April 2nd 2008

Hi all, not sure if any of my old friends will still see this but just a quick note to say Millie is doing really well. She's nearly 6 months old, onto solids (just) fully formula fed now, and a real livewire. I still experience all sorts of highs and little lows as she has grumpy days and good ones, but mainly she's so cute and funny and I love to hear her laugh!! Good luck to you all. (photos on my photobook!)

Millie Isabella! 8 pounds 13, 52 cm long, 10 days overdue and healthy!

My Birth Story!

Millie was bornon Oct 15th at 7.54am (Monday morning). I was 10 days overdue and fretting she would have to be induced when during Sunday lunch I felt more mild contractions, each one 15 mins apart. I didnt want to get my hopes up but this time was for real! They were getting closer by the hour and by 6.30 I knew I was in the early stages. I was hoping for a water birth but found that I could only cope with the pain by standing under a shower. Of course that took its toll and by 9.30pm I was tiring but just coping. We told the midwife who said prob early morning she'd see us as these things take time. I was gutted!! By midnight I was in serious pain and contractions were every 3 mins for 45 seconds plus. By 2am I said to Dave we have to call and wake her, I cant hold on anymore. I was in serious pain, but more than that just tired from the standing! We called the midwife and she said meet you there. My big worry all the way through was that I'd not be able to handle the contractions in the car, however they basically stopped! I was pretty much fine all the way into the room. They hooked me up and I was only 3cm dilated but the contractions were strongish and every 2 mins! They gave me hormones to intensify the contractions and I asked for an epi as I was exhausted and needed a break. The epi was fine and not scary but left a 'hole' of sensation in the right hand side of my abdomen which meant I could feel everything there. So I was sucking gas and air too, which I quite liked, in a weird way. I went from 3 to 9cm dilated in one hour after the hormones, and had to start pushing at 6am. I had no idea it would be like that, they'd turned the epi off so I had sensation, and I pushed with everything I had but got nowhere. I felt like a failure really - I'd assumed I'd be good at that bit. I had to push through contractions but was so shocked by the feeling of her in the birth canal, the intense pressure and pain that sometimes I'd panic and not push and then boy oh boy would I suffer! It turned out her hand was beside her face and she got stuck halfway down, but we didnt know that then. Her heartbeat was strong thank God, but I was totally wiped. Suddenly I managed to move her a bit and soon I felt her crown. It gave me the incentive to push with new reserves harder than I thought I could. I did feel the burning as she stretched me which was the icing on the cake ;-) SO I felt very sorry for myself! I was trying to hold her there for a cut to relieve the pressure but then I couldnt and with one almighty push she slithered out in a gush, taking everyone by surprise. The midwife smiled, looked at the clock and said 7.54am!! I started a kind of keening I suppose you could call it, like a weird crying which I couldnt stop for an hour or so! David had a tear or two in his eyes too. They put her on me but her cord was short so only on my tummy, then I delievered the placenta very easily and she could finally move to my chest. She cried ALOT which was great, then they did the tests. 8 pounds 13 or 3995 g, 52 cm long and healthy as could be. She looked kind of funny, with the puffy eyes. What a relief to be done! I needed vaginal and perenial stiches which was ok, I didnt care by then!. I finally gave her to her Dad (after all our phone calls and texts) and had a shower. I couldnt believe the blood which comes out, and how weak I was. That breakfast the midwife then bought me was the sweetest food I ever ate! After another hour or two we were moved into our room. Unfortunately it was shared with a VERY noisy mother/baby and her extended family. It was the saddest part really, trying to bond and feed and sleep with all the tension in the air. but the hospital midwives were awesome and I liked them all. Millie wouldnt feed as I have shortish nipples and she wouldnt latch. So I had to express milk manually and by machine which was exhausting as then I had to try and latch each feed too, plus feed manually! They really recommended co sleeping to help the bonding and establish milk, and I loved that. I was nervous I might squash her, but never came close to doing that, and sleeping with her was the most beautiful thing ever. SHe nestled up to me, face to my breasts, feet to my tummy and sometimes her head on my breast or upper arm, and we slept like that each night for the 3 nights we were there. I couldnt quite believe she was mine, I felt like I was borrowing her! By the morning of Thursday we had some sort of breakthrough as she would finally feed from me with the help of a nipple shield. I didnt realise then how hard it would be to wean her off them though! She wont go near the nipple without one now, so I need to keep trying to wean her over the next few days. We also had to wean her onto her own bassinette, which we have now done really successfuly. She is a total dreamboat, feeds for a long time each time which is tiring, but then sleeps long too, In fact last night I fed her at 9.30, 3.30 and 6.30. WHat a lovely schedule for a newborn! My only fears right now are the nipple shield and that fact her dad goes back to work in two days, so the night feeds I'll be alone, and even though I do most of the work, its nice to know he's there to burp and change her for me. But his folks arrive in an hour and I'll have alot of support during the day which is great. So thats my tale! I swore never again at the time, but now I think...'well maybe I could!'...

