Well, Jonathan James (JJ) was born on November 20, 2007. He is so cute, of course, and my heart breaks and overflows with love each time I look at him. It's so cliche... but I can't help it... it's true... never have I so unconditionally loved someone.

And unfortunately my unconditional love is being tested. JJ has reflux... he cries constantly... screams actually, and I feel so helpless.

We have tried all the "tricks" and nothing worked... he is now on Prevacid.. and there is definite improvement, but he's still unhappy a lot... They say it should improve around 3 months old.. and for once I am wishing he would grow faster!

Feb. 14, 2008

JJ's reflux is definitely improving. He cries much less, and is in general a much happier baby! YAY!

I started back at work yesterday and had to drop him off for his 1st day in childcare. I missed him terribly and left work early! His "teachers" said he had a pretty good day though... not too much irritation from his reflux, and he took the bottles pretty well. Napped as usually and already has a favorite toy! They also said they are all in love with his eyelashes... they are very long and curl up... I think it's the one thing he gets from me!

When I dropped him off this morning, I got a Valentine from him.. his adorable footprints on a pink piece of paper.. and feathers on the sides like wings.. it's a Valentine from an Angel! So cute!

Feb. 21, 2008

We had a follow up appointment with the pediatric gastroenterologist this morning. JJ now weighs 11lbs. 7.4oz. He is 24.6 inches long. My long skinny string bean!

I am all done nursing him and am really missing the bonding time spent with him.. but boy am I glad to not have to watch what I eat any more! She put me on a dairy-free, limited soy diet and made me read labels! LOL - it's been hard... but I did it! Now that he's 3 months, he's on the prescription hypo allergenic formula, and we give him cereal at night.

He has discovered his hands, and loves to chew his fist! He is so close to laughing I can't stand it! He's started to squel with happiness... but we haven't had a full fledged laugh yet.. I'm waiting for it!

March 6, 2008

My sweet boy had another appt with the pediatric gastroenterologist on Tuesday. He is now 11lbs 14oz.. still skinny. She wants him to gain more weight so we have to be very generous when scooping the formula for mixing. Hopefully, that will up his calorie intake.

Anyway, he is doing so well... babbles all the time, and smiles when he sees us! It's just so sweet... I can't help but squeeze him each time!

His hair is growing back too! Finally! He's been such a baldy... I can't wait to see what color it's going to be!

Meanwhile, my hair is falling out! They aren't kidding when they say 3 months after giving birth it starts to fall out... each time I get out of the shower I have to clean the drain, cuz the water can't go down! It's disgusting!

03/13/08

JJ had his 4 month old check up at the doctor today. He is 13 lbs exactly and 26.5 inches long. That's 15th percentile for weight and 90th percentile for height! Still my skinny string bean!! LOL

Anyway, he has a little exzema on his head... but other than htat he is perfect! He also had his second set of shots... and is right now snoozing in bed... my sweet angel.

03/25/08

So, JJ is finally able to move solids to the back of his mouth and swallow!! Before he would just push it out with his tongue... but NOT TONIGHT!! I'm very excited to be able to feed him some solids.. now I just need to figure out the next food to try.. I'm thinking a veggie....

Message to all This may be interesting to some of you. Seema`s email is seema.modhvadia@rdftelevision.com

Hi there,

I work for a television production company based in the UK . We are currently making a documentary for ITV1 exploring the issues surrounding pregnancy and eating disorders. The film will be a thoughtful and insightful look into this extremely sensitive subject.

We’re in the research stage of our production and very keen to chat to women who are, or have been, pregnant whilst having an eating disorder.

If you’re interested in having a chat or finding out more about our documentary, it would be really great to hear from you. All communication would be in complete confidence.

You can contact me on: seema.modhvadia@rdftelevision.com

Yeah, he's only ever taken Prevacid and it has been working well. As he approaches the one year old mark, I wonder if he's going to have trouble digesting regular milk. I think I'd like to keep him on the meds during those initial milk feedings to help circumvent any problems with that. Is your baby breastfed or formula fed? My son is formula fed with Similac Sensitive (which also really helped the reflux). I had a horrible time finding a formula that he could tolerate. If I ever have another child, at least I'll know the symptoms of reflux and won't wait so long to see the doctor. It is hard being a first time parent -- we didn't have any idea for the first five weeks that he had reflux and just thought we were stuck with a screaming baby.

Thanks for your post. I'm glad to hear there were no ill effects on your gallbladder-free pregnancy. I hope whatever bile duct issue I have clears up without the need for further surgery or intervention. Our boys are only 6 days apart and my baby had bad reflux too. Is your baby still on Prevacid? The doctor tried to take my boy off of it a couple of weeks ago, but decided he wasn't quite ready and ordered him back on.

Hi,

Thanks for your message. Reilly seems to be doing well on the Axid. No crying the past two days! I am putting in her bottle twice a day. Did you mix the Axid with formula for your son? I am wondering if it would be better to give it to her before her bottle...The doctor never really said. Your little guys is adorable!

hey, about your son sticking out his tongue...

my daughter is just now 10 months old, but she has been doing the same for the past few months, but i know why- TEETH! you m ay not even see them yet, but they work on their gums with that little tongue to 1)help soothe 2) help cut the teeth... she is perfectly normal, but just cutting a lot of teeth!

Hi ther! I just read your comment you left on the sleep page. My son is almost 6 months and is still getting up at least 5 times a night. I see you were having almost the same sort of problem. Did you try what your doctor told you to do? Did it work? I am desperate for sleep!!! lol

 He's SO cute!!!

