Our Bubba at 19 weeks.--------------------------------------------------and our other Bubbas!

We are having our first child, but already have two babies! Hope their noses aren't put out of joint when bugalugs arrives!

Our Journey so far....

  • 5 weeks 4 days - We discovered we were pregnant via 4 tests! Yes we couldn't believe it!
  • 6 weeks 3 days and our first ultrasound to confirm dates. It was wonderful to see everything is where it should be and a crown to rump length (CRL) of 7.1mm with a heart rate of 120bpm to match. Technology is amazing! Can't wait for the next ultrasound!
  • 9 weeks into our first pregnancy and we are so very excited. We cannot stop thinking about every little change and stage that we will go through in the coming months and years! The process is unbelievable! Even through all of the nausea and morning sickness, I remind myself that it is all worth it!
  • 11 weeks 4 days and an ultrasound today! Such beautiful images to see. Lots of thumb sucking, some jumps and a wave. Crown to rump length (CRL) of 54.2mm. My partner said "don't forget to include the point 2!" The heart rate was beating at 163bpm. Nuchal fold tests and blood work revealed low risk.

    Bugalugs at 19 weeks

  • 13 weeks - 4 days - Heart rate measured by a doppler at 135bpm. Bub was moving a lot with strong kicks that I could hear but not feel. CRL of 8cm and my belly is really starting to grow.
  • At 15 weeks and 5 days the heart rate was at 155bpm. Again baby was kicking loudly on the doppler but I cannot feel such sensations yet! Perhaps we are having a soccer player! Babes CRL is 10.5cm.
  • At 16 weeks 5 days the heart rate was at 145 bpm. An unrelated ultrasound enabled me to get some glimpses of bubba and revealed our baby has grown a lot. Bones are now calcifying and bubba looks like a little fatty now. Chunky little hands, legs, arms and belly and one enormously wide umbilical cord. There was a lady in the news who gave birth to a 17lb baby this week. God forbid if that happens to me! Still waiting for any sensations of movement to begin! Baby has a CRL of 13cm. Almost into maternity clothes now!
  • 18 weeks 1 day - I think I may be feeling movement. But not entirely sure yet.
  • 18 weeks 5 days - my belly is officially huge already. I feel 8 months pregnant. Just bought a stethoscope on Ebay because I heard that after about 20 weeks you can hear the babies heart rate and movement with one. So very excited to start using it!
  • 19 weeks - Ultrasound at 19 weeks. What a day! Baby was very cheeky and was not in a good position to have all of the organs tested and measured. Also kept moving as well, so a lot of the images were blurred. The technician could not get adequate pictures of bubba's heart, so I had to return twice. We tried to move bubba by having me lay on my stomach, going for a walk, having a sugary drink, and when I returned the little blighter was still in the same impossible spot. Not going to cooperate. Still don't know if bubba is a girl or boy!!!!! So will just have to wait till the grand entrance. Everyone keeps telling me it is going to be a girl! Heart rate was measured at 141bpm. Bubba's measurements are on track! But the CRL is not measured anymore as it is too difficult to judge. Textbooks list it as CRL of 15cm at 19 weeks! Last time I thought it looked like a little fatty, but now looks normal so I guess I'm not having a 17lb baby after all! Phewwwww!!!! Bubba's weight is 5 days ahead at 297 grams or 10.5 Ounces! Measurements of the Head Circumference (HC), The Abdominal circumference (AC), and the The Biparietal diameter (BFD) put bubba at about 19 and a half weeks (5 days ahead) but The Femur length (FL) was on track. Femur length can be longer or shorter and nothing to worry about. Unless it is very short which can be an indicator of dwarfism. Images from this ultrasound can be watched here, or are also at http://youtube.com/watch?v=4kepuATj4TA
  • 19 weeks 1 day - well it IS OFFICIAL!!!!! The quickening has occurred!!! I now believe I am feeling bubba. Little light flicks in my abdomen, on an off for nearly a week when I am laying down and sleeping. But haven't thought they were bubba. My hubby can't yet feel these from the outside, but I can probably because I have the inside sensation as well. Wouldn't describe it as gas, butterflies or popcorn. More the sensation you get when you have a very small muscle spasm somewhere on your body. Little flicks telling me someone is there! Priceless. It is so exciting!
  • 19 weeks 5 days - the stethoscope is proving useful, can't here the heart rate but can hear lots of kicks and movement through it and hubby can hear bub even though he can't yet feel bub from the outside! If I haven't felt bub move for a while, I can just listen with the scope to all of the activity going on. Magic!
  • 20 weeks Yay! Bubba is kicking like crazy today! Heart rate measured at 153bpm.
  • 20 weeks 4 days - heart rate 140bpm!
  • 21 weeks 2 days and daddy finally felt bubba from the outside! Bubba kicking all the time now and quite strong at times too, all over the tummy, high and low, and at the internal organs as well, especially the bladder and cervix, yikes! Bubba's CRL would be about 18.5cm long and weighs about 400g now.