hi everyone. Here are some pics I had processed over the weekend.

27 August 2007

40 days to go! WOOHOO (give or take ;-)). So far so good health wise. I am feeling much more cumbersome now, hauling myself out of bed for the thrice nightly wee is getting harder! I spend an hour a day in the bath which really helps. I must say my admiration for mums who have children already and are pregnant again is enormous! I am so lucky to be able to be so 'selfish' and focus on the baby and myself, plus of course the hubby and Coco! (mainly in that order hehe)

As mentioned on the forum I have found it harder lately to keep happy all the time, even though I know I've got nothing to be sad about. Little comments and glimpses of myself looking like a giant waddling creature bring me down. I dont like to think of myself as vain though! I mean I know its pregnancy, and this is what happens. I should just get over myself I guess. I'm STILL working on the bee animation, and need to crack on to make sure I finish in time.

We had our 'practical' anti natal this weekend, learning how to burp and change a baby, and a new mum bought her adorable 5 week old son in and bathed and changed him for us. I must say I had tears in my eyes a fair bit! I cant wait to meet my girl.

Last week I bought her a couple of little dresses from Pumkin Patch which has suddenly gotten SO cute. A red ginham one for Christmas and a white smocking dress over red and white striped leggings. We're being sent alot of hand me downs so trying to take it easy, but man, this stuff is too cute to resist. I will post the pics here.

Lots of love to all of you, keep your heads held high. We're all doing an incredible job at what must be the single most important thing we as humans can do. Enjoy the relative peace before your little bundle arrives, and when you feel sad go and look at a few baby clothes in their drawer! Too cute x

this is not my baby ;-)

27 July 2007

So we got some news today at our 30 week scan! We're having a girl! I think she looks peaceful here...

loulou - Saturday, 7 June
Hey Jen, hope you all have arrived safely and that all is going well for you all. How did the flight go.. how did Millie survive it all! Are ye settled in??

I just love all your new photos they are fab, millie is such a cutie! I have added new photos of Grace and Nick I think from the photos Millie is way bigger. I dont know if Grace is small for her age?? The past few days have been very hard with Grace the poor little thing has been has been so sick for the past week but thank God is over it and is in top form again...

She has had that tummy bug since last thursday over a week and was not really improving on Wednesday night she could not keep down any fluids and developed a rash all over her front and back, i brough her to an out of hours doctor who said it was a virus she had and it had to take its course.. anyhow as the night went on she worsened and i had to call him again and she was totally thrown over. I was then told to take her to the regional hospital where we were until 6 a.m. they had her admitted as her colour went to marble white and they were just putting in the needle for the IV drip and going taking a blood test when her colouring improved. Finally thank God they let her home which i was thrilled with.

Shes improving slowly but surely.

Ya the Alps should be good fun!! There are a few of us going nowm im going to surprise the family i worked for 12 years ago.. im curious as to know how everything is going to turn out..

Im so looking forward to the hols from school another 2 weeks Yipee!!

I'll sign off for now and really hope everything is going fantastic for you all.

Enjoy and put your feet up if you get a chance hon!

Chat soon

Hola
Hope you are having a fantastic time in England and the weather is good for you. Not much been happening here. Seren was better but then tonight has had a couple of yucky nappies again. Shes still chewing everything but no sign of those teeth yet. Lees only got 2 more weeks left on his course and hopefully he will be home soon after that. I cant wait. Hes hoping to get a bit of time off work so we can spend some time together. Fingers crossed. Its been really warm here in Germany so I finally treated myself to some new summer clothes but still havent found the time to get my haircut. Ive got the dentist this week and Liam back at hospital on Friday to get his arm checked again and they are hopefully going to take the cast off, so I probably wont have time to get it done next week but I really want it done before lee gets back. Better get myself sorted and get it done soon.
Will update you again in a few days. Have a fab time. Cant believe you are over our side of the world.