I felt like a bad Mom too. I knew that something wasn't quite right because when I was predominantly breast feeding Giovanna she was a happy content little girl. I didn't realize the connection of her getting fussy with how we had started to give her more formula. I just knew she went from content to very unhappy and crying all the time. I wanted to help her but didn't know what to do. I was so relieved when she was diagnosed because then it meant there was something we could do to make her feel better. Thank you so much for leaving all the comments, it really did help to know someone else knew what I was going through too.

Thank you for the advice. I've read through your entries and they sound so similar to what we've been going through. I was mainly breastfeeding until we moved our things from the attic to the first floor apartment of the house. I needed to spend hours bringing things down and couldn't keep up with the breastfeeding since she was pretty much constantly nursing. The more bottles she got the more cranky she became. Now she gets more bottles than breast milk. What a relief to finally have her diagnosed and get our happy baby back. All she needed was the medicine and a formula change. She still has some fussy moments but I think that is the normal amount a baby should have. Did you go through issues with your little guy not wanting to take the bottle? She would breast feed no problem but was refusing the bottle. We still have some problems getting her to take the bottle but at least now she isn't thrashing her head side to side. It does take a lot of patience and encouragement to get her to take the bottle but once she does she usually sticks with it. How many ounces of formula does JJ drink at a time? Thank you for all your help, it is nice to know there are other people out there that have gone through this and have an understanding of what I'm going through.

I agree- I can't wait until mine grows out of this too!! She had a REALLY bad day yesterday but is having a good day so far today. Does JJ go back and forth like that? It's weird, some days it's like there's absolutely nothing wrong with her and other days.....geesh! Her bad days are usually the days I have a lot of running around to do... I was about ready to run her to the hospital yesterday, it was horrible. Hardly nothing coming up today....(knock on wood...)

Hi, my 6 wk. old baby girl, Ava, has reflux also. She's gaining weight great and isn't fussy. She just pukes constantly! It comes up through her nose and then she panics and holds her breath, stopped breathing a few times in the hospital which got her an apnea monitor. Her doctor is finally sending her to an ear, nose, throat specialist to see why it keeps coming up through her nose. I can't lay her on her back, EVER. She's either in her car seat or propped up on a pillow. My mom found a bassinet that raises up at the head but I don't know what we're going to do when she outgrows that. If I lay her on her back, everything immedietly flows out her nose. Her doctor said her palate was fine so we don't understand WHY she does this. Can't wait to see the specialist on Mon.! You might try the Dr. Brown bottles, they seem to help Ava a little. I can't even see her pretty outfits because they're always covered in a bib (which I own about a hundred of those things now and STILL don't seem to have enough!). She's on Zantac which I didn't think was helping until I missed a dose... I'll never miss a dose again--she was shooting vomit clear across the room and it took forever to get her to keep her next dose down! It's really turning into a nightmare! She's really not fussy though and sleeps VERY well at night (midnight to about 6:30 am!).

I'm scared to let people hold her because I just know she's going to puke all over them because people want to lay her back so they can get a look at her...and I'm there going "NO!! Put her on your shoulder!!!" I'm sure they all think I'm nuts as they don't seem to understand how BAD it is. Sometimes I think they think I'm over reacting. They don't see her panic and hold her breath when it comes up her nose though!

Your JJ is doing better? Do you think anything in particular helped or do you think he's maybe just growing out of it?

He's a cutie! Congrats!

Oh thank you so much for your posts and words of encouragement about this reflux thing. Gosh, its aweful. It is so nice to have this website for support.

Thank you for sharing your reflux story. I feel so badly for my little guy. I just hope he feels better soon. Quick question, do you let him be on his back much? I'm wondering if my baby needs to be elevated constantly or if I can let him lay in his gym or play yard and play. I'll probably post the same question in the forum too, but I'd like to get your perspective since you seem to really know your stuff. Thank you.

Also, his weight gain is in the 75th percentile...sothat is not an issue.

Your baby is a cutie! My son is five weeks and they are trying to put him on zantac for reflux...he cries for about 15 minutes after eating but i dont know if its gas or reflux....he did it at three weeeks, stopped for a week and a half, now he is doing it again....what did your son do to convince you??

Hi, just read your comment abt hemmi. I went though the same situation as yours a year ago. I wasn't pregnant then, but was having on-going constipation problems. So that gave me a fissure. When you get a fissure, a small amount of skin tab will grow at that part to cover the fissure up called sentinel tag. So its not exactly hemorrhoids. I had two of those tags, and passing stool was extremely painful. Due to the trauma on that part, the muscles around there sort of tense when you have a bowel movement, making it even more difficult for the stool to pass through. I was at a point where my stool was soft, but it was still dead painful to have a bowel movement. I consulted a colorectal surgeon who recommended lateral sphincterotomy. A small procedure which i decided to go through with coz the pain was unbearable. Trust me, i'm glad i went for it. I was under general anaesthesia and the procedure only lasted 10 mins. It was painful down there on the day of the surgery, but i felt fine the next day. I had a bowel movement the next day and i was amazed to find out that there wasn't even a little bit of pain!!. I never had the problem again after that, but of course, i made sure i didn't get constipated so badly again. Try talking to a colorectal surgeon since you've been having this prob for months. It worked for me.

kbaby - Saturday, 19 April
how do you know if you have a fissure?

estellablu - Friday, 18 April
Hey! awww, JJ had the flu? poor baby...hope he gets better soon! the new house is good...still needs some touches added, but we'll get there over time. It's FINALLY getting nice out here (today it's 80 degrees!) so i'll be able to take Brody outside and for walks. YAY :)

stcy2113 - Friday, 18 April
I would have it checked out by a Dr since it has been going on so long. Hope you start to feel better.