  • 23 weeks 2 days - Baby has been kicking where I listen to my belly with a stethoscope. The kicks and punches will follow the scope about 300 degrees around my belly with he exception of the top left of my belly - hmmm I wonder if that is where my placenta is attached?. Very funny. Already likes playing games.
  • 24 weeks - Yay! 24 weeks 1 day and I finally found bubbas heart rate last night with the cheap stethoscope I bought! Bubba is really aware of my touch and will follow the scope or the touch of my hand around the belly. Amazing! Heart rate was at 141bpm.
  • 26 weeks - 99 days left today, and week 26! Last night my stomach felt like it was going to burst. Very uncomfortable and I was unable to sleep. Bubba must be feeling so cramped in there! I felt a foot or something like it for the first time so I woke hubby up and grabbed his hand and he felt it to. Awesome!
  • 27 weeks 7 days - 85 days till 40 weeks. Lots of new health issues appearing now. Since week 12 I have been experiencing right upper quadrant pain which doctors suspect is the gall bladder but ultrasounds have shown no stones or inflammation. Essentially I have to fast for these ultrasounds - and by not eating the pain goes away and hence the ultrasound shows nothing! I have also been having episodes of feeling faint and having to sit down and a racing heart. Two days ago, I failed the glucose screening test with results at 144mcg's or 8.0, when normal is less than 140mcg's or 7.8. Failing this test made me think about my pancreas - it produces insulin to reduce blood glucose levels but in some pregnant women the hormones from the placenta block the production of insulin. I have had pain since about week 12 - so maybe it is not my gall bladder at all but the pancreas instead which is right next to it. So today I had the full 10 hour fast to ascertain if I now have gestational diabetes. I drank 75 grams of glucose and gave 3 blood samples over several hours. In pregnancy, the 100 gram test is recommended and 4 blood samples are taken so I hope my practitioners know what they are doing! Tomorrow I get the results for this and for my bladder condition, my liver function, iron levels, and thyroid function as I was borderline hyperglycemic when I got pregnant. I will also have my Anti-D Rhogam injection tomorrow because I have a negative blood type as well and this will prevent my antibodies attacking the baby if it has a positive blood type and there is an exchange of our blood. I started to get a bit down about all of these issues - Have I done something wrong - could I have had better care and preparation through pregnancy? But I guess some women sail through pregnancy, and others have a really difficult time. With all the nutrition, exercise and rest in the world new health issues for me just keep cropping up, yet my baby appears healthy and happy. It's just that my body doesn't know how to take care of me at the moment. Heres hoping all of these issues disappear when the little one comes!
  • 28 weeks 1 day - Well what a crazy couple of days that ended with at diagnosis for GD! Was really lucky to get into my hospital and see some great professionals in diabetic education as well as a midwife and a dietician to be set up to self monitor my glucose levels over Christmas. Need to ascertain if I will need insulin injections or not. It is kind of a relief to have a diagnosis. I knew something definitely was not right 2 weeks ago with severe fatigue, ridiculous thirst and frequent urination. Essentially feeling unwell or chronically tired most of the time having up to 5 naps a day - cannot function.. I have been having pancreatic/gall bladder/liver pain since week 13 of my pregnancy and they had cleared me of any stones or tumors - so issues with insulin production makes a lot of sense at causing stress and pain in that area of my body. Today I was also told my liver function is impaired too, but all other tests were normal! My glucose test was a 2hr /75g glucose test. My fasting value was 5.0 (90) which is great, the 1hr value was 10.8 (194.4) and 2hr value was 9.0 (162) both terrible so definitely impaired glucose tolerance or impaired insulin production happening in there. So there you have it GD! I was really down about this when I found out - and got a little overwhelmed with info overload. But at least now it can be managed to reduce implications for bub. And I'll have more tests for those organs to see if there is some other factor at play. I have no history of diabetes in my family and diet is pretty good. Was in the healthy weight range/BMI prior to pregnancy too! Always been pretty healthy so bit of a shock to need so much medical management now! Just need to remember not to blame myself for this but accept that it happens to some women and manage it. It is likely my birth plan will be restricted. I won't be able to use the active birthing rooms, I'll be monitored much more closely with teams of professionals. Hoping that it will all happen naturally as planned - but with GD it is likely I'll be induced early. And they assure me I will only need a caesarean if bub grows too big - which shouldn't happen with proper management. Bub may also need a few days in the special care unit if its blood sugar levels are too low. I am measuring on date and bubs heart rate was 145bpm which is good. Head is down already but could change a bit in the coming weeks.

