Tuesday, 5 Feb

HiIt has been a week now since I first suspected I might be pregnant and took a simple pregnancy test that changed everything! Two days and a doctors visit later, we got the positive blood test results back. Wow! We were a little in shock the first few days, but are now feeling pleased and excited. There are lots of things to worry about of course, but have decided to try to take things one step at a time. Was quite nauseas all day every day last week and pretty much existed on apples and carrot sticks. I have been very achy and a little tired, but it has not been too bad so far really. I start back at work tomorrow, so am hoping that my symptoms will continue to be as manageable as they are now. But if not, I might just have to let someone into the loop so that I have a bit of support. My main worry at the moment is choosing a midwife and getting to grips with what I can or cannot eat, and how that will effect my usual diet. My partner Justin and I have been engaged for a year now and this will just make this year even busier. There is lots to do! :-)

Tuesday, 5 Feb

Ok, so I just figured out (thanks Kiwimum) how to get the words to appear at the top, and reposted last week `s message - YAY! - so it won `t get lost with everything else. This week I contacted quite a few midwifes but only managed to get hold of 3, one of whom was moving out of the area, so that leaves 2. So have 2 appointments coming up in the next few weeks. Haven `t been to the doctor since my initial dash to see if I was actually pregnant. Not sure when I `m surposed to be doing what. No morning (or all day) sickness this week so far - slightly sore boobs is all - YAY! Am starting to think about money matters now (or lack of them) but will just take things step by step I guess. What an exciting and scary time. xx

Monday, 11 Feb

ell, it has just dawned on me that I spent most of last week eating tomatoes! Tomatoes on toast, tomatoe sandwhiches, tomato on crackers, etc, etc. And I didn `t actually realise it at the time. This week.... not so much. A bit of queasyness once again, but not too bad, gets better in the evenings. Had my first meeting with a midwife yesterday. Will meet with a different one next week. The midwife thinks that I might be due around the 5th of October, going on conception date. My sister `s birthday is on the 6th. Could be an interesting birthday for her. So anyway, that is all the news for this week. xx

Tuesday, 19 Feb

Well, we met a different midwife last night - a really nice lady who seems to be on the same wavelength as us, which is good - and now we have midwife!! YAY! I am so pleased that we are now sorted - now I have to book in for a scan for next month sometime. It is nice to be onto the next step! This week I am really into grapefruit - yum! Having very early nights. But otherwise I am pretty good, a little nausea here and there, but hey... that `s life!

Saturday, 23 Feb

Well, have now booked in for our first scan!! Very exciting. 25 March. Seems quite a long way away at the moment. And then a week after that, we will have our second meeting with our midwife. Maybe then we will start telling people. Only a few close friends and family know at the moment. :-) Very secret squirrel!! :-)

Friday, 29 Feb

Well, it seems that things are rocking along in week 9! This week I am finding fresh plums really help if I start to feel nauseas. I had to bake something for morning tea for work yesterday, so made this mars bar slice thing with dark chocolate on top - really yummy! - and some ginger crunch - you can `t go wrong with that. I practically lived on that mars bar slice in January before I found out I was pregnant. I made 3 batches of the stuff and ate pretty much all of it myself appart from a few crumbs Justin was able to pry away from me! Anyway, I decided to have a little nibble when I got to work, and oh man! Did I feel nauseus! As soon as it went in my mouth I began to turn green. Yuck. It turns out I can `t stand it at the moment - luckily I have no such aversion to ginger crunch!!! Binged out on rock melon and honey dew melon that was also on offer at the morning tea - just love that fresh fruit at the moment!! As for symptoms... my boobs are getting more and more sore every day now, and my stomach talks constantly in the evenings. I go from not hungry at all to suddenly completely ravenous!!! Oh, and I do detect a bit of grumpiness on the horizon, I think I `ve been pretty easy to live with so far, but can definitely feel the clouds forming. Poor Justin! Hope everyone else out there is doing Well!

Sunday, 2 Mar

DISASTER!! Tee hee! I seem to have gone off chocolate!!! This is very very odd!! Let `s hope it passes.

