femi - Thursday, 20 November I don't think you have the wrong idea. It's large city that's constantly moving and people pass each other, elbow to elbow, and keep on moving. The buses and trains are stuffy and there isn't as much green as there could be, particularly in the Bronx, which has a history of prejudice and poverty. But I do enjoy all of the fun things to do here. You can never truly be bored. I just hope to find a quieter space some day because, even though I enjoy the cultures in the city and the movement and fun, I also want to settle down and find some stability and peace and quiet and beauty in the environment. I have mixed feelings about NYC, especially about the Bronx. Research the Bronx ... many things are untrue and some are stereotypes left over from the crack/AIDS era of the 70s and 80s and early 90s, but gangs and drugs are still visible on some Bronx streets (as anywhere in NYC) and it seems a little too gray for my taste sometimes. People can have serious attitudes for no reason and I'm such a smiley person. But I'm positive and I like to look on the bright side, too. The Bronx has so much culture and livelihood. We wonder where to stay where we are or move. We wonder if the Yankee Stadium area will soon blossom or whether we should even move out of state. We shall see! I'll try my best to take some pictures around this particular area! My kids are up to question 3 in their questionnaire.
Bsbabyblues - Wednesday, 19 November Thank you! Definitely not as glamorous as I thought, but thrilling nonetheless!
firstlittleangel - Wednesday, 19 November whew, there is a lot out there huh? I have been trying everything I swear! but it's totally worth it! I hope to keep it up, but now I will probably write more in a journal too...it's going to be so fun!
femi - Wednesday, 19 November Why, thank you! Now, I'm quick to get the questionnaire out to them, but let's see how quickly we can get them completed!
There's a lot of good Italian food in our school neighborhood and, now, growing Mexican restaurants. NYC is like that ... pockets of communities everywhere. I live blocks away from Yankee Stadium and there's good Caribbean food around here. Then, as you may already know, there's Chinatown and areas with Indian food, etc. NYC is very exciting when I think about it, but very noisy, crowded, and fast-paced; it can be stressing after a while. Our hope is to move out within a year or two. I may have been born and raised here, but I'm ready to move to a more peaceful environment. What's Wichita like in terms of things to do and food to eat?
femi - Tuesday, 18 November Oh, and my students are all Hispanic, predominantly Mexican. Our school is in Little Italy which is seeing a great immigration of Mexican families. Big city meets small town indeed!
femi - Tuesday, 18 November I think it's awesome that they don't notice the color of someone's skin as much as other areas where there may be pockets of cultures around. I hope they do learn a lot from each other. It's such an innocent, tender age, too. My kids are super excited. I'm going to try to send you guys pictures, too. My real name is Marilyn. Femi is an African name, which signifies "Love me." I created my questionnaire and figured if we had different formats, it's fine. It'll be fun for them to see the different format you guys used. I asked five questions and left a space for drawing. Favorite movie/show, subject in school, family members, things to do afterschool, etc. I showed them Kansas on the map and they're like, "Why can't we visit?"
As for Lia, thanks for your advice. I hope she does progress and I know the sitter is loving, but it was a tough comment to swallow, but I understand and identify with her frustration. I just hope she had a better day today and that the sitter truly does have patience and love for my little girl. She had an awesome day yesterday so maybe it's the start of something!
I hope to have their questionnaires done some time next week and I'll try to take pictures and mail that all out.
XOXO
julz - Tuesday, 18 November Thanks so much hun, my EDD is July 21st!!!!!!
ihave6kids - Tuesday, 18 November THAKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS.i wanna add that i have not seen them in over a year,so if victor makes it to north carolina i will be able to go see him sence i live in georgia only 2 hours away.
femi - Monday, 17 November Here's something I shared with RobinG on this site regarding my daughter, her napping, and the sitter:
Well, she doesn't sleep well in her swing or bouncer. She sleeps fine in the bassinet, but only on her tummy. That's how she's been napping at the sitter's. Today, she had awesome day and I'm wondering if it has to do with the new and consistent bedtime routine we've been following (starts at 7:30pm with bath, massage with lotion, and nursing). At the sitter's, I don't know how long she rocks her or how she rocks her. I do know she sleeps in the bassinet and it's the only real time she gets bottles and/or formula (if I haven't expressed enough breastmilk). Also, the sitter lets her watch TV (and she's only 3 months! I need to address that subtly by taking down a swing or bouncer or playmat or something. I feel so bad 'cause today she barely cried and napped well and the sitter was like, "On Friday, I was so frustrated because she was crying and crying and I was thinking, Oh, baby please calm down, please shut up!" I was shocked she was so bold, but understand that she didn't mean it in a cruel way. I am so excited that she had a good nap / minimal crying day, but feel bad 'cause this may be the exception and not the rule and will the sitter just continue to be frustrated? My husband made a good point when he said that maybe she feels shy to say she's not down for this because she's already committed.
femi - Monday, 17 November Our website sucks! It doesn't truly show our school and doesn't have as much color and information as yours. We are, however, directly across the street from the Bronx Zoo, within walking distance of the Botanical Gardens, and within a short bus ride of Fordham University (their Bronx site). I've already told my kids about their soon-to-be pen pals and they are super excited! I'm going to draft up the questionnaire so they can hopefully get it completed this week. But one homework tonight is what they would like to write to their pen pal!