  • 28 weeks 6 days - Well, around 4% of pregnant women in Australia are diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. And of that number - 15% of them cannot control their own blood glucose levels through diet and exercise alone. Seems I am one of those special 6 out of 1000 women who get it like this, and diet has nothing to do with it. Seems my placenta is creating way too much of the hormones that are normally created in pregnancy to reduce the mothers insulin, which ensures a higher level of glucose in the blood for baby, except my hormones have gone overboard and I now don't have enough insulin to unlock the glucose from my own blood so my cells can use it for energy and it builds up. So I alternate between low blood sugar - feeling very lethargic and hungry like you do in the morning after a long fast while sleeping before breakfast rectifies it, and high blood sugar which my cells cannot access for energy - so this also makes me feel excessive fatigue, hunger, thirst, mental fog - to the point were I slur my words and cant think anymore (which is funny because this is similar to low blood sugar). I will need daily blood glucose monitoring and insulin injections for the remainder of my pregnancy to bring those levels down and prevent the baby from getting too much nourishment and getting oversized. I am being admitted to hospital on Thursday for more tests on my organs (which I've been experiencing pain from since week 12 and could be connected to GD) as well as commencing insulin treatment. Bummer. But at least I have been diagnosed and can try and do everything I can to ensure bub has no complications from this. Wish me luck for the final stretch!
  • 29 weeks 5 days - I have just been in hospital for 5 days for insulin treatment. My diet was very good prior, but it has been spot on for over 10 days now with a dieticians help, low GI foods, appropriate carbohydrate portions, no sugar etc. I had no Christmas fare at all, didn't go to new years bbq's - because I wanted to monitor everything I ate and am still coming to terms with injecting insulin 4 times a day! I've been monitoring blood glucose etc, but my readings just keep creeping up. They are not incredibly high, but high enough for me to keep having insulin increased every 3 - 4 days. I am coming to terms with the dissapointment of doing everything right but still having no control over it - so it will take some time. The hardest thing has been the regimented nature of monitoring, injecting, eating, and monitoring again. Timing is really important - not to eat too late, not to leave too long between readings, eating straight after injecting and having a snack if I need it, but then allowing enough time for a low pre meal reading. Fortunately I only have 8-10 weeks to go. I really don't want to be induced at 38 weeks as my hospital advocates. Will have a dating/sizing ultrasound in 2 weeks. Hope bub is normal size now! Fingers crossed.
  • Our bubba at nearly 31 weeks- Oh sweet little love!

  • 30 week 4 days - ultrasound. I'm in love, love love!!!! Bubba looked very relaxed and cheeky. Ben swears that it blew us a kiss. Quite amazing when it appears as though it is making eye contact with us! Bubba was in the vertex position, head down, but facing my left hip. So we were able to get some great facial shots.
  • 31 weeks and counting!

31 weeks - Actually the days above are till reaching 37 weeks, with possible induction some time after this date due to GD! The doctors have mentioned a likely induction at 38 weeks. This is even before they know how big my babe is. I can't believe how much medical management is happening now. It seems like overkill to me. I am scheduled for weekly visits from 34 weeks with fetal stress tests performed, but have immediately started on fortnightly ultrasounds for the remainder of the pregnancy. From all the readings I have done on GD, they said there would be an overly zealous treatment protocol put in place and that is exactly what has happened. I guess they want to be safe. I want to go naturally, and will manage my GD meticulously to reduce chances of having a big bub and needing inducement. I wonder how much I'll get to negotiate with the obstetrician on this. So far my diet is holding my glucose levels on a very low dose of insulin. Only time will tell. Getting a sizing ultrasound in one week.
  • 33 weeks - It's been a busy time of appointments. Had a sizing ultrasound last week and have another next Thursday at 34 weeks. At 32 weeks bubba is measuring in the 50th percentile for gestational measurements, and the 34th percentile for ultrasound stats. Bubba's weight estimate was 4 lbs 2 oz which is very healthy and average. This is great news since the excessive medical management I've been having is geared towards the assumption that I will have a big baby because I have GD and will need to be induced at 38 weeks because I am on insulin, but I have been managing my blood glucose fairly meticoulously. Measurements of the Head Circumference (HC), The Abdominal circumference (AC), and the The Biparietal diameter (BFD) put bubba at about 32 and a half weeks, but The Femur length (FL) was about 5 days behind, so it looks like bubba will have my little legs instead of hubbys. I also had a CGT (Fetal Cardiotocography Monitoring) yesterday for the first time. Which measures the Fetal heart rate (FHR) against my uterine contractions. This will happen every week from now on. Bubba was so active that it was difficult to get a baseline reading which is bubbas's heart rate at rest. The fluctuations went for 20 minutes between about 120bpm and 177bpm so I don't know what bubba was doing in there, maybe having a good clean or dance! Other things that this test looks at is for variability of the FHR of greater than 5bpm throughout the tests, and there was certainly that - ranging from 15-20 bpm variability between the big fluctuations, and accelerations around contraction time, which is ok because it is not real labour when there should be an early decelaration, and decelaratons which there were also plenty of, but again nothing to worry about because they lasted for seconds and not for over three minutes. So all looking good for one healthy little munchkin.

CTG (Cardio-tocograph) at 32 and a half weeks

Our Bubba's cheeky face at 31 weeks!

I have just started gaining weight again. I stopped gaining at about week 23 with the onset of the GD, and didn't gain until week 32. But now in the final stretch I should gain healthily till about 2-4 weeks before labour. The baby should put on about half a pound or 227 grams a week from now on. The Braxton Hicks are becoming really nasty! Having them every day at the moment, especially when standing or driving over bumps in the car. And they just roll into each other. Twice this week I have had quite severe period like cramping and had to lay down where it has disappeared after about 30 minutes of rest. The other night I was keeled over the kitchen sink trying to prepare some vegies for tea! Oh the pressure!!
  • 34 weeks - another ultrasound today. This time bub's weight was estimated at 2501 grams or 5 lbs 5 Oz putting it in the 74th percentile (up from the 50th percentile 2 weeks ago) and at only 3 days ahead of the LMP gestational age estimate which is fantastic for a GD bub. I am not worried because there is a large gap for error (15%) with this technology. So we'll just see what each fortnight shows. The most useful thing about these ultrasounds is not the measurements on their own, but the change in growth rates over the remainder of the pregnancy. Measurements of the Head Circumference (HC), The Abdominal circumference (AC), and the The Biparietal diameter (BFD) put bubba at about 34 and a half weeks, but The Femur length (FL) is now about 7 days behind, but nothing to worry about. Bubba is engaged already as I suspected because of the lower pelvic pain I've had with no upper discomfort at all, so this was confirmed with a transvaginal ultrasound. My cervix was assessed and it has thinned fractionally to 3.5cm from 4.7cm, but is still firm and shut at both ends even with bubba's head pressing on it. Labour is more likely to occur when it gets to less than 2.5cm. This is also one of the measurements that is one indication that induction gels might help to ripen it further.

