Brenden-Michael-De-Groot`s birthstory
This is really long - but I have the whole thing written out so I can look back in a few years and relive the happiest day of my life.
We checked into the hospital on Sunday April 27th at 6:49 pm - once in our room the nurse came in checked me, I was at 1 cm) and gave me my first dose of cytotec vaginally and after that I would receive it orally every 3 hours. We didn’t get much sleep that night since we were anxious and excited and had to be woken up every 3 hours. At about 1:00 am I finally felt like I was having some sort of contractions. The plan was to keep getting doses of cytotec, doctor guess 4, to get things.
At about 10:40 am the doctor came in and broke my water, they hooked me up to the IV and started me on the pitocin. At 11:30 am, I started having measurable contractions.
At 12:15 pm I told the nurse it wouldn’t be long until I wanted the epidural as I was starting to really feel the contractions. They had to then pump 1 bag of IV solution into me and call the anesthesiologist. The anesthesiologist came up and we begun the epidural. As I sat up to sit on the edge of the bed, the rest of my water ran onto the floor and I couldn’t help but laugh as the nurse Natosha and Sharon were propping me up, the were standing in it! I made a comment that Sharon would need to wash her shoes as she was standing in my water. The doctor started the epidural by numbing me, which felt like a bee sting, I hate bees!!! But got the area all numb and started inserting the big needle. Well the first attempt didn’t work – they give you a shot of saline and adrenaline – and ask you if you are light headed, tingly, buzzing in my ears – well of course I get the light headedness and he realized that it was in my vein so he had to redo it. Second try, just below where they put the first one in – didn’t work. Third time and 45 minutes later, the attempt was successful. The whole process wasn’t as bad as I thought but I’m sure it would’ve been much better if it didn’t take so long.
Epidural in and my legs were completely useless, which we would later find out would turn out to be very interesting…
Almost immediately after the epidural was in and I was propped up in bed the tummy monitor was not picking up his heart so Natosha came and tried readjusting the monitor, she could not find it – so she started moving, and fast – she decided to do an internal monitor that would be attached to his head – she stuck it in and we heard his heart. After we could hear the blips on the monitor, she asked if I was ok, and I started crying thinking I’ve got too far now for something to happen to my son.
For the rest of my labor I could not lay on my right side, as every time I would Brenden’s heart rate would go from 140’s-150’s to 80 or 90. So they would flip me over (remember I had no feeling from waist down) to my left side and things would seem ok for a while.
As the pain intensified, I had this (what I thought was) a nifty button that would give me more pain meds, after the second time of hitting it and puking, we realized that I didn’t tolerate it so well. Sharon turned into my puke-pail companion, while Ben had to flip and hold me over so I could heave-ho.
Slowly but surely I was making progress, but every time they turned up the pitocin Brenden’s heart rate would drop again so they would have to turn it down or completely off, give me oxygen and just watch him.
I was slow to make progress and they started talking about if I don’t progress we may have to talk C-Section, this was not in my plans!
Finally I was making progress and got a wonderful nurse, Allison, that said that we were just going to leave the pitocin where it was at and hope for some more progress, she checked me and I had moved to 4-5cm!!!
I puked 2 more times while using my “nifty” button, but we were now prepared. At 10 pm they had a shift change and I got my nurse from the night before – Adrienne. She checked me and I was still 4-5cms and she wanted to try to get me to turn to the right to help things along, although we both protested as we knew that his heart rate would drop. As we predicted it happened – and I was flopped over to the left again. I again was informed that if things didn’t progress a C-Section was quite possible.
I heard this again and thought no way – so without completely laying on my left, I moved my hips around to open up my pelvic bones. That’s when things really started moving!! I started to feel the contractions more and really getting uncomfortable.
At 11:30 pm Adrienne checked me and I was 7-8cm’s!!!!!!! So she called the Doctor to give a progress report and said that she would be back in an hour to check me – so we thought maybe it would be another 2 or so hours until was got to the point where we were ready to push. Sharon, who had been up at the hospital all day decided that it was time to go home and let Ben and I finish the job on our own. Not knowing when things would happen, Ben decided to go down and get some coffee – big mistake for him! He heard a lady down the hall in full fledge pushing screaming and yelling and thought “What am I in for?”
As Ben sat by my side he helped me breath through each contraction. If not for him I probably would’ve passed out, as the pressure was so intense it took my breath away. I made it to 12:15 am and told Ben to call her as I was feeling A LOT of pressure – in fact my exact words were “I feel like someone is shoving a f*ing baseball bat up my ass”. She checked me again – 9.5 cms – Holy SHIT – 2.5 cms in 45 minutes. She told me with the next contraction I could push. We were finally here; it wouldn’t be long until I saw my little guy. Excited as I was – I calmly told Ben to grab the baby book for Brenden’s footprints! As I endured the next contraction I pushed 3 times – he head dropped down to the point where he was crowning. She called the doctor and told her it was time. After being in excruciating pain for 1.5 hours now I somehow felt better. The next time I was to have a contraction I had to breath through it (waiting for the doctor) – Ben holding my hand and tell me to breathe it – we were there! The doctor was in the room and we were ready! Next contraction I got to push!! I could feel his head moving further out and his heart starting dropping so the doctor decided to use a vacuum to assist him on his way into the world. The next contraction was here and I pushed twice with the vacuum assist and at 2:04 am on April 29th, 2008 Brenden Michael De Groot was born. They placed him on my chest and I began to cry. After 9 months of being pregnant, all the nausea, cravings, uncomfortable nights, sleepless nights and labor he was finally here. I just sobbed and said “My Baby!”
Nothing could have prepared me for the most wonderful experience of my life – he is now here, he may be only 4 days old today, but he is the love of my life and I would do anything in this world for him. I love him so much and wouldn’t trade this experience for any other.
