Donovan Alfred Shetty

Donovan is a Celtic name that means "dark haired warrior" and Alfred is my Dad's first name....

7 lbs. 5 oz. and 20 inches

Born: August 3rd, 2007 at 2:01 am

Mommy and Baby....

"Mother's arms are made of tenderness, and sweet sleep blesses the child who lies therein." -- Victor Hugo

My name is Allison and I have been a member of this site since I was 12 weeks along. My son is now 11 months old, so I decided it was finally time to revamp my page. I am 33 years old and have been married for almost 5 years to my true love, Rupesh, who will be 35 years old in September. We live in the beautiful Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona, where we enjoy sunshine more than 300 days a year. This is my parents' first grandchild so they are very excited, and my sister-in-law and my brother are also so happy to be a first time aunt and uncle as well!

We were blessed to get pregnant easily and I had an very uneventful pregnancy. My due date was August 5th, 2007, but I went into labor on August 2nd and gave birth to Donovan 5 hours later, at 2am on August 3rd! There were no complications and Donovan scored a 9 on his APGAR test.

My husband and I had a whirlwind courtship that felt like something out of a romance novel. He works in the hospitality industry and I met him while on vacation in Russia. It was literally love at first sight, and we traveled the world together, an opportunity we were glad to have before starting a family. Now, he is working in management for the prestigious Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and I am planning to go back to school to obtain my Master's degree in Education and my teaching certification from Arizona State University. I am 100% Italian-American and Rupesh is Eastern Indian. He was born and raised in Bombay, India, now renamed Mumbai, which is an incredible city and country to visit. I've even been to the Taj Mahal- TWICE! He is a permanent greencard holder, soon to be eligible for U.S. citizenship! He's so proud to have the chance to become a naturalised US citizen! We're both Catholic, although I am more into it than Rupesh is, and at Easter Vigil Mass of this year, I was confirmed at our beautiful, local Catholic Church, something I should have done when was I was 16, but neglected to do it until now, as an adult. I am by no means a fanatic, but I must admit that my faith now plays a more important role in my life than it did before now that I have a child. Donovan was baptized in December 2006 and will receive the remaining sacraments when the time comes.

Lately, I have been trying to get Donovan to say "Mama", since he's only said it a few times. His favorite thing to say is "Dada", which he says ALL the time! I was trained as a classical singer in college and now I sing to my baby. Mostly I sing scales to him, using different consonants or sounds, such as "la", "me" ,"moo" or "ma", in the hopes of getting him to repeat "mama" after me, but mostly he just smiles devilishly at me and says "dada" lol!

Rupesh speaks and/or understands 8 languages, but English, taught to him by the Brothers at a Catholic school, is his best language and he speaks it beautifully with a "hybrid" accent- not quite Indian and not quite English. It's soft and very easy on the ears. I could listen to the sound of his voice forever. I keep trying to get him to speak in Hindi to our son so Donovan will be bi-lingual, but so far, the only language that is spoken in our household is English! I think Rupesh's Hindi has become quite rusty in the past 10 years since he's been living abroad and he knows he will not teach his son the "correct" grammar lol.

Every morning I wake up to find my son smiling at me from his crib and every evening, I lull him to sleep in my arms as I rock him to the sounds of a CD of Celtic lullabies. I never thought being a mother would be so amazing. I never believed other women when they told me how much they enjoyed motherhood, but now I know exactly how they feel. There is truly nothing like it in the world! I received a vocal scholarship to Pepperdine University, worked as a sales rep for a large international pharmaceutical company and also as a buyer for a major department store, but no financial success and no personal accomplishment can compare to that of becoming a parent. I never thought I'd be one to write or speak those words, but it's the honest truth!

Below are photos of Donovan as well as photos of family and of our lives before becoming parents. Also, click on the photos tab above to see even more pictures if you so desire. You will quickly be able to see in my handsome husband where our son gets his good looks!

I hope you enjoy my page and that VIP members feel free to leave a message for me. I am really very good about responding to people!

UPDATES

August 30th: Baby weighs in at 9 lbs. 4 ounces, suprassing his birth weight in less than a month!

October 4th: Donovan weighs in at 13 lbs!!!! This puts him in the 80th percentile for weight. He also had his first round of immunizations- YUCK! 4 shots and one liquid oral vaccination. He screamed bloody murder when stuck with the needles, but thankfully the nurse was VERY quick and we were able to calm him down quite easily. He spent the rest of the day mostly sleeping after the ordeal. We gave him infant's tylenol every 4 hours, and he was fine. He didn't even develop a fever.

December 6th: Donovan is now 16 pounds 3 ounces and 25 and 3/4 inches long! He also had more immunizations- YUCK!

February 6th: Just went for Donovan's 6 month check-up this morning. He's 19 lbs. and 27 inches, 75 percentile for both and the Dr. is pleased with his development, so we're happy. 4 shots plus an oral vaccination. It sucked, but it's over... At the 9 month appt., no vaccinations so at least we get a reprieve- Yay!!!

February 24th: A bottom tooth is starting to poke through Donovan's gum!

April 30th: Donovan has two bottom teeth and a third top tooth is poking through. He is rolling all over the place and "inch worming", but no crawling yet! He now says, "Dada, Mama and Nonna", which is Italian for "Grandmother". My husband, my Mom and I are the ones around him the most and we love hearing him "talk". He's a delightful baby. We're just crazy about him. His nine month check-up is Friday, May 2nd.