    Bishop Score

to determine induction success / likelihood of spontaneous labour.

    • A score of 5 or less suggests that labour is unlikely to start without induction.
    • Some sources indicate that only a score of 8 or greater is reliably predictive of a successful induction.
    • A low Bishop's score often indicates that induction is unlikely to be successful.
    • A score of 9 or more indicates that labour will most likely commence spontaneously/naturally without induction required.

    Fetal stations in the Pelvis

I'm going to follow the Bishop Score (At right) and get my obstetrician to assess me based on it for when and if to induce. It is so useful - need a score of greater than 8 for a successful induction, and greater than 9 indicates I'll go on my own! At the moment the bub is intermediately positioned, cervix would be firm, effacement is less than 30%, cervix length is greater than 3cm, dilation hasn't started but fetal station is at about more than -3, so at 34 weeks my score would be a 1! The fetal stations are interesting, (picture at right), scientists reckon that first time mothers will commence labouring when the babies head gets to about -1 or 0, so I still have a way to go for that! Don't want them forcing me into it when my cervix is not ready. I found out that my placenta is posterior (at the back upper end of my uterus and bubba is currently sitting on it with its bottom like a cushion. My amniotic fluid level has improved in the last fortnight - now in the 50th percentile for gestation at about 13 cm. Was at 10.8cm, 2 weeks ago and that put me in about the 30th percentile. So the extra water I've been drinking has paid off. The umbilical cord is draped around bubbas neck like a towel, which is worrying because another turn will loop it around that little neck! But they assured me this is very common. My bubba is having hiccups up to four times a day, for between 5 - 10 minutes at a time. Normally after I eat, but not always. My readings on hiccups have taught me two things - 1. Hiccups prior to 37 weeks that last for less than 10 minutes are fine, bub is practise breathing and strengthening the little lungs, also gulping too much of the tasty amniotic fluid. 2. That hiccups that last for longer than 15 minutes is a problem if it happens more than 4 times a day and after 37 weeks it can be an indication of some cord compression for some reason. So would need to be checked out if that was the case. These kind of hiccups would also be accompanied with erratic frantic movement, and an erratic or dropping Fetal Heart rate. None of this information alarms me. Knowledge is such a powerful thing.

  • 34 weeks 5 days - Had an appointment with the obstetrician today! He said that he will let me go all the way to 40 weeks because my glucose numbers have been excellent and my baby is perfectly sized for gestation. He reached that conclusion by palpating my abdomen and feeling the bubs size and position of head. Bub is in the Right Occipit Posterier (ROP) position at the moment , facing my left hip. He said that bub's head was at 3/5th's above the brim. See diagram above for explanations. Which means that if bubs head is 5 fingers wide from jaw line to top of head, three finger widths of the head is still above my symphysis pubis, and two have already dropped into my pelvis - referred to as relation to brim. Once bubs head gets to only 2/5th's above it means the head is fully engaged in the pelvis, and 0/5th's above means none of the head is above the pelvic brim and can be palpated because babies head is actually coming out. Measuring fifths is more accurate than internal exams because they can show the babies head moulding - and this is a distortion of the skull length when the pelvis is tight and there will be trouble fitting it through, so sometimes practitioners can mistake skull moulding for further progress if they don't measure the fifths as above the pelvic brim as well. As well as moulding, another issue can be that bubs head protrudes above the mothers pubis symphysis instead of sitting flush. This can also indicate Cephalic disproportion or CPD of the head can spell trouble. So at 3/5th's above the brim I am not far from being fully engaged which explains the pressure and frequent urination, stabbing sensations and constant braxton hicks. My cervix still needs to shorten another centimetre to really get things going, to below at least 2 cm's to ensure success with induction methods. This shortening should happen in the coming weeks. He also recommended lots of sex to try to go on my own and avoid an induction. Hubby will be very happy with that recommendation! That is what got me into this mess, but I guess it is good to try rather than wait for the synthetic prostoglandin gels made from animal semen! I will also try walking as I think gravity is what has been bringing on more intense braxton hicks contractions and discomfort, so I assume these are helping to move it all downwards. Not sure about all the others measures I've read. Nipple stimulation doesn't really appeal to me, and evening primrose oil, castor oil, black and blue cohosh, and red raspberry leaves seem a bit short of empirical evidence, but that doesn't mean they don't work! There is also discussion about spicy food and consuming lots of pineapple both of which I like, but doing the later hard when you are monitoring blood glucose and eating low GI. The obstetrician assured me that he will measure me against the 'Bishop Score' before deciding to induce or not so that is great news! Today's CTG was normal with bub having a good baseline rate between 120 and 140 bpm, nice variability and some accelerations. One contraction was picked up in the CTG of moderate strength. The midwife noted on the printout that I had a small amount of pain when that happened. I asked what level real labour contractions get to in this test, and she said 100 and 120. Mine got to 80, so I'm on my way to feeling what it might be like. (Only with a lot more pain when the real ones occur). (I'm not sure of the units of measurements for uterine contractions, will find out.) My hubby is so excited now, reading my pregnancy books and checking with me to see that I know things. He is so cute! And I feel like a kid in junior school counting down the days to Christmas or my first ever overseas trip, except the anticipation is ten times greater than those events! I am probably more obsessed about this special event as I was about our wedding! We are starting to improve our home and get the room ready for bub as well. All on track!