He Jen, your on a countdown!!Brilliant!! are you all prepared.. well you cant really say all prepared until your in the car setting off esp with lily.. i know with Grace im running into the house about 5 times before we actually set off..!! I have booked a trip to the Alps so im real excited about it.. i worked there 12 years ago for a summer and i have always wanted to go back so ive booked a trip for the end of june, so it should be nice. I wont be able to bring Grace though it would really be too much for her.. but Nicholas will enjoy it i'd say.

I live in the west of Ireland in a place called Doolin, you should google it sometime and see what you think. I live about 2 and 1/2 miles from there overlooking the cliffs of moher. It is lovely. We have a 3 bedroomed cottage.

You might just surprise us, and pop by sometime!! your very welcome if you decided to.

hope ye are all doing real well. Grace and Nick and really all of us were sick last wk with a bug.. its horrible being sick like that, cause theres nothing really that can make you any better.

Anyhow hon, hope everything is going according to plan and hope to chat with you before you go.

Take good care,

Lourdax

HOLA
Wow the pics of the house are fabulous. You are so lucky, only in my dreams would we have a house like that. Lee keeps saying one day we will own our own place but it seems like forever away.
Reading your story about how you and David met made me smile. I think its so bizarre that we both travelled to the other side of the world to meet our hubbies. I met Lee while I was backpacking in Oz and after our first meeting we just stayed together. Lee is also great but can also get on my nerves when hes winding me up. lol!!! Weve had our ups and downs like everyone but have been together 10 years now and I still cant believe we are married with 3 kids. Everyone said it was a holiday romance so I guess we proved them wrong.
Seren has had a terrible belly since last night and her bum has gone really red and sore. Bless her. I think shes teething as shes chewing on everything she can get her hands on and she even bruised Megans arm today when she bit her. Shes been super grisly all day and hardly eaten anything but she did manage a little tea tonight and some milk before bed so fingers crossed.
My hayfever has kicked in and Im super tired so Im hoping for an easier day tomorrow. I was also supposed to get my haircut today but Seren was so clingy Ive had to put it off. Oh well hopefully I will create the new me next week. LOL!!!
Hope youve almost finished your packing. I wish it was me packing for NZ!!!!

Good morning
Well my life as an army wife is actually pretty normal most of the time. Since we have been in Germany the only work Ive done is as a part time teaching assistant. It was great for a while but I finished in the summer before I had Seren. As my German is rubbish Im limited to jobs within the army and to be honest Ive used it as a great excuse to stay home and raise the kids. In the UK I worked for banks and my last job involved the completion of mortgages. I really dont want to go back to a boring office job and one day Im hoping to qualify as a midwife. I have wanted to do it for ages but have always followed Lee wherever he has gone so we could stay together as a family and Germany is no good for me to study. I will do it but I expect I will be the worlds oldest midwife. lol!!!
Life on camp is not actually that bad. It has its pros and cons. Cheap housing is fantastic but then its not always nice housing. We spent over 4 years in a second floor flat with no garden but the house we are in now is great. Nice and big and huge garden for kids. Lee bought them a 14foot trampoline which they love and they still have loads of room to play. I have lots of friends but I generally stick with socialising with a few GOOD friends. Living in the army community is sometimes hard because everyone knows your business but we like to avoid all that so stay close to our good friends and that way we avoid all the drama and gossip.
My day isnt really exciting. I walk kids to school then usually wander to the shops to do some groceries. I only buy what I can carry in my backpack as I drive to do a big shop once a week. Then we usually head to a friends so Seren can have a play with her friend Roman. Home for a quick clean up and nap for Seren then walk back up to school at 2.30pm. Stop at the park for an hour so the kids can play. Back home then homework for both kids, tea, bath, bed and then by 7.30pm its just me up and I chill in front of the TV or phone a friend or jump on the computer. Nothing exciting but keeps me busy and I still find I dont have time to do stuff. I dont know how I ever worked fulltime and had Megan as a baby. The evenings are the worst as I get a bit lonely but with the kids in bed theres not much I can actuallu do. When Lees here we tend to do lots of different things. I used to take the kids swimming a lot but with 3 its too hard to keep an eye on them so thats something I miss being able to do. I usually take Seren when the others are in school and she loves it in the water. I also go to some toddler groups to keep busy. I used to go to baby massage which was fab but its always on a day when something else comes up like dentist etc so I havent been for a while now.
Im not sure if I will head back to work if we go back to the UK I may wait til Seren turns one. I think Ive got used to my life of leisure. he he .
We still arent sure if we will head back to NZ or Oz but we are thinking it will probably be more like oz. I love Queensland best but it depends on Lee and work I guess. Lees dad lives in Hawkes Bay and Lee popped over for a week just before xmas as his dad was in an accident and I think things were different to what he remembered. I loved NZ even if we were in Waiouru. I would happily move back to either but I think the Queensland weather would sway my vote.
How long has David been in NZ? Did you meet him out there? You're so lucky having him around all the time. I would love Lee to be around more often. Hopefully things will improve but you never know with army life. He was on the phone the other day making me hold the phone to Seren so he could hear her saying Dada. He gets really upset missing so much but the kids love him to bits. Since my pregnancy started hes been away more than ever (typical) and Megs and liam have found it quite hard. Liam keeps saying he wants daddy to get out the army so we can go to the beach and go surfing. He even asked my dad to buy hm a surf board. He loved it when we went on our trip to Oz and NZ the other year and he cant wait to move.
Whats it like in Aukland? We didnt do much travelling in NZ and the only time we were ever in Aukland was to go to the airport.
Oh well Id better be off as Seren has just emptied a packet of wet wipes AGAIN.
Hope you manage to finish your packing so you can relax a little before your holiday.
Love Claire

