My profile

Hi, my name is Lesley. I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on June 16, 1970 but was raised in Toronto, Canada from 1972 on. In 2002, the most wonderful man talked his way into my life. Why do I say talked? Because he was in Greece and I was in Canada! I was working in marketing/advertising and was thinking about branching out on my own. A supplier contact knew this was my plan and had a relative in Greece who wanted to launch a product in Canada. Not wanting to pay Agency prices, he hooked me up with them and the only English speaking contact was the graphic artist, Lambros. Fast forward 6 months and I finally figured out that this campaign had died but Lambros was still emailing, still calling and BAM - it literally exploded before my eyes - he was interested in ME which is why he kept in contact! On October 14th, he came to visit me in Toronto and we knew then that we were meant to be together. Our hearts were ripped out when he left to go home 9 days later, but I promised to be with him for New Year's Eve. And I was!

It was at that time that we decided, to give us a fair chance, someone has to move! And me having EU status having been born in the UK, was the easiest solution. So...I sold my house, quit my job, packed up my life and moved to Greece in March 2003. Fast forward another 5 years...we just got married in March 2008 although we tried desparately to make it happen while my parents and sister were visiting from Canada during Christmas 2007. And in February, we received the BEST wedding gift ever. We are pregnant!!

I am turning 38 on June 16th and have waited many years for the news we received in February. We couldn't be happier and pregnancy has been a true blessing and breeze up till now. I'm 1/2 way there and hope the last 1/2 is just as easy. We are having a 3D u/s on June 17th and hoping that our little one will give mommy her birthday present by letting us see if this is a little prince or princess. My instinct from the beginning has been a little prince - we are about to find out! If not on the 17th then...we will just have to wait till October 20th!

Would love to hear your stories and how pregnancy is for you! Wishing you all healthy pregnancies and wonderful births to be shared later!!!

xox

How`s my pregnancy doing?

Thank you so much for replying to my post. And you are so right. Every woman is beautiful. I'm sure I'll get over it. Maybe it’s just because I'm in my ugly work uniform (scrubs) and its not too flattering...haha. I read your story. I'm so happy for you and wish you and your husband all the blessings in the world. May god bless you and your precious little one. Take care and keep in touch.

Thanx! yum peaches! All our watermelon comes from mexico, doesn't grow well in our area. Not very juicy or sweet by the time we get it! I already have 3 boys, 1 girl. They are arguing about what they want. we are going to find out so they can get used to it before the baby comes. I really have no preference. I'm sure your baby is going to b beautiful!!

Sounds like you are a tough girl! All I want is fruit! So hot here! I am feeling better. Wasn't really sick, just felt bloated! My sister has diabetes & she struggles all the time. I worry about it but so far I have dodged that bullet! I hope you do well, you have a great incentive! We go for our u/s on Monday, hopefully they will be able to tell what it is. My husband thinks a girl, we'll see. Good luck!!x

Hi,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I just read your profile and I was wondering what it was like as a non-Greek Canadian living in Greece?
My husband is of Greek decent (I'm half Italian, half Jewish) and we were both born in Canada. We love it here, but hate the winters. He always says that it would be nice to move to Thessaloniki. His father has a summer home near there... near Larissa, I think. We were planning on going this summer but I obviously couldn't make it:) But I'm looking forward to next summer! Anyways regarding moving there... I don't speak Greek and obviously can't read it. How did you find the adjustment? How did you find work?
You're obviously going to raise your child there...what are the pros/cons about doing that versus raising a child in Toronto?

HI! It is totally fantastic to be done with work for such a long time!! Several of my colleagues asked me if it felt strange when I was at work last friday (my last day), but to be honest it didn't really seem odd at all. Normally I would finish around about the same time for my 8 week summer vacation, so it just felt as though I was off for my normal holiday period. I think what will seem more strange will be when it gets to September and I don't have to go back in!

It must be tough for you losing so many colleagues over the last 6 months. I guess you are getting pretty accomplished at goodbyes now! It is amazing that your former colleagues have taken up new jobs in so many different countries. I hope you can manage to keep in touch with them.

Only a little over a week and you will be finished too! I hope that your last week isn't too tough. It must be strange to think that you won't be going back after your maternity leave. You sound as though you have a lot planned when you finished, which is great.

I am staying at my parents house for a week at the moment and catching up with a lot of family and some friends. Strangely, I am also due to meet up with a friend from Sweden. We went to school together in the town where my parents still live and she emigrated to Sweden about 4 years ago. She is coming back to visit her family this week also and we will be able to get together for a couple of days which will be great. I only tend to see her once a year, so we always try to make the most of our time together. I am looking forward to her arrival at the end of this week.

Have you had any news from all the testing you were having done for GD etc.? I hope everything is OK.
Take care, VAlerie x

You do not lie when you say that privacy is nonexistent. I thought I was going to have a pilgrims pride puritanical breakdown in the hospital. First of all, when I walked through labor and delivery, there was a lady on the table in childbirth with the door WIDE OPEN! AND THEN....when they came in to do cervical checks, they would perform them regardless of the patient in the other bed. There were no curtains and
"all of your business was out in the street" as they say in the south.
I know when I had to go down to the first floor of the hospital with my husband to register my daughter's birth, I put on my street clothes. Well, the other ladies were downstairs in the common area with night gowns on and to make it so bad, some of them were very sheer. In the meantime, they asked me why I had on street clothes and wondered if I had been discharged.
I have the hardest time with things of this nature because I grew up with my mother's side of the family who are bible thumping Pentacostals from South Carolina. LOL! As far as questions, I can still say, "no parlo italiano or no capisco and they give up trying.

I would love to send one of those colorful congratulations. However, I have no idea where other people are getting them from. Congratulations!

I am actually living in Tuscany in the province of Livorno. It's very modern and has everything from the beach, to the countryside to the suburbs. In many ways, it reminds me of Long island where I grew up. I have to definitely adjust to the culture and get a better command of the language: then I will be able to enjoy it better. I like the area but the people are too curious for me. I feel as if I am always on display so now that I have had the baby, I am actually ashamed to go out until I am completely back to normal. The people here look no differently than Americans in their style of dress. However, they have a tendency to stare and I always feel pressured to look perfect because I am on display. It is really difficult.
Other than that I am enjoying it. I miss Burger king, American styled breakfast, and certain beauty products but I make do. How is your experience in Greece?

Hi!
Sorry to hear about all the testing you are having to have done at the moment! I can imagine that it must be a bit of a pain! Like you said though, it is in a good cause and it is best to be careful. In a way it is re-assuring to find that you are getting such good care. I had some blood taken a week ago to test for sugar, but I haven't heard anything. I just have to presume that they would get in touch with me if there was any cause for concern. I am not going to worry about it too much!!

I can't believe that you were asked not to eat all of those fruits you listed!! I couldn't survive without eating fruit at the moment. We have had lots and lots of strawberries as they have been in season in the UK recently. Sadly some of the fruit you mention (like watermelon) is quite expensive here, otherwise I am sure I would be eating a lot of that too!

like you, I haven't been eating so much chocolate...much less than before I was pregnant. It is funny how pregnancy affects the diet that you have so much.

The 8th will soon be here - before you know it you will be able to sit with you feet up relaxing at home in the cool a/c! Time seems to drag a bit over the last week or two - hang in there!
Last day at work today - YIPPEEE!!

Have a great weekend
Love, Val x
