Josslynn-Sophia-Harper-Mahley`s birthstory

I was scheduled for an elective induction on October 7. I had PUPPS and my ob/gyn said we could induce labor once I was 37 weeks, so that`s what we decided to do. My boyfriend and I arrived at the hospital at 7AM and were admitted to Labor & Delivery. I changed into a hospital gown and a nurse examined me to see if I was dialated. I was 1cm. dialated, 50% effaced, and the baby was at -2 station. At 8AM, they inserted cytotec into my cervix, and I have to admit, that part was terrible!! The nurse had a hard time getting the cytotec pill into the correct position and it was very, very uncomfortable. Once that ordeal was over with, I got stuck with an IV, but after what just happened, I couldn`t have cared less. They put 2 monitors around me to monitor my contractions and the baby`s heartbeat, and I had to wear a blood pressure cuff that would take my b.p. at regular intervals. The nurse said my ob/gyn would be in at noon to check me and probably break my water, so we just waited for her. Between 8AM and noon, I felt no pain at all even though I was having regular contractions. We just watched tv and joked and laughed, and were having ourselves a good, albeit very nervous, time. At 12PM, my ob/gyn arrived, checked my cervix, and said she was going to break my water. I forget how dialated I was at that time, maybe 3cm. When she broke my water, I felt no pain at all, but I did feel the amnio hook scrape against my amniotic sac. It felt like she was draggin the hook against a balloon, and then I felt a huge gush of fluid come out. It kept leaking out when I laughed or coughed and I couldn`t believe how much of that stuff I had inside me! She said my contractions would probably get stronger and more intense since that cushion was gone, but I didn`t feel a thing until about 4PM. Although my contractions were regular and fairly strong, they started a pitocin drip to up the ante. Well it worked. I started to get a little uncomfortable, nothing unmanageable, but the nurse said she could give me up to 3 shots of nubain to help ease the pain. She said the nubain would basically take the edge off for about an hour and make me feel loopy and drunk. Boy, was she right!! I got my first shot around 4PM and almost immediately, I felt like I had downed a 6 pack of beer. I remember telling my boyfriend and mom I was ready to party! When the first shot started to wear off around 5PM, I got another one, but it wasn`t as effective the second time. My contractions were coming every few minutes and they really started to hurt. Every time I would feel one coming, I`d cover my face with a pillow and just moan through it. I requested an epidural and the anesthesiologist came in and talked to me about the risks and what I should and shouldn`t feel during the procedure, and how effective the epidural would be by the time I delivered. He said since I was only 4cm. dialated I might feel a lot of pressure when the baby was being born, but that I shouldn`t feel any pain. I was seriously trying to pay attention to this man, my miracle worker, but I just kept thinking, `Can we get this over with already!?!` Finally, him and a nurse got me set up and, in a matter of 10-15 minutes, my epidural was in. Thank heavens!! I had a few contractions while he was inserting the epidural but the nurse helped me through them and before I knew it, all my pain was gone. This was around 6PM. At 9:30 the nurse checked me again and said I was 9cm dialated, almost 10. I was so excited because I knew my little girl would be born soon. I asked if they`d let me labor down with her so hopefully I wouldn`t have to push that long, and they agreed. At 10:45, a couple nurses and my midwife came in and I knew this was it. They had me do a couple practice pushes to see how I did and said I was ready to push this baby out. I felt absolutely no pain and I didn`t even feel pressure until her head was coming out and a contraction started. They had me push 3 times with each contraction and would count to 10 with each push. I pushed and pushed, knowing the better I pushed, the faster my little angel would get here. They were all so encouraging and telling me how well I was doing, but since I had the epidural, I couldn`t feel a thing. I didn`t realize how well I was doing until my midwife asked if I wanted to feel her head. I looked down and my little girl`s head was all the way out and she was looking sideways. A couple more small and gentle pushes, and her whole body came out. My midwife let me grab her under her arms and pull her onto me, and I just started bawling. I couldn`t help myself. She was so beautiful, with a head full of dark hair just like her daddy when he was born. Josslynn Sophia Harper Mahley was born at 11:29PM, weighed in at a whopping 6lbs. 2oz., and was 20.5 inches long. I only pushed for half an hour or so and I couldn`t believe it was all over. After we held her for a few minutes, the nurses took her to clean her off, and my midwife said it was time to deliver the placenta. I did that with one or two pushes and then it was time to sew me up. I had 3 small tears, which she stitched up in no time, and then we got to hold Josslynn again. I think we were all surprised at how quick everything went, and how relatively easy I had it during labor & delivery. I wouldn`t change a thing and I`m so happy to be a mommy now!