  • 35 weeks 2 days - Today I researched the use of a Partograph in labour. It is fascinating. It records how the mothers cervix is dilating, how the babies head is descending through her pelvis, details of her contractions and times. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has set the transition from 'Latent/Early labor phase' to the 'Active labour phase' when the cervix is dilated to 4cm. This means that once the cervix is there, it is presumed that in real labour 90% of mothers cervixes will dilate at a rate of 1cm an hour and they wont cross the Alert line. Ten percent cross the Alert line which tells practioners when to be especially careful about their decisions. If nothing more happens after another 4 hours then they cross the Action line. This line tells practioners they must intervene and do something. Only 3 out of 100 mothers don't progress enough in labour and cross the action line. Action normally means an oxytocin drip or emergency caeserean. Studies show that about 30% of primigravidas cross the Alert line and only 10% of multiprimas cross it.

  • 36 weeks 1 day - Another ultrasound today and they estimated bub to be at 6 lbs 3 Oz (2874 grams), which puts bubs about a week ahead for average weight estimates which has been the same since week 19 and the amniotic fluid index (AFI) was at 12cm which is still fine. I'm sorry to say that I don't have much faith in these ultrasounds as today's technician measured our bubs head at the size they said it was 3 weeks ago! So either these ultrasounds are frought with error or my babies head is going down like a balloon! Last week the obstetrician said bubba was perfect size on palpation, and told me not to worry too much about the ultrasound stats. Since he has been delivering babies for over 35 years in our town I trust his expertise. I am over all of the visits to the hospital, I just can't wait for the big day. Still don't know how long they will let me go - definately not longer than 40 weeks but it would be so nice to have a date! I wanted to go as close to 40 weeks as possible for bub, but I don't know If I can bare it! Will find out next Wednesday if I can have an induction date booked. Pelvic pain is unbearable at times. I can't lift my legs to put my underpants on as there is too much groin pain - Symphisis Pubis disorder (SPD) I believe. I also the occasional nerve pain shooting through the buttocks - I think that is the pressure on my sacrum illiac joint. It feels like my ovaries are being squashed and the Braxton Hicks are ridiculous at times. I have had about 30 in three hours tonight. And I keep getting this tender / swollen / irritated sensation coming from the cervix/bladder area which I think is from the constant direct pressure. On apositive note I have had no rib pain or high kicking, or breathlessness, indigestion or heartburn which are common at this stage, so perhaps my bub has just been low the whole time. My cervix is shortening/effacing very slowly - they look at it in the ultrasounds, and I have so far gone from 49mm at 19 weeks to 36mm at 34 weeks, to 30mm today - so it's on the move at least! It also looked like it was funneling slightly at bubs end by about 1cm, so thats a start. But pretty closed still. I am maintaining my blood sugars on a low dose of insulin, but couldn't do that without the insulin. I pray that this GD goes when bub arrives! Injecting 4 times a day and monitoring sugars for 7 times a day is starting to wear pretty thin on me! I am so ready now. Better pack my bags tommorrow. The countdown is on!

  • 36 weeks 3 days - bubba is very responsive to my night time sleeping position and keeps turning from side to side with me so that gravity puts bubs spine closer to the bed because of its shape and weight. I can tell where bubs spine is because of the firmness and the hiccups that keep switching each day from my left to right lower belly. Must be making his or herself dizzy in there switching from side to side. Hopefully bub is not doing some full circle work or that cord is going to be around that little neck! Bubba is in the cephalic (head down) position, but alternates between LOP and ROP (left or right occiput posterier) . The occiput is the bony part at the back of the skull, and in labour this should turn to face my pube so that bub is delivered in the anterior position facing my perineum. Posterier labours (face up) are very difficult and take a lot longer because bub has to work the anterior turn into he whole process, or if bub cant turn anterier the diameter of the head being stretched back is greater as it tries to move through the pelvis.. So I have started looking at Optimal fetal positioning (OFP) techniques to get this little blighter to turn face down. I also read that it is easier for them to turn anterior ( face down) from the LOP (facing my right hip, than ROP facing my left hip, must be the shape of my organs that restrict the right side. So some OFP techiques I am trying are sitting forward rather than slouching on the sofa, sitting with good posture with knees below the pelvis, sitting backwards on a dining room chair and leaning into the back of the chair with legs lowered, swivelling my hips on my fit ball, really anything that encourages bubs spine to fall in the curvature of my hanging belly. So we'll see what position eventuates in the coming weeks. It really makes a difference though, I can get bub to the LOP position if I sleep the whole night on my left side. Now just have to get bub into the anterior position and hay presto well be ready to descend through that pelvis. Mild swelling in my ankles and increasing blood pressure means more frequent visits now.

