wait till it has dropped off and then you can bathe your lil one fully in a bath and then cover him in talc powder and creams and lotions - they do eventually smell like 'baby'!!!!!!!! we couldnt find our cord - we think that it had dropped off inside his nappy and then when changed we threw it away - we didnt want to save it, but i was looking everywhere for it- you dont really wanna bare foot walk over the cord do ya ?!Urgh - so if you cant find it, its prob wrapped in his nappy after a change. x x

My Isaac was a terrible sleeper too- until he started tummy sleeping. I used to put him on his tummy during the day to sleep as I could watch him. Then when he could lift his head up well he went on his tummy at night too. Sound machine, vibration, vibrating chair- Hopefully if he gets better day sleep he will get better night sleep. For the first 8 weeks until he started sleeping more at night (which was when i turned him on his tummy) he would wake up every 30 min at night. I was going crazy! I wanted to give him away and cried a lot. You can also try sleeping him in a moses basket for now. SOmetimes a big crib is too big for them right now and they don't like it.Especially if he is a baby that likes to be squished into you and cozy to sleep. Swaddling helped too for us.
pUmping- unfortunately you only pump what you store. If you are pumping after he eats- you won't get as much than if you pumped for a skipped feeding. Stored milk also decreases as your baby ages. Around 6 months I went from being able to pump out a full feeding (5oz) if i missed a feed to only getting 2 oz from each breast. Now I'm lucky if I can get 1/2 an oz. When do you go back to work? you may just have to do formula at work and bf when you are at home- before you leave for work and then when you come home.

the belly button- if its really gross still, wash it really well with soap and water 3 x a day. Then dry it. If you can, I used to blow dry it with my hair dryer on the low/cool setting just to make sure it was really dry. Isaac's was like that too and it cleared up quickly then. My midwife also suggested using alcohol swipes to dry it up more quickly- but the washing and drying it really well made it heal fast.

I hope you get some sleep soon! Its never easy is it? Good thing they are so cute. It makes it easier. Right now my Isaac has a cold/ fever and has been running a temp of nearly 39 (103) for 3 days. Last night he barely slept. I think he slept maybe 4 hours over the night. THank goodness he had some better naps today. I always think when he's sick that this is the hardest part about being a mom. At least when they are healthy, the worrying part is only minimal. I feel so bad for him right now b/c i know he feels crappy. I just want to take his cold away. :(

Try to relax...that's the most important! Find a nice quiet comfortable place to pump and do it while your breasts are FULL preferably before a feeding. It also works really well while feeding your baby on one breast and pumping on the other. Some women find that looking at a picture of their baby helps with let-down, massaging and warm compresses help as well. The more your breasts are used the more they will produce so make sure to feed your baby as often as possible (on demand of course) and you could even try pumping again after a feeding even if nothing comes out just to "trick" your breasts into making more milk. I personally found that an electric pump worked better and was less tiring but I have really large long nipples and they had a tendency to get sucked in too far and then no milk was being expressed. Fiddle around with the settings and the way your breast fits in there, it could also just be the model of breast pump you are using that is giving you trouble. Don't get discouraged if the first few times you only get 1-2 ounces...it will increase in volume the more you get used to it. I have met many mothers who also had difficulties with pumping and others who could fill bag after bag. Just work with little amounts at a time and if you have a deep-freezer to store it in they can be kept there anywhere from 6-12 months (make sure you label and use oldest first) Last but not least remember that your diet is important for good milk production and try to keep stress low and keep you body and mind well rested (not always an easy thing to do) I hope that this helps a little, if you have any other questions I'd be happy to help. Best of luck

Eva

One thing that has helped us get Brady into his crib is to put a heating pad down for a few minutes before he goes down to warm it up. We let him fall asleep hard before we lay him down and it works like a charm. Hope it helps! Oh and yeah the belly button is totally gross!

babytauri - Thursday, 15 January
Same here! Tauri will sleep...as long as she's not in her own bed! I'll put her down and she too wakes right up, but if I lay her next to me, be it on the sofa or in the bed, she'll sleep for atleast 2 hours! I really don't wanna get her use to sleeping with us, but I CRAVE the sleep myself and that's usually the only way I get some! I'm hoping it'll change soon. As for pumping, I haven't pumped in a while. I'm with her all day everyday so I feed her as often as she needs. When you go back to work, if you continue to pump as often as you feed him then all that milk you pump at work will be well over 2 oz and you can just freeze it til he needs it. When did you have him? Tauri's navel chord fell off like the 2nd week but it was still draining so the doc put something on it to help it close and now it's 100% healed but she has a slight hernia; I'm thinking of ways to push it back in! LOL!

T3POandR2D2 - Thursday, 15 January
My sons stump didn't fall off until he was 24 days old. It doesn't really matter if you put alcohol on it or not. It will fall off when it's ready. His looked like it was going to fall of when he was only 6 days old! lol Not so much!

Lillysmomma08 - Wednesday, 14 January
I dont think the alcohol will hurt him hon, it will dry it up. Just blow on it some after you do it incase it stings, my mom said it didnt bother us when she did it, (I asked her again earlier after u wrote me) Hope this helps

annan617 - Wednesday, 14 January
My baby still has her belly button stump, she is now 12 days old, we are going to see the Dr tomorrow for her 2 week check up and I will ask him about it then. It doesn't look infected or anything so hopefully it will fall out soon. Take Care.

Lillysmomma08 - Wednesday, 14 January
Hmm. Maybe its a new finding that I am not aware of. My mom told me this is what she did with her babies. You might not wanna use it then, if they are saying bad stuff about it hon. My daughter was in the NICU and hers fell off in there. She said (My mom) the doc told her to do it though. You might wanna call the hospital and ask the OB nurses or something, maybe they can tell you. But I would think with it oozing, is it oozing pus or blood? It might be infected?

dandunam - Tuesday, 13 January
Hey, don't worry about feeling overwhelmed!! The first 6 weeks go by in a daze.....it really gets so much better then: baby is easier to handle, you are more used to the baby and ESPECIALLY your body and mind have recuperated after delivery. Just take one step at a time and enjoy it as much as possible!!

Hey Ladies:
I have written an update on my son in the blogs.
Thanks again for all the prayers! =]

babytauri - Friday, 9 January
That 15-minutes-per-breast was working until about 3 nights ago. Now she's emptying one breast before I switch her to the other. By the time she's satisfied, it's about 45 minutes later. By this point, I'm sure I've started to produce more than 3 oz per breast.

babytauri - Friday, 9 January
I certainly am and Tauri is up like that at night too, but sleeps for like 4 hours during the day! And her appetite seems to be increasing so instead of feeding on one breasts for about 15 min, she's going about 45 minutes between both, and still every 2 hours at night!

babytauri - Thursday, 8 January
WOW!!! That's all I have to say when it comes to this motherhood thing! Tauri KICKS OUR ASSES at night! She definitely has her days and nights mixed up, but I've learned to sleep when she sleeps during the day so I'm not nearly as tired as I use to be! 3 weeks down, a lifetime to go! LOL! Hope all of you are enjoying your new babies and I would love to hear your stories on how you're handling motherhood!

Mcbender3 - Thursday, 8 January