Thursday, 6 Mar

Well, it is the first day of Week 10 today. It is fair to say that I am grumpy, tired, hungry all the time and obsessed with food that I can and can `t eat, I am fed up with the random nausea, the sore boobs, and all of the other pregnancy symptoms. And to top it all off... I can `t complain to anyone at work because noone knows I am pregnant!!!!!!! LOL. So in other words, all is well in my universe... but I don `t have to be happy about it!!! Curse these mood swings!!! Good luck to everyone else out there. I am sure the grumpiness will pass... xxx

Tuesday, 18 Mar

Well it is Autumn and the beginning of flu season in NZ. Went to the Chemist to see what cough lollies I could have for my sore throat. Turns out that I can `t have any, not till the end of pregnancy anyway!!! Bummer. Well at least I can have lots of lemon honey drinks. xx

Tuesday, 25 Mar

Ok, so my partner and I went in for our first scan yesterday. What a shock. TWINS! I am only just beginning to show now, am still fitting my clothes, and have had a pretty mild case of m/s since week 5. What a surprise!! Didn `t sleep much last night. Brain was whizzing all night, thinking about twins, worrying, being pleased, maternal, panicking!! We have to wait a few days to get the results of the downs test, but have decided to finally tell people today - work and other friends. I just can `t hold it all in any longer... TWINS!! Holy cow! We told our families last night about the twins (they already knew about the pregnancy) and each time they thought we were pulling their leg - `you `re kidding.... noooo! ... you `re not!.... oh. ` This is so strange and surreal at the moment. We have got a meeting with the bank on Saturday, holy heck!!! I endeavour to let this all just sink in now. xx

Saturday, 29 Mar

Have just added our first pic of the twins! :-)

Tuesday, 1 Apr

Saw midwife and got 12 week scan results back today. All is well! Yay!

7 April
Not feeling nauseas very often now. Slightly more energy I think, well I seem to be able to stay up a little later if I try. What is with all the bleeding noses and stuffiness though?!! Honestly?!! Goodbye one symptom, hello another! LOL But otherwise, all is well and have another midwife appointment on the 29 April, and our 20 week scan on the 9th of May. Very exciting. Can't wait to see the twins again and see what they are up to... and to see if we can find out their sexes. That would be great to know - give them a bit more identity really. Soooo much going on. Lots of decisions to make - and it all sometimes gets a bit overwhelming, for both of us. Know we will make it through ok, but this is all so exciting, scary and new, I expect we are just going through the normal emotions and reactions! Can't believe that there are two little babies in there. Very strange really. Well, thats all. xxx

20 April
Well, went shopping for first maternity clothes yesterday, tho hardly need them still. Got some stretchy pants (nice and comfy) and a stretchy top (what else??!!). I am now 4 months pregnant and feel absolutely fine all the time! YAY! Still feel tired at night, and have the occasional 8.30pm evening, but otherwise am doing just fine. Can't wait till our 20 week scan on 9 May, and our next midwife appointment is 29 April. So far so good! :-)

Wednesday 30 April
Yay! Am 18 Weeks today. Went to midwife yesterday. She said I measured at 24 weeks!!! No wonder I'm starting to feel a bit achy!! Otherwise all is well. Certainly am starting to get bigger. Might need another pair of preggy pants soon!!! Booked in to hire some baby capsule car seats from plunkett yesterday. Have had a couple of quotes for a heat pump for the house, and am generally pretty busy doing 'stuff'. Back to school on Monday, and scan on Friday!! :-0 xx

Saturday 10 May
We had our second scan yesterday and.... twin boys!!! Am quite excited and now can't stop thinking about baby names. Think it is going to be a long process to decide on names.
Apparently the boys are weighing in at 9 ounces each... or 250 grams for one, and 246 grams for the other. I will post some pics as soon as they post the cd out to us, but they are mainly of body parts rather than of whole babies, and one wouldn't co-operate and give a full profile picture. But all is well and apparently they meet all the norms that the scan lady was looking for so we are really pleased.
Am starting to really pop out now, although basically I am still quite small cause I'm only 5 ft 1 (and a half!) so hey! Will post another bump pic soon. The kids at school (6 and 7 year olds) have now started commenting daily this week. It started on Tuesday with "WOAH!!! Look at Miss B's TUMMY!!!" and continued up to yesterday with "You're starting to get really fat now" from one of the boys, quickly followed by "no she's not, she's just full of babies!!" from one of the girls. Is very funny. And I see the older kids watching my bump as I walk to the staffroom at morning tea! It's hillarious - it still seems weird that it's me with the big bump out the front as I catch a glimpse of a reflection in a window or something. Well, that's all for now. xx

Saturday 31 May
Well, all is well... babies have been moving around quite clearly since week 20 and it is now week 22. Justin finally felt the babie/s move this morning!!! I am so pleased! He has been missing it for weeks... and even if is hand was on my tummy at the time of a nice big kick, he wouldn't notice because he would be distracted by the tv or something! Have been off all week with the flu - but had to tell if not being able to breathe through my nose is the flu or the babies - likewise my 4 day tummy ache which I had. Get restless in the night and toss and turn a bit - then get up and have a drink or something. Have just started the new joy of pregnancy - indigestion! Have read that putting a pillow under you at night so you're at a 10 degree angle helps (gravity I guess) - will let you know how that works out. Start our first antenatal group on Tuesday - YAY - and then maybe will hear back from the multiples group so we can do that one too. very exciting!