  • 36 weeks 7 days - I was negative for Group B Strep, and still don't have any positive antibodies in my blood. - Yippee! Finally some good news. Maybe that means my bub has the same negative blood type as me. Or perhaps it is just that there has not been any exchange between us yet, so no doubt I'll get another preventative Rhogam injection at birth. My bub is at -2 station so nearly engaged, The obstetrician said that he thought it was on the final descent now! So no more bouncing! Bubba is facing sideways (laterally) (ROL - Right Occiput Lateral) which isn't far from the final turn to anterior (ROA - face down) to get the right part/diametre of the skull through that pelvis! My bub turns from side to side each day. Bub can't make up its mind which way to make the final journey. And it could still all change to a difficult birthing postion, but looking good at this stage. I found an awesome study last night that has some correlatation between bub's presentation (into the pelvis) left or right with whether a baby will be left or right handed. Bubbas that like to lay LOL or LOP (head down with their spines facing mums left hip are more likely to have preference for using the right hand at 19 weeks of age, and bubbas that are ROL or ROP were more likely to be lefties at 19 weeks of age. Interestingly in this study more girls laid LOP/LOL and more boys laid ROP/ROL. I wonder if my bub will be a lefty or righty? I went to pick up the car baby capsule today. Tommorrow I am finally going to pack that hospital bag. I have been procrastinating on this for a while, and to make matters worse we are half way through painting the nursery and our master bedroom. If it happened now the house would be a mess. So I'm eagerly waiting for that supposed nesting instinct to kick in.

  • 37 weeks 1 day - Reading the 'you are considered full - term now' on the 37 weeks page are such sweet words. I thought this time would never arrive. Been checking the site weekly and sometimes daily since week 7! I have insulin dependant GD, and had it drummed into me that I was high risk and would be induced at 38 weeks. I had a little bit of grief, saying goodbye to the natural minimally intervened pregnancy and birth I wanted. For a lot of my profession I have spent long periods leading people in the bush with minimal equipment, living really simply, studying Australian indigenous ways of living. Very free, Just living the experience. Always thought I never needed much help with things. Never went to the doctors, been pretty healthy. But since 26 weeks I've been to hospital nearly 3 times a week for this and that. Diet control, blood glucose monitoring 7 times a day, injecting insulin 4 times a day, tests, ultrasounds, recording a food diary, palpations for fetal growth, NST's/CTG's, unterine contractions strength, fetal heart rates, urine analysis everyday for presence of glucose, ketones and protein, swabs, blood tests. All very scientific, measured quantified and ordered. It has run my life. This fed a need in me to research 'the science' of pregnancy and birth. It has been fascinating. But I can't help feeling like it has all been taken out of my hands. So a week from the 'medically necessary' induction date at 38 weeks, they say everything is great and you'll be going to at least 40 weeks. And I'm a little dissapointed for me but happy for bub. We are blessed to have the medical knowledge and facilities we have in Western modern times. But I do wish I was in control of my pregnancy and my body. I feel like I have lost touch with something that should be so natural - lost confidence with my role in the the whole process. Wish that baby would decide what the right time was, and go to that point whether that is 38 or 42 weeks.. Will I know what to do in labour based on how I feel? Or will I have doctors, tests, and drugs making me do it? Will I have the science of it playing over and over in my mind? Have the knowledge and fear interfering with the natural hormone production that should be working for me? I am already thinking about how I'd like my second pregnancy to be. Data and test free and relaxed at home! Knoweldge is powerful, but it also takes so much away from the actual experience of just being able to feel ones way through pregnancy and birth as women all over the world still do in countries that dont have access to medical care - giving birth under a tree in a field, in a dimly lit hut,. My friends think I am crazy for feeling like this. A little philosophical today, I know.

  • 37 weeks 5 days - Had a doctors appointment this morning and monitoring. The CTG, BP, and urine are all normal and swelling in ankles is gone too!. Today's doctor was great. She said we better get a move on as I'm almost 38 weeks. This has contradicted information from my last two appointments. So on Thursday after my ultrasound appointment I will have my first review and assessment which includes a vaginal exam and an induction will be booked pending these results for either next week or earlier (over the weekend) if there are any issues. Hubby and I are so relieved to finally have some notice either way about something happening. Looks like bub might just make it to nearly 39 weeks! I wonder what bubs weight estimate will be on Thursday? I wonder what the induction path will be like? Prostin gel? Ruptured membranes? Syntocin (Oxytocin) drip? A strange calm has come over me with this news, as I sit in my messy house with so much still to do. We almost have finished the nursery, except last night the light fitting fell from the ceiling so now we need an electrician - as if to say - no you are not ready yet. It would be really funny if I went into labour on my own before the induction! Either way it is going to happen! , Hospital bags check, birth plan check, baby names list check, people notification list check, list on what to do as a parent after the birth - no idea about that one. Better start shifting my mindset from pregnant lady to mother and parent.

