I went to Winnie Palmer Hospital on Thursday to do my pre-op stuff and bloodwork and then went home. Next morning (Friday the 16th) we left the house around 6am in order to be at the hospital by 8am- surgery was scheduled for 10am. I get there with Bobby, my mom, and my sister Crystal and wait around for awhile in the surgery suite before they brought me back to get prepped. I started to get emotional in the car on the way over (I was missing my belly already!) but when I actually got there and it really hit me that today was the day! I got nervous and was tearing up the whole time in the waiting area. Bobby and my mom came back with me into the prep area and Crystal waited out in the waiting area. I go back and they give me a gown and the stuff to wipe on my belly to disinfect it so I change into the horribly large gown (lol) and put on the ugly gray socks (lol) and head back to my little room to get all hooked up. They put the moniters on me and the blood pressure cuff that was SO tight. It would check pressure every 3-5 minutes. I was having some pretty hard contractions at 15-20 minutes apart so if I hadn't gone in for my c-section that day I prob would have had him this weekend (he was 42 weeks!). Then the people came in to explain the epidural or spinal options and the like (I had already decided on a spinal), my doctor then came in to check on me, and then they wheeled me down the hall to the operating room. We go in and it's all bright and big and I really started to get anxious. I have never had surgery before so seeing something like this and NOT on tv was causing me some serious anxiety! They put my bed in place and I sit up and lean on a nurse and get the spinal put in. It didn't hurt one bit.. what got me was the guy explaining to his student what he was doing as he was doing it! I didn't like hearing "and the first little pop here is the vertebra.. etc."! Almost immediatley my legs started going tingly and got really hot. It felt like my legs were just waking up from being alseep (all pins and needles!). It wasn't a good feeling.. my dr and a couple nurses manuver my legs around (embarrasing!) and my dr inserts my cathater and then they bring my husband in to be with me at the top of the bed. They put the curtain up and put the little bands on my wrists and put a blanket over my top half. Bobby is holding my hand and looking all excited :o) my dr then pinches my hand with this horrible looking pincher thingy and then says he is going to pince me all over my belly and for me to tell him what I am feeling. He says he starts pinching and I feel nothing so they begin. They were in and out very quickly! It wasn't even five minutes and they tell Bobby to stand up and look over the curtain. I feel this extreme pressure on my chest -they actually had a guy sitting on my bed putting his full weight with his arms on the area right below my breastbone! They told me this would happen but I thought I was dying! I couldn't breathe and was so glad that only lasted like 20 seconds! They do this so it pops the baby out without the use of a vaccum. Bobby stood up and I heard a little gurgle sound and then Joel was out! He was screeching his head off! As soon as I heard that small gurgle I just started crying. Bobby cried too :o) they took Bobby and Joel over to the little bed and started to clean him off.. Joel was just a crying the whole time! He was happy in his little beanie home (my belly lol) and didn't want to come out! He was born at 11:04am! They brought Joel over to me and I got to see him for the first time! He was just so beautiful! He came out clean.. no blood or anything. He was just wet and had some vernix on his head and all over his back. The tech took pictures for me and Bobby as we were meeting Joel! My doctor then took the curtain down and I was finished. Bobby and Joel followed a nurse out to go to the nursery where they observe the c-section babies while the mother recovers and they pushed me out of the OR at 11:24am. The whole thing was right at 30 minutes! I had Bobby take pictures of Joel while I was in the recovery room and he was going back and forth from me in the recovery area to standing by Joel's basinet in the nursery. I wanted to breastfeed Joel but I was in recovery for too long (they didn't have any rooms available for hours!) and Joel was hungry so I let them feed him a bottle in the transition nursery. I finally got my room and they wheeled me up there and brought Joel in sometime later. It was almost 16 hours since I had seen him! It was SO love at first sight all over again! I was able to breastfeed him and the connection there was just amazing. My little guy is a cuddler and his favorite place to be right from the beginning is right on his momma's chest! Bobby and I are so in love with our little man and are so thankful to God that He blessed us with this little one and that we are all at home safe and sound!