Tuesday 24 June
Well, had a scan yesterday because we are having our first specialist meeting on thursday. Twins are fine, but I have a shortened cervix - or incompetent cervix. Really! How rude! I prefer "challenged cervix". That means it is not staying closed like it is meant to. They sent the info to my backup midwife, cause my one is on annual leave, and told me to ring her in an hour. Rang her when I got home instead, and she said her fax was broken, she was at home, no one was at the office to get it there till the next day, so she couldn't tell me anything till the morning. Had a wee bit of a freak out, especially after reading some of the baby books. BAD BAD BAD idea. Lots of words like pre-term labour, common cause of miscarriage in 2nd and 3rd trimester, etc all jumped out of me. Then at 7pm, we went to an antenatal meeting at the hospital to see the maternity ward and birthing rooms - I thought we should go, so we did, but I snaffled every chair I found and it only lasted an hour anyway. The lady in charge kept asking me if I was alright, so maybe I looked a bit freaked out - I'm guessing YES!!!!. Midwife rang this morning and said not to worry (a bit late really) and said that lots of people carry babies with a shortened cervix (would have been useful to know that last night) - but was very reassuring and nice, and I now feel ok about it all and will wait and see what the specialist says on Thursday. I have taken today off sick, so am going to eat chocolate and watch dvds and pretty much make merry!!! The midwife says that I would have had this problem for a while so just to take care of myself and not worry too much. Justin has been really good and looking after me. Boys go all quiet don't they, and I just blub instead. I know he was really worried too. Will be 26 weeks tomorrow. Hang in there little Bert and Ernie!!! Just another 12 weeks to go!

Wednesday 2 July
Well have had 2 more specialist visits (one in Hutt, one in Wellington), steroid injections and the faithful glucose test. Am all tested out for now. We will see our original specialist in the Hutt again tomorrow again for our second visit with him. He referred us for a visit with the big specialist in Wellington hospital when we saw him on Friday. So we saw the new specialist on Monday who said that the babies are fine and growing fine, but my cervix is open and I should stop work now and take it easy (he didn't seem to think that teaching 7 year olds for another month or so was taking it easy - go figure!). He said he wouldn't be giving me a stitch or admitting me, but did say very firmly about taking it easy and going into hospital immediately if I have any labour symptoms at all, etc. I am 27 weeks today, and 38 weeks is still a long way off. The steroid injections were to help the babies lungs develop in case they come early. My mother told me yesterday that she had an open cervix with her pregnancy/ies, so will try not to make this into anymore of a drama than it already is. My midwife is pretty relaxed about it and said she had a twin mum with the same problem who had to be induced at 38 weeks. The only drama now is money, but I think with all the support around us that we will be fine, and we will just try to make sensible decisions as we need to. In saying this, have been buying up a storm on trademe, and now have most of the 'big stuff' - cots bassinets, some pocket nappies, baby monitors, drawers, etc. Well, good luck everyone!!!

Wednesday 9 July
OK - so am low in iron (that means I am back on the iron tablets again - yuck!) but after failing my glucose challenge blood test, I have at least managed to pass my glucose tolerance test! Yay! No gestational diabetes for me! Don't know how I would have gone of the chockies??!!? LOL! Of course, my arm now looks like a blue pin cushion, but hey! Babies are bomping away quite happily. I am 28 weeks today, so if my cervix and I can keep them in there for another month till 32 weeks and beyond then that would be fantastic... and I will be able to have them at my local hospital which would be great. Will just try to keep taking it easy - not as easy as it sounds.

Wednesday 23 July
30 Weeks today! :-) Had a scan yesterday and the boys are both doing well, weighing around 3 pounds each and about 80 grams between them. Will see specialist again tomorrow, but so far so good. Babies are in ying and yang positions - one head up, one head down, and spines to the outiside. The lead twin is head down, so that is good - at least he can lead the way at the moment - we shall see what happens. I look in the mirror in the mornings and laugh when I see how big my tummy is - is starting to look quite weird in proportion to the rest of me! LOL! The rest of me is normal size and then... woah!!!

Friday 15 August
Well, little "Egg" and "Foo" are still hanging on in there and it is 33 weeks now! EXCELLENT!!! Went for a scan this morning. Both are growing well, although scan lady said legs were short (but still within normal range) - hello - look at Mum, very short!! Both are 4.4pounds or more (normal). Now both are head down, and the other twin is now biggest. I have to pee constantly, and the little ratbags like to dance on my bladder!!! LOL! Apart from that, all is well! :-)

Wednesday 27 August

OSCAR SAMUEL & WYATT WILLIAM ARE HERE!!!

