I had a friend that went through this and she locked herself in her house until her appt with the genetic conselor. She had an amnio and everything was fine.Try not to stress to much.Your munchkin is probably laughing inside you for stressing out .There are tons of tests that come back as an increased risk and everything is ok.Why did you have your screening so early?THe afp testing is done between the 16-18th week.In 90% of false positives thre are no fetal defects.

Hi, I am sorry to hear about the positive result. But try not to freak out. I had the same thing happen to me with my second pregnancy and had to have an amniocentesis. I was so freaked out and worried about it. I had to wait two weeks for the results and they seemed to take forever! But everything turned out normal. He is now 8 years old and just fine. I was told after the fact that false positives are pretty common. In fact I didn't even do the test this time around because It wasn't worth the stress to me. I would not get rid of the baby either way. So I didn't do it. Try not to worry too much. I know that is way easier said than done. But hang in there and I am sure everything will be fine. :) Jenn

jeny, by the way, there is no such thing as a positive in a screening test. its just an estimate based on statistics and some data from you. its a probablilty estimate. its just a statistic. so even if its 1 in 10 probablity, thats 90% NOT PROBABLE, right?

therefore, there is no such thing as a high false positive rate really, because there is no such thing as a positive. the only things that can tell you for sure about YOUR pregancy with 100% accuracy are cvs and amnio. both of these have SLIGHT risks of complications, but dont let any uninformed woman who has not gone through what yovue gone through tell you what to do. listen to women who have been there, is my best advice.

sweetie, its so hard to stay calm, but i know you can do it. my prayers are wtih you. screening tests often have misleading or wrong data. you will probably be sent to do an amnio for confirmation. at 13 weeks you can also do CVS if you do it right away - find out if there is a good CVS practicioner in your area. thats the fastest way to get a 100% sure result. you can get results from that in three days in your situation. your OB should help you try to find someone and get in. keep breathing! prayers are with you.

ps- the risks of amnio and cvs are much lower than believed, and go down with the skill of the practicioner. dont be afraid of them. ive had both, they are fine.

I just wanted to drop a note and let you know my thoughts and prayers are with you. I don't have any advise for you b/c I don't know much about these tests b/c we have opted not to do them b/c of the high false negatives and the risk involved in getting an amnio. Best of luck to you and yours!

lynndianna - Thursday, 7 August
I just realized you are only 13 weeks I have never heard of a dr. doing this test this early!!

babydel - Thursday, 7 August
natjean436 just had the same thing happen to her which was who Sara-in-Oregon was talking about! She's sweet and shoule be helpful to you. I'll keep you in my prayers but stay positive as all these ladies have given you great advice!

katiemac - Thursday, 7 August
saw your post. try to, even though it's tough, stay calm until your appt. there is a huge false positive rate. don't panic! I'm freaking out myself, i went for my 20 week ultrasound to find that the baby has a calcium deposit on his heart...which could be a symptom of downs. I can't get tested again until 7 more weeks. I'm trying my best to stay positive as stress is not going to do any good for the baby or myself. good luck! let us all know how you make out!

That is the thing about triple screens. AKAKELLIMG is right, they have a very high false positive rate. And now, the only way to check for sure is to do a more invasive amnio which has some serious risks. We opted not to have one because of this. I'm so sorry you are in this situation, but really, DON'T WORRY. There is a VERY good chance your baby is perfectly healthy. Good luck and please let me know how everything turns out.

Hi Jenyancey

My test results came back with the same - I had a low AFP count. Normally you then have the choice of having the amniocentesis procedure at around 16 weeks - this will tell you for definite whether your baby has downs syndrome or other chromosomal disorders. Its a personal choice as to whether to have it as there is a slightly increased risk of miscarriage with the test. I had it 3 weeks ago and although not pleasant, it was not painful, and thankfully the results were clear and my mind was put at rest.

sara-in-oregon - Thursday, 7 August
I don't remember exactly who, but one of the women on this list (or one of the nearby weeks) also got a positive test. As it turned out the doctor's office had screwed up the labs and didn't average the results of the first blood test with the second, so they gave her a false positive.
Also, if your due date is calculated wrong, it can screw up the test results too because the levels of various proteins in your blood change over time.
Anyway, try not to worry too much and good luck!

Lauras - Thursday, 7 August
I'm surprised you had your triple screen test at 13 weeks. I was told that this test needed to be done during week 16.

windy - Thursday, 7 August
Hey- a triple screen is considered a "screening test" which CANNOT diagnose Trisomy 18. It can only let you know that your risk is elevated. Only a "diagnostic test" can actual diagnose it for sure- for example: amnio or CVS. I don't know much about cvs but I know that 1 in 200 babies are lost due to amnio, so it depends on how high your risk is for Trisomy 18 to whether or not you decide to do amnio. For example, if you have a 1 in 2 chance, it will probably be worth it to you. Also, about 97% of people who get an amnio find out that their baby is perfectly healthy and does not have whatever it was they were testing for. So, I understand that you are concerned, but it isn't a definite just yet.

cherrybeth - Thursday, 7 August
I know a few girls who had false positives with that test! But they should be running more tests for you to rule out any false positives. My prayers are with you and your little angle! Its easy for me to say but try not to worry to much, the stress won't be good for you or the baby. I know its hard not to though! Good luck!!

lawgirls - Thursday, 7 August
hey, i am not sure about false positives, but you should prob. post in the later weeks. like weeks 20 and on. that way, you can connect with others who may have had a false +, but have gone on with great success. just my suggestion. best of luck!

Just stopping by to check in on you. How is your pregnancy going? How's Isabella doing? Mya is now trying to crawl already, it's crazy how fast they grow!