May 2nd: Donovan had his 9 month appt. today. He is 21 pounds and 10 ounces and 30 inches, 64th percentile for weight and 94th percentile for length! He is doing great! They did poke his big toe to get some blood to test for iron levels. They do the test right there in the office. He is not anemic and it must not have hurt because he did not cry or scream...

May 6th: I was letting Donovan do his usual routine of rolling around and "scooting" to get his toys and sure enough, he raised himself up on his hands and knees and rocked back and forth for a few seconds before he collapsed lol! This is the first time he has done this and I was tickled pink, or in this case, tickled blue ha ha ha! I imagine that in a month or less, he'll be crawling all over the place! Wow! What a day!!!!

May 11th: My first Mother's Day! My Mom and husband went in on a gift for me together and presented me with this beautiful diamond bangle! I love it!

June 9th: Donovan is now crawling on all fours, although he still reverts back to his "army crawl" at times, he is standing, with support, and two more teeth on top are coming in, which makes a total of 6!!!!

July 7th: Donovan now crawls on all fours almost exclusively and he pulls himself up on anything that will stand still and can walk along the wall or sofa, as long as he is assisted. He now has 8 teeth, four on the top and four on the bottom!

Hi Ali, how are you sweetie. I love D's pics, he is sooo cute, i just want to hold him and tickly him with kisses. Wow, mashallah, he is a big boy. Don't worry about the crawling, i wasn't with laila. She learned to crawl about a month or 3 weeks ago, but she doesn't do the normal crawl. She crawls with one leg across (as if she was sitting with crossed legs) and uses the other leg to push her. So one leg is for her to keep balance and the other is her little motor. lol. She has two bottom tweeth, and three top teeth, and the fourth one is coming in. So they only pocked him on the toe? thank God!! Hopefully the same will be for laila, i thought i would have to hold her down while they drew blood. I don't know how i would have done that.

I'm from Trinidad and lived there for 16 years. I moved to Canada then. I lived in Toronto up until 2 years ago. So I love them both and miss them both. I'm in Alberta now and it's a little flat out here not a whole lot of trees unless you're on the mountainous side. oh well.. all my friends are from India. I even have pictures of Shayna in a Salwa Kamese (sp?) i got in Calgary... it's big on her but she looks so cute. I'm sure Donovon will look handsome in traditional wear. Anyway i did send a message to Dirk so we'll see...

I'm with you on the flu shots, I have never had one and will never get one. I think they are just a bad idea, there is a reason we get sick and I just really feel like all of these vaccines, shots, etc are just creating stronger and more resistant viruses. I'm just glad I'm not alone on all of this. I just hope they figure out the mmr thing before our babies have to get it!!!

Hey Allison! It has been a while and I just wanted to check in and say hi! How are you? How is Donovan? I LOVE the Easter picture! That is probably the cutest thing I have seen all day! Ava is moving right along now! She is crawling, pulling up on everything walking across all furniture! She is a little monkey that is into everything she shouldn't be! She is still under 20 lbs, but her height puts her in the 80th percentile still!! Tall little thing! Not sure how, I'm only 5'3" and Dave is about 5'9". If she keeps this up, she be taller than both Dave and I!
Hope all is well!! Look forward to hearing back from you!
XOXO Sarah

Allison u have a good and kind heart. acceptance and support like yours is the reason we pregnant women and moms are on this site to share stuff with each other. only a mother can understand another mother's pain isn't it? i was happy to read ur words, i felt like my story was heard. and i wish you alllll the happiness in the world too! :)) well, it would be a pleasure to write you. so you had PPD? i heard its really hard, i had some depression on and off so i can understand it must have been tough. its overwhelming coming to grips with taking on the responsibility of another human being for LIFE. am glad you feel confident as a mom now. how do you manage, i mean juggling baby Donavan, husband, home, and most imp yourself. is it to do with multi-tasking, being time efficient or just letting things go? what is donavan upto these days? i did check with another doctor. she said its not necessary that a low-lying placenta (which is what i had) happens in every pregnancy. i feel wary, not for myself but to put another child through this. I'd like to have two kids but the fear that I'd have a premature baby again, or having one even earlier than rania at 8 months makes me scared. this cerclage thing sounds interesting... i must inquire about it. anything to keep them IN for the whole nine months! :) and I've written so much i haven't told u my name! i used to have a VIP page during pregnancy but after rania came, i wasn't online for more than a month and my page was deactivated. so i had to start again. your page is beautiful and so well done and makes anyone who read it feel like they already know you! which probably makes it odd for you, lol! pls write me whenever you feel like it!! I'll look forward to it! Nihal

well I'm glad to know parenting gets better as early as 8 months. and lots of couples these days are sticking to one child, can you compare that to my mom who had six other siblings? or my husband's father, who was the eldest of fourteen! what on earth was in the diet of those moms that they could cope with that much chaos? I live in Sharjah, UAE and am originally from Bangalore in India, though I've never really lived there. When Rania gives me a break to do it, will be posting some pictures. she's my little energizer bunny, she doesn't sleep longer than a half hour nap at a time thru-out the day, which explains why i haven't had time to update my VIP page. ps you look lovely in ur wedding pics, you wear Indian outfits well. how long have u guys been married now? you're right some of the stories I've read on here are very brave and heartbreaking. I'm lucky to have her, early but nevertheless healthy and happy, ten fingers, ten toes - the whole package. i tell myself she was in a hurry to get started with the gift of life! now, when i have to plan something for her, like starting solids, i have to add 5 extra weeks to her birth age and delay everything, milestones etc which takes some getting used to. oops, I've written too much, Allison! hope you and your sweet family have a great day.