Hi Hun
Glad you had a good day. Wow I cant believe your big trip is next week, time has just flown by since you first mentioned it. Im sure you will have a fantastic time. I know what you mean about the stuff you have to take on the plane. I usually take books and stuff for the kids but its the baby nappies and all that stuff that weighs you down. I hope the flight goes well for you. Im sure Millie will be terrific. Who are you flying with?
All good here. Weve had a busy few days with 2 lots of friends visiting and Lees mum arrived yesterday for the week. The kids are over the moon and Seren has been fantastic going straight to nanna with no tears so shes really happy. Liams arm ok. Hes in his cast until June 13th then they will xray him again and if its healed well enough they will book him in to remove the pins. If not they will replaster him for another week and try again. Hes coping great with it considering its his writing hand, and is riding his bike and everything. The only thing he cant do other than writing is wiping his bum after hes been to the loo!!! I hear the little shout of "mummy" coming from the toilet and I know theres nowhere to run as Lee still away. Lee said its my job as a mother but I must say its one job I dont enjoy. I cant wait for that cast to come off lol!!!! The kids are on half term this week but he will be going back to school on Monday. He will still be able to do his reading and stuff, he just wont be able to do writing and PE for a while.
Seren is a little minx and into everything at the moment. She is so fast at crawling and she is constantly pulling herself up which is fun to watch but hard work as she now thinks she can walk and lets go a lot then falls and gets covered in bruises. Lee thinks she will walk early like the others (9 months) and I think he may be right. She is so keen to go that it seems like shes hardly been a baby at all. Maybe we will have number 4 so I can have a little baby just one more time. he he. Lee is talking about one more so Serens got someone to play with but with his job hes away so much I dont know how Id manage with 4!!! Maybe we should get a pet instead.
I havent had Seren weighed for ages but I jumped on the scales with her and I think shes just over 9kg although thats not very accurate so she may be less. Shes slimmed down so much since shes been crawling and even my friend said she looks much slimmer but still quite tall. Shes wearing 9 - 12 month clothes and they fit well so I thjink shes probably slightly bigger than average. Liam was a huge baby though. Very short but very heavy and hes so skinny now so I guess we will have to wait and see how Seren turns out. Megan is so skinny you can see her ribs. She eats so much but is tiny. My sister is like a size 0 so she must take after her.
Ive lost 2 pounds recently but I dont think anymore is going to come off so Im going shopping for new clothes this week and Lees mum is treating me to a haircut. Yipeee. Ive been growing it but its a pain so Im getting it cut back into a bob again. Its so much easier to do it as I have to straighten my hair cos its so wavy and frizzy.
Lees supposed to be back in 4 weeks so he will be surprised by the new me hopefully. We find out soon if we are moving house for definite and Im really looking forward to being a bit closer to family for a change. Our plans to head back to NZ or Oz have now been put on hold for a while but Lee said it will definitely go ahead, we are just looking more round 5 years time than the 2 years we initially hoped for. I guess it means more time for saving but the pound is so rubbish at the moment that we wont get as much in dollars as we would have a few years ago.
Oh well Id better go and get out of my pyjamas as I have soooo much to do.
Take care big xxx for Millie from Seren. I really would love to think that they could meet up one day for a play date. Hopefully we will catch up with you before you go.
Love Claire

