PREGNANCY Q &A &more!

Q: Should I have a baby after 35?
A: No, 35 children is enough.

Q: I'm two months pregnant now. When will my baby move?
A: With any luck, right after he finishes college.

Q: What is the most reliable method to determine a baby's sex?
A: Childbirth.

Q: My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she's borderline irrational.
A: So what's your question?

Q: My childbirth instructor says it's not pain I'll feel during labor, but
pressure. Is she right?
A: Yes, in the same way that a tornado might be called an air current.

Q: When is the best time to get an epidural?
A: Right after you find out you're pregnant.

Q: Is there any reason I have to be in the delivery room while my wife is in labor?
A: Not unless the word 'alimony' means anything to you.

Q: Is there anything I should avoid while recovering from childbirth?
A: Yes, pregnancy.

Q: Do I have to have a baby shower?
A: Not if you change the baby's diaper very quickly.

Q: Our baby was born last week. When will my wife begin to feel and act normal again?
A: When the kids are in college.

Saturday, 1 Mar
Due Date: March 1st - Today. Ask me if I've had my baby...go ahead, just ask....

Well I guess I should `update ` my page...although I must say, this would be the first time! Good to document these things right ie get out your frustrations! Well, I have been having `issues ` for past two months. Which, in the big scheme of things is better than issues for 9 months! Working full time in a male dominated work environment, becoming pregnant and having things keep me away from doing 100% is quite frustrating. Our CEO (who is also a woman) is expecting her third child. Her husband stays at home. S he basically works right up until labour, pops the kid out and is back at work one week later. I should have asked her if the week she is taking off is in actuality 5 business days or 7, LOL! In any event. I had planned on working until my final day, however my body rebelled and for the past 8 weeks has only allowed me to sleep for upto 4 hours at a stretch.

Whether bedtime is 8 p.m., I wake at 12.

Try at 10 p.m. I wake at 2.

Good practice for when baby is here...not so good for when I go to bed at 9, awake at 1 and stay awake as I am in at work by 6. So, via doctors orders, I finished work 4 days early. I must say it is quite the relief. But of course, the `baby deadline ` being March 1st and producing no such baby is really bringing me down!

Coincidence, perhaps, but for the last 5 days, I have been having MASSIVE back pains and contractions but the good news is now I can nap throughout the day :)

No `bloody show `,

No additional vaginal discharge,

Nothing that would indicate that my status is progressing.

What I HAVE been going through is major mood swings, limiting communication with the outside world, heartburn back with a vengance, nausea, crazy shooting pains up my left butt cheek (WHAT is THAT from???), vaginal distress (crazy pains shooting up there too), lack of sexual contact, the infuriating inability to sppon behind Jeff and cleaning house...organizing.

Our cleaner showed up yesterday and basically asked WHAT she could clean, as I had had a go at the house for the past 48 hours. Jeff has been prone to mood swings as well lately...we `ve had a few `talks ` but since leaving work, I have relaxed therefore he has relaxed. My doctors are quite pleased with how everything is progressing, (at least they are happy) however having had no internals done, no doctor scheduled U/S since 23 weeks, and being very particular (and yes, some would call me type A and say I am overly competitive), I am going CRAZY!!!!

I actually faked a reason to go to L&D yesterday. I was hoping beyond hope they would take pity on me, and do something to induce labour. The thought was also in my mind that I might be like Sirat and show up with back pains and find out I was 4 cm dilated. No such luck. The doctors are again `pleased ` with how everything is going.

I am slightly effaced, and not even the tiniest bit dilated.

WHAT is the deal with all these back pains and contractions then? It is actually quite heartbreaking...ok see, there I go, melodramatic and irrational. But dammit...enough is enough! Baby, you're in big trouble buster!!!

Tuesday, 4 Mar

Another day, another sleepless night. My life seems to be revolving around not being in labour, and not having work to distract me is causing me to be a wee bit more obsessive than typical.

The thing I hate is that I have no idea what labour feels like, although I have been told by many mothers that when it happens, there is no mistaking it. I wish it was like a switch either on or off, or like a thermometer, when you hit this temp you are done. The anxiety of waiting, wanting, wishing seems unbearable.

Always heving been a `list ` person, my latest list looks something like this (keeping in mind alot of these things I have completed at 3 a.m.):

Things to Do: March 2, 2008

Finish Income Taxes - check.

Research on DayCare/Homes - check.

Stock up freezer - check.

Pick up mail at Condo - check.

Buy DayTimer - check.

Take SUV in for service...

Have baby.....

I HATE not being able to check things off my list!!!

So I see my Doc today...have written down what I have been feeling, and what I want to know. For some bizarre reason, everytime I go there, I forget something! It's like taking an exam, and afterwards you slap the forehead with a "Oh yeah...."