~Tarin~ - Monday, 17 November We have guidance counselors too, but they do more in depth counselling. I come in after the school has shown that they have done what they can to help a child and when that does not work, we do a more individualized plan for then.
~Tarin~ - Monday, 17 November I work with children in grades K-5, then we have middle level who do 6-8 as well. As an interventionst I sometimes work one-on-one, with groups or with classes. I teach compliance training, appropriate class behaviour, friendship making skills, and skills to help with aggression. I as well teach many social skills groups, anti-bullying groups and self-esteem groups. On our professional development days I am responsible for teaching other staff members on Positive Behaviour Supports and how to increase desired behaviours and putting the undesired misbehaviour on extinction. I hope I explained it well. Basically, I work with the children who experience innappropriate behaviours while they are at school.
cadesmommy - Monday, 17 November Thank you so much for the diet info!!!
femi - Sunday, 16 November I'm excited as well! Ok, well I was thinking that a questionnaire with at least three questions would be great so that my kids (who are all, except for one, late-kindergarten/early 1st grade level readers) don't get overwhelmed with writing. Maybe even four or five simple questions. For example: 1) What is your favorite movie? 2) What is your favorite thing to do while at the park? 3) Who is part of your family? 4) What do you like about school? ETC. They could even have a space for drawing a picture. You sent me your email before. I can try to draft one and send it to you and tell me what you think. I do feel that the questionnaire should be uniform so they see that all filled out the same one and went through the same process to get their pen pal relationship started. What do you think?
cadesmommy - Sunday, 16 November Hey, do you mind giving me a little bit more information on the diet you were talking about you did? I am really trying to loose a few pounds before I TTC again. Thank you so much!!!!!
femi - Saturday, 15 November Questionnaires would be good. They can be simple and whenever we are done with them, we can make copies and mail them to each other. And I agree that they should edit but it won't be perfect. I'm glad we have the same amount of students! I've never used a webcam before, but we can see about doing that after they've written a few letters.
As for the sitter, she's so off-the-books that we never discussed much other than the $25/day. When she quoted me that price I thought she literally meant $25 for every day she cared for her. I'm going to print out a schedule of our school days, etc, but she's too old school for an actual contract ... I don't want any tension in the relationship we're already building. At the very least, though, I plan to write down the days/ weeks that I am off and, on the bottom, clearly dictate what happens when there's a school holiday, a national holiday, when I'm sick, when she's sick, or when the baby is sick. Sounds fair, right?
Kadens Momma - Saturday, 15 November Hey ladies I just wanted to let you know I posted my ultrasound pics up if you want to look. At first I have to admit I was a little bummed about not having a girl.. But now with each moment I think about my son I fall more in love with him.
ihave6kids - Saturday, 15 November think i should get him contacts? lol
femi - Friday, 14 November That would be awesome! I would love it. My students are bilingual and are transitioning to English, so the writing would be great help! I only have 17 students, though. How many do you have?
The museum part of the fair was exhausting! I had to repeat my lesson five times for five groups. I had a power point presentation on the smart board, but they didn't get to paint because I didn't realize each period in the fair was only 35 minutes compared to the usual 50 on a regular day! So, crayons and paper it was. They enjoyed the presentation, though. We worked on Still Life paintings.
So, how can we start our pen pal sharing? It would take some time to write the letters, but worth it. I can have them edit once or twice but some mistakes could be fun for your students to catch and vice versa. Sometimes, they understand why you need capital letters, periods, etc when they see the mistake elsewhere. This is an awesome idea! Let's definitely get started!
I'm so wired today .... darn NYC Fair day .... :
And I finally got a full check! After a month and a half of work! I was so excited that I deposited the check and forgot to take money out for the sitter. I had to go back and get some money at a local ATM. Then, she told me that I still owed her for Veteran's Day even though she didn't watch Lia. I think that's fine but she had never made that clear (and as long as she doesn't charge me for the weeks or 2-3 days that we have off due to school holidays or national holidays). Anyway, I was so wired that I couldn't wait for hubby to get home with the extra money I owed her and I went down to get the money from the bank and then take the $25 to her, but she wasn't there so I left it with her husband. Leaving it with him was fine, right?
