primetime - Sunday, 20 July
Hello sarah, We were having the same problem with my son. He was a few days old and was not eating and when he was he would puke it up. He is now 12 days old. My son was just diagnosed with Galactosemia. This is a very rare genetic disorder. How we found out is every new born has a test done called a PKU. My sons PKU came back positive. Before we knew about the test we started having feeding problems and we had to go to the ER. This disorder is not known to many. Only 1 out of 50,000 to 60,000 babies will be born with this. He will never be able to have any kind of MILK or MEAT Protein. He is missing an enzime that breaks down the protein and the protein will be stored in the liver, becomes toxic and will become fatel . He was in the ICU for the last week but he is much better now. He has to have only SOY and no Milk or breast milk. Have you called the doctor? I would not wait too long to call. Sorry this is so long, but I want to make new mothers aware of this rare disorder. Good luck and God bless

my daughter was such a sleepy head even if i got her a wake a couple sucks she would be in the land of nod again....what i did was every three hours cahnge her nappy, that got her awake enough. i kept her bottoms off and i would use a damp cotton ball and run it along her legs. set a routine...every three hours....nappy feed sleep. they do sleep alot but i personally wouldnt let him sleep past 4 hours:) thats just me though. i tried the just let her be shell wake whens shes hungry and i wouldnt advise it at all cos she just kept going. if you set yourself a time pattern baby will soon compromise with you:)) good luck hope everything works out:)))

I was told with my first child that if he does not wake for feeds, then I must wake him for feed at least every two hours.. Luckily he woke for feeds anyway roughly every 1-2 hours, but I would have been prepared to wake him if needed. It's very important that they have regular meals - and he used to have about 1-2ozs per feed, so perservere and aim for that. Don't expect him to eat a massive amount, I know it seems like hardly anything to you, but they have SUCH tiny stomachs, that is why the regular feeds are important and you need to wake him up. Good luck! Speak to your midwife of health care provider for further advice, share your concerns, do NOT let this drag on. Coming out your tummy must be a stressful time for the young one and he may still just be readjusting. Do not just let your baby sleep though - it's not the right thing to do..

i really disagree that you should just let your baby sleep. They really need to be feeding ALOT to bring your milk in, if you are breastfeeding. Even if you are giving formula they still need to be fed at least once every four hours at this age. It can be VERY dangerous to let such a new baby sleep for long periods of time. This is because they can end up in a vicious cycle where they are sleepy and tired from a lack of nutrients. I totally agree with the 'get baby naked' to feed comment below. Try a nappy wipe on the feed or even forehead if you have too. Things will change for sure in the next six or so weeks and baby will be more awake. Even though it must be tempting to let baby sleep they are FAR to little at this age! i hope you get some rest and your little one perks up x

Just let your baby sleep...if he's hungry he'll whinn and wake up to be fed. You'll notice the older he gets he'll start to arouse more...please let him sleep and you get all the rest you can get....... I get noooo sleep. When my son was a new born..i wanted to hug, hold, do everything..my mom kept saying let him sleep....because if you don't you'll pay later....and I'm paying now!!..........Good luck!!

Phonics - Saturday, 19 July
I came to responds, but see everyone else has already said what I would. Take off the clothes, run a wet washrag (cold) on their foot, cheek, and other parts to keep them stimulated. My baby did the same and the lactation consultants (two ofthem) told me it was normal. That newborns needed sleep and food. Being born takes a lot out of these little ones. Just change them, wake them up, feed them, and then let them go back to sleep.

My little one is 12 days old so I am also keeping her up during the day a few hours so she sleeps longer at night.

mamacas26 - Saturday, 19 July
get your baby naked, then try feeding him...also, rub his little feet to help wake him up....oh, you can leave his diaper on when you get him naked. But I would call your doctor too....my son did this only for the first day.....

samj - Saturday, 19 July
hi, when my son was a cpl days old he also wouldnt wake for feeds and if i tried to feed him he just slept..i was told to strip him to just a nappy, and run a wet wash cloth on his feet to get him to wake and feed and to try and feed him at least every 3 hrs, to not let him go longer..(i was breastfeeding tho also so i dont really know how many oz every hr a baby would have if not breastfeeding etc so cant help with that if you are as im unsure, sry )..it did the trick..and he ended up puttig on 7 oz in his first 6 days...at this age babies do need to be woke for feeds..ofc, speak to your dr if you remain worried

samiamulrich - Saturday, 19 July
Just read your post on the bulletin....Before I left the hospital with my son, they told me to call if he sleeps excessively, meaning, more than 6 hours at a time, and won't wake for feedings. If I were you, I would definitely give the Dr. a call. It may be nothing, but it's always better to be safe than sorry, especially with these little ones!! :)

slimy discharge is the best sign that labor is close its plug you may start noticing it when your wipe after going to the bathroom. I got slimy discharge with my two kids and went into labor the next day! I wish you luck!

i am having the exact same thing you are! Today it felt like i had really bad period cramps and then my whole tummy would hurt, everytime the baby moves around that hurts too. Feels like he has no room left. Ive had pains so bad that im like bending over and almost crying... i was hoping they werent labour pains, which i dont think they are... i dont know what it is either but if u find out let me know.

icklepumpkin - Sunday, 1 June

lauralou2111 - Saturday, 24 May
my midwife vsaid unofficially!!! swig from the gaviscon bottle as and when u need to!! i do as i cant take it, and did with my other pregnancys x

kismet - Wednesday, 21 May
If you fiddle with the breast pump now you risk inducing labour early and, whatever you do get out won't be milk but colostrum which is the critical first-milk that your baby needs to build up his/her immune system. It is thicker and more yellow than normal milk. Once that has been depleted, normal milk will follow, usually after 2 - 3 days.

mom4 - Tuesday, 20 May
hey you shouldn't practice with the breast pump. i was watching "house of babies" on the discovery heath channel and that is what the midwife suggested one of the women do to bring on contractions. :-)

MyLilAidan - Tuesday, 20 May
do not practice with breast pump. Nipple stimulation can induce labour. You are still to early for that. Your body wont even create milk at this point. Usualy wont come in till 2-3 days after you give birth!!!

hayleigh - Monday, 19 May
hiya just read ur msg about gaviscon now.. i drink it straight out of the bottle, it doesnt harm the baby i just drink it as i need it and when so i have like a bottle a week- no joke!!! i need the industrial size bottles!!!! i also take the tablets, but they dont work as well as the liquid! xx

MyLilAidan - Friday, 16 May
ooh, ok. Thank you very much!

lilmissfloss - Tuesday, 13 May
Hey thank you for your advise - Im going to call my midwife when I get home today and chase up my appointment. Its most probably me being impatient but thought I would have heard from her by now, I registered with her when I was 5.5 weeks. Hope everything is ok with you. And everything is progressing well with you xx
