"The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow, for children grow up, we've learned to our sorrow. So quiet down, cobwebs, dust go to sleep. I'm rocking my baby, and babies don't keep." - Hannah Joy

Hello! I am a 27 year old American living in the UK for the past four years (husband is English) We will be moving back State side (Annapolis MD) after the birth , will not have been home in two years! .

We have a little boy called Hunter, unfortunately he suffers from GERD. (Acid reflux) Reflux has made our lives very difficult, as Hunter has developed a feeding aversion (due to the pain of the acid being refluxed up to his esophogus) and so meal times are hard. We were hospitalised for two weeks in September and Hunter had to be fed through an NG tube. He has been subjected to numerous tests and medications, and we have yet to find anything to help our poor little boy. There is no cure for reflux, although some children respond better to meds than others- and so we wait for him to outgrow it and take each day at a time. If you have any questions about reflux feel free to ask - Im the reflux queen!

In an attempt to keep up with the times Ive moved my weekly installments to blogs

How are you going with the sleep training?

lucysmum - Friday, 2 January
The house was built in 1876 and our road is called Queens Road. The row of terraces are called Walsall Terraces and were built by some builders from the Midlands. Unfortunately the tiles weren't great, and very cold, so we have carpeted them over. I didn't realise anyone could access the photos! But i am happy for you to look

Thank you, that is noce of you to say that! We've been here two years, finally in our 'forever' house (aslong as we don't loose jobs etc). Costs a fortune each month as we got the highest mortgage we could get - now with 2 children needing childcare at £500 per month (ouch) things are going to be very tight. But i love our house, so it is a price worth paying. When you go home will you be able to get somewhere bigger than where you are at the moment?

Yes I have just got it, thanks a lot will keep you posted. I am going nuts with this sleep thing. The doc suspected Shawnah has reflux too, but I just don't know. I don't think she cries enuff, she is just hard to put to sleep and she wakes up a lot

I don't do STRICT nap times, but I do his naps roughly the same time every day just because that's when he gets tired. The schedule that works for my little guy is waking at 6:30-7am, nap from 9:30-11:30, nap from 2-3, bed time routine starts roughly 6:15-6:30 and bed no later than 7. I think that all depends on the baby and we do have days where our schedule goes differently. Sometimes he gets sleepy before his first nap time so I will put him down earlier and it shifts our whole schedule up. In this instance, I will let him take a 20 min cat nap in my arms around 4:30 or 5pm so he doesn't totally melt down before bed time. So, I'm pretty flexible with naps. Also, if he absolutely will not calm down in his crib for a nap (20 mins or more of fussing/crying), I get him back up for 30-45 mins and then try again. I always do his regular naps in his crib and I do a nap time routine too, which just involves rocking & bottle (the last part of our bed time routine). I ended up leaving the room the very first night after about 10 minutes straight of him screaming like I'd never heard before. I just couldn't deal with it. It was breaking my heart, but I had reached the point where I was so exhausted that I knew I just had to do it or I was going to go insane from weariness. Everything fell into place much quicker than I thought. The first night is the worst, or was for me anyway. The first three nights are rough. After that, Darwin (my DS) started to figure out how to soothe himself a little more effectively. By the end of 2 weeks, he was a pro. If you can stick to your pact for 2 full weeks no matter how difficult, I am confident you will be surprised at how fast your little one catches on and how capable he is of soothing himself. I'm here if you have any questions. I'm by no means an expert, but I can at least tell you what my experience was with little D. :)

It's really intimidating at first and if you're anything like me, you're going to be obsessively checking on your little one for the first couple of weeks, but I promise it gets easier! Just be consistent! Don't break your routine or the rules for your baby EVEN ONCE until you're sure he is set in the routine. Once you are sure he knows what's going on, then having an occasional nap in your arms for snuggle time or sleeping occasionally in the car seat because you're on the go won't matter, but at first allowing those changes can be confusing for them.

We did sleep sense with our son starting on November 13th when he was not quite 6 months old. I tried staying in the room the first night, but it didn't work for me as it was too hard to listen to him cry. It was easier than I expected it to be. We put him in his room in his crib with no binkie on the very first night. We set up a strict bedtime routine (bath, baby massage with lotion, jammies, rocking and bottle, then bed while drowsy but awake). The first night he cried like he was dying for 15-20 minutes straight. It was HORRIBLE! The next night he only cried for about 10 minutes, the next night 5 minutes and then he kept that up for about a week. For the first 10 days he still woke for a bottle at 3am, but then when he turned 6 months we cut out the last night bottle. He would still wake at 3am and cry for 5 -10 minutes and then would fall back asleep. I keep the monitor by my bed but turned way down to where I only hear him if he's really wailing. Within two weeks, he wasn't crying at all at bed time and only a few minutes at nap time. I hope it works as well for you! I tell you, I feel like a NEW WOMAN since I've been sleeping through the night. And he seems like he feels good too! :)

I quess, since he is already fussing and crying without sleep system, he might as well do it with some benefit for future. Good luck and keep us all updated. From the bright side - soon you will be a sleep queen, in addition to a reflux queen. By the time you decide to have another child, you will be able to make some money by opening own consulting business :)

One of ladies emailed me "Sleep Sense" book. Some people in 6 motnhs forum tried this program with great success (look on my profile for their responces). If you are interested, I can also email you this book. I have decided not to do a sleep training as we are not so desperate, my son sleeps swaddled and with paci and wakes up 2-3 times at night just to get his paci back. It does intrerrupt our sleep, but could be worse. All these program involve some crying when baby learns new skills, I just can't handle his cry. I think this program is pretty reasonable and flexible and allow you to stay with the baby while he struggles with adjustment.