KIWIMUM - Sunday, 16 November
Hi Manda,

Thank you for your message. I'm ok really just having a blah before I suck it up and get on with it. I had a re-read to see if I had over exaggerated but I think it's a pretty fair account of whats been going on.
I am starting to meet people but the transition is hard. I have been to the doctor and have got all those things under way to.
Jim and I had big heart to heart chats over the weekend. He still after 7 months doesn't seem to understand what it's like to be a parent. He got grumpy because he wanted to go for a big drive and walk and be out the whole day. I don't think it's fair for Toby to be on the go all day. If he has more than 1- 2 sleeps out it all goes pearshaped and I'm the one who has to fix it.Jim threw his toys when I said that we could go out after Tob's second nap and be out for the afternoon and said I didn't want to be in the car for ages as we went to levin last weekend and are off to auckland next weekend. Jim thinks Toby holds us back and that he is house bound all weekend. Jim wanted to know when Toby would cut down to 2 naps a day......like I can control the fact that Tob's needs lots of sleep, thats just who he is and where he is at.
In response I told Jim that we have to meet Toby half way. He has to do somethings that we want but we have to live at his pace too. This is what being a parent is about. That and setting ourselves up to succeed, ie if we let Toby have his morning sleeps we can go out all afternoon. I also said that if we have another baby the first 6 months will be busy and tuff as we will have 2 people to work around. I told Jim to have a long hard think about if he really wanted to have more if he can't handle life the way it is.
I don't think I'm being over the top. Jim can't deal with Toby, he has been away so much that Tob's is turning into a real Mummies boy. He cries if Jim goes in in the night etc. So it's never Jim that has to calm an over tired fractious boy. Toby will get better as he gets older but I do thing that it's a game of negotiations, not minority or majority rules. Am I being fair?
How was your weekend, where Shelly and Brian down visiting?
Love to all

boopsta - Saturday, 15 November

Message to all This may be interesting to some of you. Seema`s email is seema.modhvadia@rdftelevision.com

Hi there,

I work for a television production company based in the UK . We are currently making a documentary for ITV1 exploring the issues surrounding pregnancy and eating disorders. The film will be a thoughtful and insightful look into this extremely sensitive subject.

We’re in the research stage of our production and very keen to chat to women who are, or have been, pregnant whilst having an eating disorder.

If you’re interested in having a chat or finding out more about our documentary, it would be really great to hear from you. All communication would be in complete confidence.

You can contact me on: seema.modhvadia@rdftelevision.com

KIWIMUM - Tuesday, 2 September
Have to get Toby as he's going to town but just a quick thought...has anyone told you about nursing tea, you should be able to get it from the chemist or health food shop....I found it helped.

KIWIMUM - Monday, 1 September
Hey Manda,
Have been wanting to ring you but I sure your phone has been going nuts, and that you are very busy producing milk and ferrying between home and the hospital. How is it being at home and not having your boys there. I can't imagine it and I'm sure it must be hard sometimes. I guess the up side is you will be catching up on sleep which you will need when the boys come home. How long do they think the boys will be in for now, how are they, getting bigger and stronger I hope.
Did the package Toby sent arrive?
Yes life here is crazy, we are doing all the dumb jobs tthat we should have done ages ago, getting the house ready to rent out. We went to the bank and found we have enough equity to buy and have this as a rental....praise the lord....we have enough going on with out trying to sell in this market!!!!
However Jim is in the naki this week doing safety training, he is going to look at a house in Inglewood. I would like to live in a smaller community again so we have been thinking about buying there. Fingers crossed it all works out and I only have to move house once.
Finally started packing today.
Have to take Toby for his 5 month jabs today....I hate doing it but it's for the best. And to add to everything else the washing machine has chucked a paddy......perfect timing as usual!
Anyway flick me a text as I want to call but don't know when is a good time for you and your dairy cow days

NZmum - Sunday, 31 August
hey new mumma,
had my baby shower today which was so much fun, made it a family and couple of friends thing cos i didn't want it to be a huge deal. had some good laughs and fantastic cake!!

so are you expressing and feeding just cos they are still in hospital? or will you continue this when the boys are home?
nappy shopping is still my biggest stress! but i've decided to not stress about it and worry about it once my wee girl is here. going to use disposable ones for first 6 weeks or so then move onto some sort of pocket system (money being my huge concern there).
how lovely that your sister is spoiling the boys. my brother is hopeless, so lucky i have his girlfriend fussing over me :)

when you're up for it i want to hear all about your labour and birth, thats if you dont mind sharing?

take care of you and those gorgeous wee boys.
PS. LOVE the names you and justin chose!

manda-may - Thursday, 28 August
Oscar Samuel, and Wyatt William arrived around 2am Friday 22 August! They had a little help via forceps and a nice epidural for mum. Both lovely boys will be in special care for 3-4 weeks, but are so far doing well with not too much drama - a little jaundice etc. Good luck to all you mummies out there, it is so lovely to meet them when they come out!