Hey Jen! How are you? And hows Millie doin?? Has she settled any bit? Grace has her two teeth also and they are real cute now that they have have fully came up.. she seems to young though to have teeth its funny! She's such a little baby and theses two teeth. Ya its great having an extended family around. I would love for you to get time to do things for yourself too. In one way being back at work is ok too because you get out and get some sort of daily routine going.. i had one too when i wasnt working but its kinda different. Shes totally off her bottles at the moment and is just refusing them.. she was sick for a few days but is over that so i dont know what to do.. hopefully tomorrow she'l be a little more settled. Paddy was involved in a musical its an annual thing, he works in the buildings every other day. Hows everything else going for you Jen? Do you get sleep at night has Millie settled otherwise?

Hey I just saw your post on the 7 months page. Cheer up. My mother in law insists that its a good thing to have independant babies and that they arent grumpy or naughty but they are "spirited" children and it will help them go far in later life. I believe her as she raised 4 boys on her own and they are big strong kiwi blokes now who all love their mum heaps. Im sure millie is just a very clever little girl who needs constant stimulation. Have you heard anything on the daycare yet? I think that will help her heaps as their will be so much going on and so many new toys and people to investigate. Im thinking of putting Seren in when we move back to the UK, just for a few hours a week as she needs to have some company her own age. I dont work at the moment so I have lots of time to play with her but it can be tiring trying to think of new ways to entertain her. Now shes crawling about she finds new ways to entertain herself and even playing with Liams bike helmet today gave her 10 minutes of fun. Maybe when Millie is crawling better she will be happier as she can get to where she wants to be but faster than rolling. Just remember you are doing a great job and the fact that she sleeps so well is a good sign that even though she may appear grumpy, shes actually feeling very safe and secure with you.
Oh well hope that made sense as Im so tired that my baby brain has taken over today!!!
Seren fell this afternoon and smashed her head AGAIN and has a huge bruise so her and Liam look like aright pair of invalids at the moment. Shes been off her food for a few days and not been eating much so will have to keep an eye on her. Still no teeth. I think Millie will have a full set by the time Seren gets her first one. I dont think she will get them for a while yet. Not much else happening except for constant hospital appointments for Liams arm!!! I cant wait for Lee to come back to help. When hes here hes an amazing dad and plays with them feeds them baths them puts them to bed. EVERYTHING. Im looking forward to a break. Only about 5 weeks til hes home. Yipeee!!!
Oh well gotta go feed the kids who are nagging me now. Keep smiling because it will get better .

Thanks for the advice, my girl had her first 4 hour stretch at night yesterday, I am so proud of her. I gave her some tea when she first woke-up and she went right back to sleep. The night before was hell though, she had stomach cramps which woke her up in hourly intervalls. At least I can rest assured that there will always be a good days along with the bad!!

Hi its me again!!
Remember I said Liam had bumped his elbow , well he was still complaining about it that night so my friend drove me to A & E to get it checked. It was obviously sore as he could hardly move it by the time we got there but he stayed brave. Anyway to cut a long story short the doctors xrayed his arm and he has a big fracture on the top part of his arm and ended up having urgent surgery within an hour and a half of arriving at A & E. Hes got 2 metal rods in his arm and is in a cast from his shoulder right to his finger tips. Bless him. It was an awful night and I was pretty stressed but trying to hold it together so I didnt upset him. The hospital was great and put us in our own room and Seren and me spent the night with him. He didnt get out of surgery til 1.20am and we got on the ward about 2.15am so needless to say I didnt get much sleep. They let him home this evening thank God so Im trying to keep him calm. Can you believe he was so excited to see Megan home he thought he would go in the garden to play with her on the trampoline. He wasnt too impressed that I made him sit quietly in front of the TV. Im exhausted now but glad to be home although we are back in hospital on Monday for the start of his outpatient treatment. My tough little guy is coping so well Im so proud of him.
Oh well another drama filled day in our hectic lives but weve survived again so I guess Im doing something right. lol!!
Take care and I will keep you up to date with any other exciting events ha ha
