Our family....

I'm Emma. I'm 34 and have been in a relationship with Mac for 6 years now. I have a son from a previous relationship, who is now 10 years old. We live in Telford, Shropshire in the UK, which is where we both grew up. My son, Charley, sees Mac as his father now as we have had no contact with his biological father for years now. Mac is a great dad and relates to Charley as his own, although he has always said he would like his own biological child.

History...

Charley was born prematurely. I went in to spontaneous labour with him at 26 weeks and 5 days. As I was not dilating I was given an intravenous drug to stop the contractions together with steroids to assist his tiny undeveloped lungs, but when he intravenous line was removed I began having strong contractions again. Beacuse he was so early, he was presented as footling breech and I delivered him naturally with the aid of Etonox and pethadine. It was a hard struggle because I could only deliver one foot and the other got stuck. I don't remember much of the actual delivery being so high on Etonox at that point - everything seemed to take like 10 minutes to register in my head! I don't think I would like to have that experience again. Charley was born weighing just 2lb 6oz and could fit in the palm of my hand! He spent 4 months in intensive care and was finally allowed home with nothing more than a few items of medication to help his breathing.

Mac and I decided to try to conceieve for a child together about 3 years ago, and there have been several failed pregnancies for us, all before 7 weeks. On one occasion there was a suspected ectopic pregnancy for which I was admitted to hospital. This pregnancy terminated itself so there was no requirment for a D & C or anything, which was lucky. For the last year or so, we have not tried to conceive so as to alleviate the stress of watching out for signs of a pregnancy each month.

We are pregnant!...

On January 15 2008 I had suspicions of another pregnancy although it took another couple of days to do a home test - I wanted to wait for my monthly cycle to be complete, but it never came! I did a total of 3 tests, all of which showed a very dark blue line extremely quickly - more quickly than any of my previous tests. It was a definate... we are pregnant! I was out of work on my lunch break at the time, and needed to tell someone to save myself from going mad during the afternoon! I told my supervisor first as I couldn't get hold of Mac. Although he was the 2nd to know. We were both completely shocked and nervous and well... plain excited. We have tried to hold back as much as we can because of what has happened in the past. We are due on Wednesday 24 September 2008, although this is to be confirmed by ultrasound dating etc.

Our updates...

Thursday 31 January 2008 - 6 weeks and 1 day
Went for an early U/S today and it was confirmed that the pregnancy is in the correct place. Total relief! We saw the tiny heartbeat and the midwife said the CRL is 8mm confirming that we are just over 6 weeks pregnant! I had been having twinges like AF cramps and occasional sharp pains so I feared that I had problems and given my past record of miscarriages and suspected ectopic I feared the worst. Apparently, the cramps are probably just my body dealing with the changes it is having to make, so nothing to be concerned over and this is quite normal. Phew! Looking forward to the next scan now though.

Monday 4 February 2008 - 6 weeks and 5 days
SO nauseus, completely shattered by 3pm and eating enough to feed a small village! Sore BB `s (increased by a cup already) and feeling very bloated. Having to watch what I wear constantly for fear of anyone noticing the extra weight gain (I am a UK size 8 normally and wear tight fitting clothes mostly). Had cravings at strange times of the night too - is that normal so early? I seriously can `t wait until the 2nd trimester. It is SO worth it though. Love to you all x

Saturday 9 February 2008 - 7 weeks and 4 days -

Hey, we are 7 wks 4 days today. Been having feelings that I may be carrying more than 1 child! No idea if this is anything more than just a hunch at the moment as there was only 1 sac and heartbeat present at the u/s just over a week ago. Have been feeling very tired like I don `t have any energy to do anything, when I am normally fairly active. I feel SO bloated and already can `t fit in to my jeans, although this is not hard bump at the moment, just water retention I think. I feel very ill most of the time. My test in wk 4 showed a blue line very quickly and very definitely. I am not due for another u/s until wk 12 now, and possibly later than that! I wonder if it could be possible to find out if there is 2 in there sooner than that? Anyone got any suggestions or help, please let me know. Cheers.

Thursday 14 February 2008 - 8 weeks and 1 day pregnant

I have just posted 2 pictures of my pregnant belly. I already feel big but I know that it's not the baby just yet. The all day sickeness has reduced to being just after 3pm until bedtime, which doesn't help with my evening meal decision making! I found that a crisp salad with carrots helps alleviate some of the feeling, but I am still feeling exhausted, so I think this has a large part to play in it. I have a strong liking for toast with slightly salted butter and strawberry jam at the moment! I can never normally remember any of my dreams, but this last week has found me telling Mac of some very strange happenings in my dreams... very vivid and memorable. We made it past 8 weeks and we are so happy! We know that we need to wait for another few weeks before things will be really settled though, but it's killing us to be restrained! I had to start wearing early maternity jeans as my size 8's are SO tight around the belly area now - is this normal??? We have our checking in appointment with the nurse at our surgery next Tuesday for bloods to be taken (lucky me!). Looking forward to it though - never been this far together before - how exciting?!