  • 38 weeks - 1 day - Intense frontal contractions this morning and a desire for frequent bowel movements! The pain is like intense stitches right across the front of my lower belly and was difficult to seperate them as the belly remained as tight as a bowling ball for pretty much the whole time. I estimated the break between them at about 4 minutes. Could be more serious Braxtons, or early labour. Pretty painful - so I wonder what real labour will be like for me. These lasted all together for 4 hours. How exciting! Hubby and I went and had our 38 week ultrasound and the news was fantastic - growth measurements are all normal which is a relief for a GD mum! Currently estimated at 3283 grams (or 7 lbs 3 oz, and growth pattern has been about 200 grams a fortnight for the last month, so the final fortnight should see an additional 200 grams at 40 weeks, making bub - drum roll please......................... about 3662 grams at birth or 8 lbs 1 oz. Of course - these estimates can be out by as much as one and a half pounds or between 6.5lbs and 9.5lbs - what a frightening variance) So I won't know until I push bub out what the end product is. I do feel though, that if my GD had no been picked up and managed with diet and insulin that I could be having a much bigger baby! My dad was nearly eleven pounds so big babies are in my genes on one side. Bubba is currently in the LOL position (left occiput lateral position - facing my right hip) and this is the most common presentation in the final stages of pregnancy. The umbilcal cord looks like it is fully around the neck - the ultrasound today showed the cord blood flow pulsating around bub's neck, but it was dfifficult to see if it had looped or whether it just circled once. There is no point getting alarmed about this as there is nothing that can be done except monitoring and that shows no fetal stress. Today's CTG showed some awesome contractions at full strength coming at every 5-6 minutes. But I had no pain with these compared to this mornings ones. Bubba's heart rate was at about 135bpm, a nice baseline with good variability after I drank some chilled water. The heart rate increased a minute or two before each contraction - as though bubba can sense before they happen. My awesome midwife and resident had spoken to my obstetrician and hospital registrar, and they will let me plod along for another two weeks, happy with my management of the GD and insulin. The plan keep changing! So I get to see if my body does the work before a scheduled induction near my due date. My mother is coming from the other side of Australia this weekend - a little early, but no doubt she will get me moving until I go into labour in the deli section of our local supermarket! Better carry that jar of pickles in my bag to drop - just in case the waters break in public! A little more nesting time for me. Everything is looking great!

Hubby admiring our handywork in our nursery

Can't believe we finished before bub arrived!

  • Later the same night - Ha ha - It's night time here in Southern Australia at the bottom of the world and my painful contractions from this morning are back. Estimated at between 10 to 5 minutes apart, but my uterus is so tight and sore it is hard to time the length of each. I know when they start but don't know when they end! It's been happening for over 3 hours. Hope this is actually doing something and doesn't go on for weeks. Pretty painful! I'm like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory searchng for that golden ticket, every time I take a wee. Will there be something?????? No mucus plug or discharge for me yet. (if before labour at all) Bring it on I say - want to beat that induction date on the 11th March, which is also my wedding anniversary!

At right: Finally finished our nursery!! Phewwwww!!

  • 38 weeks 5 days - an ouch ouch ouch vaginal exam including a cervix stretch, OMG. Torture torture torture!!!!! I nearly hit the roof of the office. There must be a better way than this! If I can't handle the pain of this what on earth is labour going to be like? If this doesn't get things moving - then induction is scheduled to started Monday afternoon, 3 days short of 40 weeks not bad fora GD mum. This might mean a wedding anniversay baby. How funny is that! Hopefully my hubby will now never have a reason to forget our wedding anniversary. The doc said cervix was soft, but still at 3cm long and not dilated. A good place to be for a first timer, and induction likely to be successful. Imagine if bub came before it? That would be super. Swelling in legs and ankles is hideous! Will I ever be able to fit into my shoes again?

  • 38 weeks 6 days - I saw the 'blob of snot' today! 24 hours after the cervix stretch! Slightly brownish, small tiinge of pink and then clear. I heard that it can be clear, yellow, orange, pink, brown or green! Hardly the colours of the rainbow! Could be the plug or part of it. How exciting. Minor cramps again in lower abdomen, severe braxton hicks at night that tell me the bladder needs emptying. Bowel movements more frequent. Swelling is up again - today it is in the hands for the first time. Seeing all of the babies being born to women on ths site that I have shared the journey with since week 7 when I joined is quite surreal. Soon I will be looking at my own little cherub!

  • 39 weeks - More of the 'blob of snot' today! Mmmmmmm, just delightful! Never been so excited to see this kind of stuff in my undies! No cramps today, just continued Braxtons that have become such a part of my day and night that I might actually miss them when it is all over! Wish my abdominal muscles could flex like that! Had a few of those terrible stab stab nerve pains in the cervix area too! Another appointment in the morning for fetal monitoring - and induction to commence on Monday in less than 4 days!! So So excited!!!. My mum is here now, and of course we cannot stop talking about everything pregnancy, birth and baby related! Tonight she tried the old wives tale with the needle and thread dangling over my tummy. Three times it spun in circles indicating a girl. She did it on hubby and it did not spin around or rock from side to side. Fascinating! I don't believe in those tales but that was quite freaky!

