked for 20 minutes, then they gave me Morphine and an IV of fluid. That stopped the labor. That Sunday it started again, my doctor told me to take some ibuprofin and go back to bed. The next Monday, I started again, my doctor put me of Nifedipene every 4 hours and bed rest and I was to go for non stress tests every Monday and Friday until I delievered. I did fine until I was 35 weeks, then I started again and the pills did nothing. I went to labor and delivery, they checked me and I was dialated to 2 cm. My doctor decided to take me off the Nifedipene and let my body do what it was going to do anyhow. My labor stopped, I would have a couple contractions throughout the day, but nothing serious. By week 37, I could barely walk due to him being so low. My doctor scheduled me to be induced Sunday the 6th of April. I went for my NST on Monday, April fool's. I was havivng a lot of contractions while waiting for the nurse to come and get me, but I thought nothing of it as I was always having contractions. She finally came and got me, set me up on the monitors, after a few minutes she came in and was watching the monitors for a while, she told me it looked like I might be in labor. I told her about the on going labor...that I was coming in on Sunday for induction. She told me I should make sure everything was ready so I was ready to come back tonight as she expected to see me sometime that night. I laughed. We left, went home and I was tired so I decided to nap. I woke up starving, so I ate and went back to bed. I woke up again around midnight, in pain! I thought, oh, they will stop...I'll just go back to sleep. I wasn't able to as I was in so much pain so I went downstairs to sit in my rocking chair to see if the rythm of the rocking helped at all. ( It really had in the past). I guess I was grunting, my mom heard me and came out to see what was going on. She took one look at me and said "this is different, isn't it?" I started to bawl. I was scared that I would have to go to the hospital and be sent back pregnant, again. (By this time, I had been to L & D 10 times). She went to get my boyfriend, Steve. He came down and both of them tried to convince me we should go to the hospital. I really didn't want to, but after a few more contractions, I was ready. We loaded up and off we went. When we got there, they took me right back. I had a really nice nurse. She checked me, I was 2 cm and 90% effaced. She told me she was going to call my doctor, was there anything I wanted her to tell him? I said, tell him I don't want to go home pregnant, I'm taking my baby home in a car seat. Let's get this done, TODAY. She said ok and went to call him. It was 2 am. I had to walk around for 30 minutes and see if I had any cervical change. I walked as much as I could, I thought I was going to die! She checked me again, I was a good 3 and 95 % effaced! Hoorray! She left again to call dr. When she came back she said "it's not April fool's anymore, so it's not a joke, we're admitting you to room 226" Those were the sweetest words I'd ever heard at that point. I got to my room, took a shower, got hooked up, got the IV and just labored. It was rough, but I did really well I think. My doc came in at 8:30, I was dialated to 5 almost 6 and he broke my water. I had a high level of fluid, so it gushed like old faithful. Poor guy. I labored hard until 11:30, when it became unbareable. I asked for the epidural. I had planned for a natural birth, but after all we had been through, I just wanted to rest and I could barely keep it together. It was a really good decision to get the epidural. I was able to rest. The nurse checked me right before I got the epi and I was a good 6, when I got my catheder right after, I was a good 7! I was chuggin along. I rested until 2:30, and started to push then. I pushed until he was born at 5:35 weighing 7 lbs 3 oz, 20 inches long. He needed oxygen and was covered in vernix, but he was beautiful. It took 5 minutes before he cried. I got quite a few stitches as I had an episiotomy and I tore, but it was all worth it.