Hope to get `the sweep ` done today. Have an acupuncture appointment as well. It `s funny, poking got me in this state in the first place, and now poking seems to be the only thing moving things forward again!

`I see skinny people `

I was worried about being used as a paci too...my lactation gal told me to go ahead and let her use me...they said not to use a real pacifier till she was over a month old....YIKES....

LesleyLDN - Tuesday, 18 Mar
Oh, and you're little one is adorable in his wee nest - he looks so comfy.
Being a mum really is special - i'm so happy and it just makes me smile to see all the other babies born around the same time as Iris - they're all so sweet.

LesleyLDN - Tuesday, 18 Mar
I know, such a long time to be in labour but i think she's a pretty tough cookie so she'll be fine and yeah, that's what the text said so i guess she'll tell us more once she's back home and feeling like emailing.
My husband took the pic od Iris then softened it a little - just as good as a pro photographer so i'm really proud of him and of course he's got that pic on his phone so he can show everyone his little girl - he's such a proud dad.
How's things with you this week?
I had a night of up every 2 hours last night - i knew the 4 hour stretches she was sleeping for wouldn't last too long ;o)
It's ll good though, she's such a content baby that even although i'm pooped i'm still really enjoying her.

dolphinloves4 - Tuesday, 18 Mar
I'm having some feeding worries with Evan as well :/ I chose to bottle feed him but he always seems hungry, then if we 'up' the feedings to 4 ozs, he's vomitted the formula back up.
So I've been putting him to the breast more often since he seems more content but I'm worried if it's safe for him to be getting formula and breastmilk back and forth, though I don't know how much breastmilk he's actually getting. Seems to use my breast as a pacifier more than anything lol I do feel that my breasts are heavier than they were since I'm putting him to the breast more often and I'm always feeling the milk come back in after feeding him (that pins and needles feeling).

I worry as well if he's actually feeding enough. He seems more content when I breastfeed him, I'm just really unsure of how much I'm producing. He's just so tiny still.

It's funny how much we, as mothers, worry about our little ones lol. I can see that Evan is having enough wet diapers a day but I still worry :/

Thank-You! Sorry it took so long to get back to you things have been crazy around here my daughter has the flu! Trying to keep her away from the baby. Yeah it's sad how fast time flies. He is now almost 4 weeks old! He is doing great we have good nights and bad nights as far as the sleeping thing goes. It seems like every other night he sleeps really well then he decides to nurse all night long the next night! How is your 'sleeping angel' doing?

Nikki2212 - Monday, 17 Mar
=) Don't worry about the 10 mins! Maximo does the same! But his pediatrician said to look for 6 wet diapers and 6 pops a day. Maximo has a wet diaper every 2 hrs! I have to change him at every feeding.
Plus is he gaining weight? Is he happy?
You are doing great! =)
And about being his pacifier my sister in law said its normal. All her 3 kids did it for the 1st 2 months. That is supposed to make them feel safe. Maximo still does it but a lot less than last week. Maybe once or twice a day.

raeross76 - Monday, 17 Mar
Looks like you have gotten some good responses to your BF question. Before ur milk came in, baby did take a long time to nurse. Now he, and your breasts, have gotten into the swing of things. If you have a breast pump, one thing you may want to try is letting him stay on the one breast for the entire feeding. Just for now. That way he can get the fore milk and the aft milk. The aft milk is thicker and has more fat in it. Then you can pump and store what is in the other breast. In just a couple of weeks, he will hit a growth spurt and will be nursing every two hours and you'll be wondering what is going on again. Just remember, baby can nurse on one breast anywhere from 5-20 twenty minutes. I never switched my baby from on breast until he broke the latch. If you haven't gotten it already, buy 'What to expect the First Year.' It is a God send!

Nikki2212 - Monday, 17 Mar
Thanks! I feel much better now. I will have to talk to my doc in my next appt. I don't think I want to go see him any sooner. I just feel strange and really embarrassed to talk about it.... But I will have to.
Talking about something nicer.. Maximo just woke up 2 times last night! I feel so good today! But he didn't feed much last night and in the morning he vomited all his milk... Never happen before, but I think he just had too much. He is sleeping now and almost time to wake up... So he will be very hungry.
I posted new pics! I love his cheeks!!!
Thanks again.

I read your comment on the 4 month page. Your baby sounds right on track. I also have lots of milk and the letdown is so forcefull that it chokes my son. He'll come off it when he chokes and it'll spray him in the face. It's gotten better now that my milk supply has leveled out to meet demand, but it still comes out so quickly that he only eats for about 5 minutes each feed. When he was first born he'd only eat for 3 minutes and I was worried because the lactation consultant had said he should be feeding 45minutes. My son is now weighing 20+ lbs and doing great. He also would be awake mostly in the evenings at that age. He now wakes up every morning around 7:30am. If your baby is filling diapers and your milk supply is in...your baby is doing great! Just don't listen to all the 'norms' that people tell you because everyone's situation is different!