  • 39 weeks 4 days - dear friends, our little love, Avery Joseph came into our world at 1.09am on Tuesday the 11th of March - our wedding anniversay, gd insulin mum bub weighed 7.14lb (3240grams), 3 days short of 40 weeks! Went in as first timer for the prostin gel with an almost closed cervix still at 2cm long/effaced, thinking it would take a day or two, had the gel, sent hubby home for the night and within two hours was on a painful contractions roll that would send me to the floor to cope and I had him 3 hours later. So from 1cm to 10cm in 3 hours, hubby missed the first 2 hours of active labour at home, then when he arrived I had 1 hour of intense pressure and pleads for pain meds, but was told not long, and then 9 minutes pushing! Birthed on a matress on floor. Unbelievable. Birth story on Avery's own page. Hospital stay for 2 days as had some issues with breast attachment. Home now. Coming to terms with mummying and breastfeeding. But have posted some picks in my photo album. When I look at him I think my life has really only just begun, Enjoy your pregnancy journey! Ciao bellas.

      My wonderful pregnancy symptoms

    • (5 & a half weeks) Bloatedness, tender breasts, missed period
    • mild period like cramps in early days.
    • sensational appetite till 6 weeks.
    • Somewhat emotional between 6 - 8 weeks.
    • Fatigue, with naps required around 3 in afternoon. In bed at 9pm which is highly unusual.
    • Constant nausea from 6 - 14 weeks. (cooking smells and coffee are out of bounds) Sometimes it can be controlled by eating, but only for 20 minutes then it is back!
    • Heightened sense of smell - can smell someone smoking from one hundred metres and loathe it!
    • Lots of dry reaching at least expected times.
    • Daily vomiting that occurs at any time of day, but normally only once. Sickness would actually wake me up and force me to run to the loo.
    • Round ligament pain from 8 - 15 weeks.
    • Oh my god up 5 times a night or the toilet!
    • Skin pigment changes, freckles and spots darkening on body and face.
    • 1.6kg weight gained in first trimester
    • 12 weeks tenderness below right rib.
    • Waking at ridiculously early hours and then being unable to get back to sleep.
    • 15 weeks - little gassy pains that could be baby moving but unsure.
    • Ligaments loosened further and lots of pelvic and spinal clunking.
    • Oh my back!!!!! Will it ever be the same?
    • Headaches that last for 2 days twice a week.
    • Heaviness in the abdomen when standing up from sitting.
    • 18 weeks 6 days - little movements when I am sleeping (i think)
    • 22 weeks - stomach discomfort when eating and faint stretchmarks appearing at the base of the belly. So much for rubbing in all that lotion. I guess my genes won out. Not fair! Felt Braxton Hicks contractions for the first time this week. Weird!
    • 26 weeks - stretch marks pretty obvious now from the hips to the pubic line. Weight gain has slowed down over the last 3 weeks thankfully!
    • 27-28 weeks - some episodes of feeling faint and having to sit down. Increasing heart palpitations. Also incredible fatigue after eating as the blood goes to my stomach, blood pressure drops and then the heart races to regulate it all.
    • 30 weeks - Braxton Hicks contractions are every day now. Yesterday I had about 4 in one hour!
    • 32 weeks - Braxton Hicks intensifying with bouts of period like cramps that disappear with laying down. The pressure is a little disconcerting. I feel like I'm going to leave my uterus somewhere if I move too quick or change direction!
    • 33 weeks Oh the pressure in that pelvis - little jab jab stab stab pains in the cervix, ovaries and rectal area. With occasional sciatica troubles.
    • 35 weeks - I don't trust my pelvis to hold the weight of me anymore! It has loosened so much it is like seperate pieces of jigsaw! When sleeping I have to carefully lift the pelvis and place it to the right or left sleeping side. If I happen to lay on my back I hear an almighty clunk and then get nerve pain shooting through my right buttock - a bit like a painful lightening bolt and this makes me scared to move at all. This pelvis is patricularly problematic when getting up and walking, I'm finding it hard to put weight on the right leg until about the 6th step and then it is all fine. It is as I would image to have a broken pelvis (except with less pain) Occasionally when sleeping, I will also have the beginnings of a calf cramp, but I am able to stretch it out and prevent it from taking hold by flexing the hell downward. Oh joy! Still getting immense pressure down low, and lots of litte hand movements near my pubic line.
    • 36 weeks 3 days - mild swelling in ankles - more prominent in the left than right ankle. My blood pressure is beginning to creep (pregnancy induced hypertension). Normally sits between 110 and 120 over 70 to 80. But I've had two readings tis week at 125 over 95. So watching it closely have been told to rest and to ring maternity if I experience headaches, swelling (odema), nausea, stomach pain or see stars - these being the symptoms of pre-eclampsia. They will continue to test for protein in the urine. Though this is clear at the moment.
    • 37 weeks 3 days - severe cramping while out shopping that came every minute and lasted for about 5 seconds at a time - for about half an hour total. Relief only by stopping the walking and bending over. Not the usual Braxton Hicks that have been coming a lot more often andwaking me at night, but a new type of cramp. Sharp and stitch like at the base of the stomach and, pubic area. Also increasing Leukorrhea discharge. Occasional nerve pains in the cervix, vagina and rectal area. Oh joy. There really is a baby in there that has to get out somehow!
    • 37 weeks 5 days - a strange calm about the impending B'day.
    • 38 weeks 1 day - intense stitch like cramping across the lower abdomen, contractions every 5 minutes and frequent bowel movements. Yippee! (Though this could go on for weeks yet!)
    • 39 weeks - loss of mucous plug over four days , softening bowel motions becoming more frequent, short periods of intense braxtons,

Welcome to my page from around the world!
