This article is exactly true. I believe that women should know that this can occur to them! This drug is not given to women in canada, but thousands of women in the US are! Doctors often do what they want, believing that they know best. This drug has been successful to start contractions reliably fast, and most doctors who induce their patients at 40 weeks or 39 weeks are doing so b/c their patients either want them to so that they can be assured that their doctor will be the one delivering their baby or they are so uncomfortable that they want to be in labour as soon as possible. This drug is not pulled from the market b/c it is necessary for it to be available to patients with stomach ulcers. Doctors may be regulated by a governing body, but it takes a LOT for a doctor to actually be disciplined by that governing body- even if their patients have died because of their prescription or malpractice. Not many people know about this and often will blindly follow what their doctor tells them, believing that he is doing something in their best interest- not because it might be cheap or get that patient in and out of the hospital faster. (this could also be an insurance issue- such as their insurance will cover them for a inexpensive pill like cytotec, but maybe not cervidel). Still, if patients are better informed about this issue, then the issue can be avoided altogether. I always advise my patients to question their health care plan and be an advocate for themselves- health promotion starts with taking care of yourself. Thats another reason why I have so much information on my page- I want people to be healthy!

Hi Dirk,
I was wondering, could you please inform me of how to add music to my page?
Thanks,
Barbie

I guess I'm more concerned b/c you mention on the page about how labour is induced and I believe that it's only fair that women at least are encouraged to research the possible different drugs that they will be given. Cytotec does have known bad side effects, but many women will blindly follow what their doctor will tell them, never thinking that they might not be given full informed consent. I am a registered nurse and I see issues like this glossed over as many doctors often think that their patients may know whats being given or to save time, don't feel it necessary to fully inform their patients. Women in labour are not very good at hearing and understanding everything they are told and often make quick decisions. If you want, can I at least suggest that there be links to the different medications on your page from credible sources. I will even post them to you.

Hello Dirk. Do you know where I can find a chart to record my son's feeding times and who many times he goes to the bathroom in his nappy? My midwife wants me to record all of this.