Tuesday March 3rd 2008 - 10 weeks 6 days

Sunday just gone was Mothering Sunday, which I thought was quite apt for my Midwife to come and visit us at home for the first time! She took all my information / history and advised me that under the circumstances of my past history, I would have to be booked in to the maternity unit with a consultant for the birth - this happens to be the hospital in my next town! It's all ok though as that's where Charley was born and I think I would feel happier there than in a Midwife run unit. I had a call from the Midiwfe unit today - I have been booked in to have an ultrasound this Friday! It was a cancellation and it has been offered to me given my case the booking Midwife told me! I am SO excited. I have been having some shoulder-tip pain today, but I'm certain it's just because I feel all bloated again. My blood pressure was normal on Sunday so I don't think it's anything to worry about since I've not had any abdominal pain. Can't believe we are going to see our little "blip" on ultrasound this week.... YAY!

Wednesday March 12th 2008 - 13 weeks exactly!

We had our 2nd u/s last Friday and saw our little 57mm long squidge on the screen!! Yes... there is only one in there, well only one seen again. Becoming more confident that there is only the one and not more as previously suspected. The Midwife shifted my due date forward by a whole week though, so this is why we are now 13 weeks along rather than 12 (going by LMP). I am eating constantly and although healthy stuff just doesn't cut it I am having to watch what I eat now. I have gained an amazing amount of weight and look massively pregnant now. Pics to follow! It was beautiful to watch him/her wriggle around on the screen for the 10 minutes we were watching. Mac was SO excited bless him - the smile hasn't faded yet! We have our next appointment with a consultant on 14 April, which seems like an eternity away at the moment, but I'm sure it will come around quickly now that we are almost in our 2nd trimester! More updates to follow....

Saturday May 31st 2008 - 24 weeks 3 days

Wow, I've not updated for so long!! Well, we had our detailed scan and everything was great - baby was measuring the right size and all the organs were as you would expect... phew! We also booked our gender scan but the soonest the NHS could squeeze us in for this was 5 July, so we have booked our own private scan for Tuesday 3 June! We will be having a 4d scan afterwards, so will get to see 'squidge' for a whole 20 minutes. We are so excited now. I have been getting kicked so hard recently, mostly in the cervical area, which is slightly worrying. My son tended to do the exact same thing and he was pre-term by a long shot, so fingers crossed we don't have a re-run of his birth! Will post again after Tuesday. Pray that it's a girl for me please! xx

Saturday June 14th 2008 - 26 weeks 3 days

We went for our 4d and gender scan on Tuesday 4th June - We are having a boy! Wooohoooo!! We have decided to call him Alexander William, which I think is really cute. We have been buying sooo much for him and his nursery is almost complete now. He looks perfect on the 4d pictures we have of him but it's easy to think they are real photo's. He looks a lot like his daddy - soooo cute! I am starting to get a tad nervous now that I have reached 26 weeks though. I just pray that we can both make it another few weeks so he has a better chance than being born now. Charley was born at 26 weeks 5 days, but there were signs that things weren't right and this pregnancy seems ok at the moment - I have none of those feelings this time. Things are starting to get a bot uncomfortable now but this is to be expected and I am enjoying it lots. I still have a very sweet tooth and this isn't helping the weight gain an ounce! Ah well... salad dinners through the winter for me ha ha.

Wednesday June 25th 2008 - 28 weeks exactly

Well, I had to have a glucose drink test this morning, which was disgusting I have to say. I have been told that the results will be back tomorrow, so keeping my fingers crossed that all will be ok and GD is not present. Both my Mum and my Gran have diabetes, but they are testing because I am larger than I should be. Will see I guess. Also having an ultrasound every 4 weeks at the moment, which is FAB!

i tried a TENS machine for about 10 mins, lots of ladies say it helps but i found it was like sticking a plaster on a severed leg or something.one midwife asked me if i wanted some paracetamol when i was in labour!!! i'm going to a different hospital this time. LOL
i've always been a bit envious of the women who have their babies (safely) a few weeks before their due date because i always go overdue and its such a let down when you go past your due date! i'll keep everything crossed for you that your little one stays put for a while yet!

Last week my baby measured at 32 weeks. I am 29 weeks today. I have failed my GD tests. i was told when my blood comes into line the babys growth will slow down to what it should be.

You're welcome! My baby has dropped some, and grown so she's filling me out more! Because this is my 5th baby my dr. said my uterus grows faster so baby was sitting very high--for no other reason than because she could!LOL

i'm feeling well this week thanks! i dont know what ,if anything, you took for pain last time but pethadine was good for me! and then last time i had an epidural for the first time and that made labour so much easier! i'm going for an epidural again this time because i'm not a fan of pain either

Glad to hear that all is well Emma. I know what you mean about trainging for Football team. I keep thinking the exact same thing. Ir was quite funny at the weekend as he gave me a really good boot and woke me up. When I then went looking for Chris he was outside having a crafty fag as he thought I was still fast asleep in bed. Busted! Lol. Got Joshua trained early to tell tales on his dad before he is even born. Lol Good eh?!!!

I have been having bad ligament pains also, It's no joke forsure!!!! Let me know it you have any other info on this issue please!

mollymom - Monday, 14 April
Saw your posting on the round ligament site... I feel for you. I had this (or so I thought) with my 1st pregnancy. I was miserable and at times it even hurt to walk. When it started with my second I knew it had to be more than just RL pain. I did a ton of research and found out about SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction) BINGO... many doctors dismiss pain off as RL but I just knew there was more... I found a chiropractor who specializes in pregnant women and off I went. She helped me so much.. I was almost 100% pain free. I highly recommend it!!!! Hope you feel better!!!
