Tuesday, 29 Jan Your dinner might also be more gas producing than lunch which might be why he is spitting up more then. Could also be b/c you have him napping in a chair? vs a bed at night? IF thats the case, try sleeping him in an upright position- like in the car seat. Or you could lay him on his side too with support pillows. Isaac did that until 2 weeks ago, now he sleeps on his tummy (so much happier). I just had to get over the whole 'tummy sleeping is evil' which was hard, but better for my child. If he starts saying 'EH' while lying down, try just burping him and then putting him back to bed. Debra -
Tuesday, 29 Jan How much is a lot? My boy started spitting up more at about 2-3 weeks. Now its just normal. Is he squirming a lot while you are feeding him? He may need to burp more. Or you can try to give him a pre-burp before he eats. Remember that bottles actually give them more gas! I would avoid them at all cost until after he is 4 weeks old. Unless you plan to not breastfeed anymore... because unless you keep positive and keep trying, supplementing with formula is not what he needs unless you think he isn't gaining weight or dirtying enough diapers. Otherwise, just keep offering him the breast when he is hungry and stay hydrated so you produce enough milk. Its just SO way easier to whip out a boob to feed than making up bottles. Cheaper too! I was at the doctors yesterday and he got hungry. SO i just fed him and its so nice to not have to worry about mixing or warming up a bottle. I give him pumped breastmilk in a bottle sometimes now- like when I went shopping with my friend or scrapbooking all day the other weekend. My husband fed him with the milk I had pumped and frozen in the freezer.
Spitting up is normal and part of the process- Sometimes it seems that Isaac can puke up what must be half of what I gave him!! But still, he is gaining weight at a healthy level, so I'm not worried. I find that what I eat does effect his level of gassyness- especially garlic and cauliflower. Also have you heard about 'Dunstan's baby language?' you can google it. She was on Oprah in december and talks about the noises babies make. One of the words/ sounds is 'EH' which they say when they need to burp. If you feed them when they have an air bubble in them, then whatever you put on top of that bubble will come out. Hence the extra spit-up. Isaac also seems to wiggle himself back and forth and says EH. I find that if I burp him while he is sitting up on my knee I can get most of the air out. Some of the other words you might here your newborn say (in between crys) is 'NEH' when he wants to eat/ suck, 'HEH' when he is uncomfortable ie. Needs diaper change, too hot, warm, wants cuddles. Tired sounds like 'OUW' and low gas pain sounds like 'EAIRE' Burping with your son lying tummy down on your knees and patting his back will help with that.
SO just keep trying with the breastfeeding. I know that you probably feel like you are just a cow, but I love the bonding time, and seeing how happy Isaac is while he is sucking off me. THere is nothing better than when he comes off the breast and smiles at me. Just remember, SPIT HAPPENS! Hee hee :) Debra -
Monday, 28 Jan HEy! I read your question on the breastfeeding site. SOunds like your boy is just going through a growth spurt. Mine did that at the same time. I've never supplemented with formula. Even if my son kept wanting to feed, I just fed him. YOur breasts ALWAYS have milk in them, even if its a little bit. People say pump and then you know how much you are producing, but thats only a small indication. Your baby can pull out milk more effectively than any pump (unless they have a poor latch and aren't sucking-then its a different problem). SO, if you are pumping and get say 2 oz, then chances are baby can get 3-4. When a baby sucks, they also get the hindmilk, which is fattier and keeps them sustained for longer periods. When my son was feeding like crazy aka 'cluster feeding' I kept drinking water. If you are hydrated enough, then you will keep producing milk. You should be drinking about 3-4 litres of water (a gallon) per day or other fluids that are not dehydrating. You also need to be getting the right amount of calories- which will help you keep your energy up. The milk you produce is always the same quality, but if you aren't getting the right nutrition- then your body will pull the nutrients it needs for the milk from your stores. You may need to supplement with extra calcium for example. You should also be taking a daily pregnancy multivit. My midwife told me to keep track of breastfeeding in the beginning. Depending on your boy's suck, he may finish off a breast in 10 minutes to 30min. After 30 min though if he still wants to eat (if on one side), burp and switch to the other side as continuing to feed on one side will make you sore and he won't be getting much more milk.
