My waters broke at 10 to midnight on 16 nov. My first 2 contractions were 11 mins apart, then the next 5 were 4 mins apart & then they went to 3 mins!! So we went to hospital & the midwife checked me over & said i was only 2cm & that it wasn't true `active` labour because i wasnt progressing, however the pains felt like they were extremely regular.....she got another midwife to check me & she said the same. They suggested i go home & take a couple of pain killers & sleep it off & they also said i definitely wouldnt have the baby that day. I really didnt want to go home so they said i could stay but my family wouldnt be allowed to.....so my partner & mum had to go home. They gave me valium so that i would sleep & put me on the prenatal assessment ward. I didnt sleep, I just lay there in agony (with no pain relief because i was sick straight after they gave me 2 pain killers) & I really felt that things were progressing, although at the end of the day I felt that they knew what they were talking about, it was my first time doing this afterall.......a while later I started feeling my body pushing but I let this happen 3 times before i pressed my alarm to get a midwife to come & help me. This midwife said I was leaking meconium & that the baby was in distress so she gave me a check & told me that I was now 8cm dilated!!! This was at 5.30am & my family had been sent home at 4.20am!!! Imagine if I had`ve gone with them........anyway it turns out my baby was also an undiagnosed breech & they were going to have to rush me in immediately for an emergency section!! I kept asking about my partner because I really didnt want him to miss the birth. They called him & he made his way in, although they didnt tell him what was happening, only that I was on my way to the labour suite. They gave me an spinal, & I honestly could have kissed the doctor who gave me it lol!! It was instant relief! The baby was born at 6.02am & I breastfed her within 5 mins of the birth & she fed for a whole 40 mins!! Daddy didnt arrive till 6.05am so he missed 3 mins which is not too bad i suppose......although i wasnt very happy with the whole situation. I also lost 1litre of blood (apparently this is loads) My haeomoglobin level went to 7.5 (its meant to be around 14!) My partner got such a fright, he really thought something bad was gonna happen to mummy.......but I am totally fine. Anyway baby is here safe & sound & we got home on 19th Nov!! Were loving life as a new family!

On the morning of 31st Aug I started having irregular pains at about 4am. When the pains hadnt disappeared after 3 hours i decided to give the midwife a call. So they decided it was best to go in & get checked over. When I went in they told me I was only 2cm dilated however because my planned section was booked for the following day they felt it was best that I stay in, so i was admitted to the ward. My pains seemed to be getting stronger & after about 4 hours they checked me again but I was still only 2cm dilated. Then after another few hours they decided to transfer me to another ward because my pains, they felt, werent as bad as some of the other ladies who were in & they needed the beds. It ended yiup meaning I got a private room though so I wasnt complaining!!! I got settled into bed, & was jst lying reading my book, still having irregular contractions, & then I heard a pop! So I stood up & just as I expected the water started coming out! Once that happened the pains intensified dramatically. I pressed the alarm for the midwife & explained my waters had gone. She said they would take me in there & then for the section. So when I got there the surgeon came in & explained that she had only just taken in another lady for a section & that she would be as quick as she could, roughly an hour. I had been telling the midwives all day that I have a tendency to labour quickly, but they hadnt really listened, infact I dont think they believed me! When the midwife checked me at that point I was still only 2cms! This was just after midnight, so was now the 1st Sept. The pains got stronger & stronger, so the midwife gave me some gas & air, it got so bad I ended up begging them to hurry & kept asking how long is it going to be lol! So anyway after about 40 mins of pains & me starting to bear down the midwife checked me again & they discovered I was now 8cms! They were very shocked at the speed of my dilation lol! So they got me into the theatre & they were trying, unsuccessfully, to insert the spinal. With each contraction now my body was pushing & the midwife said Gemma are you pushing? This went on for some time & they actually stopped trying to administer the spinal & decided to check where the head was & low & behold he was right there & i was at 10cms! So they all just started shouting at me push push push so i pushed with all my might with each contraction, & oh the pain was unbearable. I hadnt even taken a single pain killer the whole time id been at hospital, only had the gas & air! So I pushed for about 10 mins, & they used the suction cap for a min & out he popped!!!! I had a slight tear & needed 2 stitches. My lil guy weighed 6lbs exactly & was born at 1.30am on 1st Sept, so exactly 2 hours after my waters broke!! My husband was so proud of me for ending up giving birth naturally, infact everyone in the room was, it was amazing! So rather than me being in the hospital for up to a week I got out later that day, at 5.30pm!!! Im a little sore where I had my stitches but nothing compared to the pain I know I would have had if id had a section. Such a dramatic, amazing turn of events & 1 I will never forget :)