Jacksmumzoe - Monday, 17 Mar
Hi - my baby is 12 weeks old. He only feeds for 5-6 minutes every 3 hours or so. So I think everything will be fine. Some babies are very efficient feeders and they don't need long feeds. As long as baby is having wet nappies and is happy that is all that matters. I live in Oz and frequently go the Australian breastfeeding Assn, website. It has some really good forums and ppl are very supportive and knowledgeable. the link is http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/

Good luck and congratulations.

dawnybobs - Monday, 17 Mar
hiya - thanks for your message of congratulations! as you can imagine it is very hectic in the Parr household at the moment - with Rudy's breast feeding my main priority (hmmm seems pretty constant but my milk has now come in so I look like Dolly Parton so he should be getting the good stuff now) - I have added my birth story to the bit that says RUDY JOHN PARR (not Rudy - need to delete that profile when i figure out how!) anyway I will be in touch on a more personal note as soon as i feel human again.. but right now I am trying to sleep when Rudy sleeps and hes sleeping now (he has been awake all night almost passed 2 nights since we got home - thats because hes very mucusy because of the speed of delivery he wasnt eble to clear his lungs in birth canal)so i am off to bed!! take care and keep in touch my friend xxx HEY DID YOU KNOW STERLING HAS HAD LIL MAN - C SECTION LAST NIGHT AFTER A 30 HOUR LABOUR - 9LBS 7Z (or she may had said 9 10oz- she sent me a text message) xxx

luvbeingamom - Monday, 17 Mar
I was told by my doctor that if your baby is happy and gaining weight at a good rate then it is enough. My little one did that for a while and i found he was just an efficient eater. Now that he is much bigger he eats more. Sometimes up to an hour. Sometimes he will still eat for only 10 minutes. Also, children a month or younger are not particularly active. As they get older they get more and more active. If you are still concerned about it i would contact your doctor. Also, You have a beautiful baby Congrats!

ragtopgirl - Monday, 17 Mar
Hi My baby is 7 weeks old and I'm nursing and supplementing with formula. I was told that 10 minutes is not enoungh becase the first 10 minutes is mostly water so we really need to let them empty one breast at a time or at least go 20 min so they get the thicker milk with the nutrients. Do you pump? When I pump it's really watery at first and then thickens up like the DR. said it would. Hope this helps! :)

kayla-love - Monday, 17 Mar
Hi, all sounds normal to me. My little one was feeding like mad first couple of weeks and now shes slowed a little bit. Sounds like you will need to wear breast pads to catch your leaking nipple which is also normal. If he´s got wet nappies and about 4-5 dirty nappies a day then he´s getting enough milk. My little one sometimes feeds for 10min and sometimes longer. Kayla x

Just read your post about your lil man. I was told as long as the babe has wet diapers he is getting plenty to eat. My baby girl could only eat about 5 min at a time. She still can't eat more than 10 min but is right on track with her weight. And my boobs do just like yours:) when she is eating and my milk lets down the one she is not eating from leaks. She would choke a little but now that she is bigger she can eat faster now. So all in all sounds like you are pretty normal lil lady:) He by the way is adorable, congrats!

darci - Monday, 17 Mar
HI! Your babies feeding schedule sounds a lot like my sons. He usually eats every 2-4 hours for ten minutes. He normally only nurses off one side and is content. I thought he wasn't getting enough to eat but when I took him back into the doc he gained 4.5lbs in a month, so he was doing just fine.

olga777 - Monday, 17 Mar
Yes, it is normal :) When you have so much milk with such a good flow, babies can suck for 10-15 min and they will be stuffed and sleep long time. You are lucky! Some babies refuse breast because it has a fast flow. Enjoy your long naps :) Good Luck!

buttons - Monday, 17 Mar
That sounds normal to me as well. My bubba was virtually comatose for the first couple of weeks!! As long as you are getting those wet nappies all is well. As he gets older just count the wet and dirty nappies and that is the best way to tell according to the midwifes I have seen. About 2+ dirty ones and 5 or so wet in 24hours I think it is.My little guy only fed about about 10mins before falling asleep again.

lovefranky - Monday, 17 Mar
our babies were about the same size at birth too...

lovefranky - Monday, 17 Mar
that all sounds normal to me. my baby didnt nurse very long at first. it takes about 20 seconds for the milk to let down once he starts feeding and the other side leeks when it comes down because both sides get full together. my baby didnt have alot of awake time for at least a month. i hope i could help