Just keep offering it to him when he's hungry... the growth spurt will happen again around 6 weeks. CLuster feeding is normal and their way of 'tanking up!' It often means a better sleep for them too! GOOD LUCK!!! Mama Kandi -
Thursday, 24 Jan first off grats on the baby boy he is adorable. i am responding to your feeding question. i breast feed my now 4 week old lil girl and she eats 4 oz at a time too lil piggy (she weighs only maybe 8 lbs now lol) it took about a week for my milk to catch up to her demand she eats when she is hunger not by the clock so the more frequent he nurses the more milk your body will start producing. also eating chocolate is suppossed to help your milk drop more (i drink hot chocolate all the time anyway so i dont know if its help but i do know that after a glass or two my breast feel fuller after about an hour or two) also if he is spitting up formula try a different kind my daughter cant handle milk based so we have her on soy and its easier on her but she still tends to get gassy and spit up at night with it so mylicon drops are our best friend if i have to suppliment. she drinks formula when she stays with my mom on wednesdays and some nights when she drains me dry and i get to sore to nurse. if you are concerned that you are not producing enough milk talk to your doctor and he/she can recommend a lactation consultant or have more suggestions to help. the important thing is your lil boy has gotten the immunities from your first milk that he needed! good luck! sarahm -

Wednesday, 23 Jan jen wat i would try and do coz it happend to me sit there with the breast pump for a good 40 minutes and put a wet hot face towel on your boobs massage before you pump and just keep on trying i know its annoying but after a week or so your body will be producing enough milk x nearly 30 -
Wednesday, 23 Jan Hey congrats your little boy is gorgeous. I just read your question on the parenting forum and the best thing to produce more milk is to just keep letting your son feed from your breasts. The more you feed the more your body produces. Also keep drinking plenty of fluids to keep your supply up. My daughter was also 9lb 3oz when she was born and has a very big appetite. She wont drink formula and wont even take breast milk in a bottle unless my husband feeds her and he is working away. I have no idea how much she drinks but I think its a lot. Good luck with everything. xxx Mercedes -

Saturday, 5 Jan Sorry it took so long for me to write you back.. i haven't been on in a few days. I get my last ultrasound this coming friday to see how much he weighs. I'm a lil nervous cuz ppl keep telling me they think he is gonna be big, but i know he will be just what God wants him to be so.... i will let you know what they say. So is Monday your induction?!?!? Your right about a c-section too, i feel the same way that i want vaginal delivery, but more than that i want a healthy baby! Let me know how things go! I'm excited for ya! Malachi456 -
Tuesday, 1 Jan I'm having a boy, lol. His name is gonna be Michael. 6 days seems like nothing... i would be so excited if i knew i was gonna have my boy in only 6 days!! So are you gonna try a vaginal birth? I hope that all goes well with your induction.. i'm sure it will! MommyForThe1stTime -
Tuesday, 1 Jan Hey, im from week 34 and i just read your post on week 37 about your clog.. lol.. That happend to me a little while ago, and i too could not use the bathroom! My hubby had to dig up the pipes and put new ones in and get our tank pumped out! Ours took like a week! i had to go down the road to my mother in laws to use their potty! I also had a UTI at the time! I really feel for you, it sucked so bad!! I got a kick out of it, i thought i would share that with you ;) Malachi456 -
Tuesday, 1 Jan awww... i wish i knew what i was feeling, lol! i can never tell what part is moving. So how long til you get induced? i know you have to be so excited i wish mine would hurry up, i'm not dilated and he's still high.. looks like i might have to wait a while.... Malachi456 -
Monday, 31 Dec hey there, i saw your post on yor doc inducing you cuz of the bab's size they saw on the sono... my best friend just had baby in august and they kept teling her how huge her baby was. I was with her in the hospital while she was laboring and theyeven did a sono like only 20 mins before her c-section and the doc said 'thats a big baby', so when allwas said and one her baby only weighed a lil over 7 pounds! I would def. try to birth vaginally before a c-section cuz those sonos aren't perfect. I hope that helps, take care and let me know how it all goes for you! congratulations on being so close o meeting your lil one! 421honeymoonbaby -
Monday, 31 Dec Hey about your post on being induced..you should do some reasearch on it. It can stress the baby out pretty bad, which can lead to a c-section. Doctors are only suppose to give c-sections for emer situations. The goverment is investigating the amount of c-sections done now. They also pose a threat to baby. Doctors like doing them because they are easy over with. Inducing does cause you to have extreme labor pain because the poticin they give you actually mimmicks the real horrmones your body realeases to make you go into labor. Only difference is your body puts it out in even amounts that wont upset the baby and will dilate your cervix at a good rate. for some women, even after being induced the cervix wont open. ( which tada leads to a c-section) The best advice i can give you is to do some real PRO and CON study and not listen to your doctor who just wants to get it over with. Good luck! colesmom -
Monday, 31 Dec good luck, i hope you have a wonderful experience let me know how it goes... colesmom -
Monday, 31 Dec im right behind you induction scheduled for the 9th. this will be my fourth. 2 of the others were induced. I had no pain meds with the first 18 years ago. I dont recommend it though because the contractions with the pitocin are painful and more frequent. With my son 11 years ago i went the epidural route and it was much better. Even though i have been through this i still have anxiety knowing its a week from wed. niseybear -
Sunday, 30 Dec Interesting. My pitocin was given to me through my IV, so I suppose every hospital is different. Ask and make absolutely sure. OB told me that if the induction didn't work, she would just do a C-section right then and there. She wasn't sending me home without a baby. LOL niseybear -
Sunday, 30 Dec I'm not sure I can help you about induction, but let me try. I'm a first time mommy so I can't speak on natural labor. I can say this though..what they say about pitocin is true...it DOES bring the contractions on harder and faster, but that's what an epidural is for! LOL I had a very blessed labor, only about 10 hours long and I only pushed for about 20-30 minutes. I would do an induction again if I had to. My little one was 8 pounds even and 21 inches long and my OB told me that 21 inches is what helped with the pushing. I think you'll be just fine. Be blessed.
Go read my birth story and tell me what you think. kellya95 -
Thursday, 20 Dec Hey there! I just read your comment about the yeast infection. I have found that when i get that, if I eat about 2 cups of yogurt a day, it makes it go away. Try it out, and hopefully it will help. :)~Kel Leave a message for JenLew in the right column where it reads `Add comment`
