Friday, 20 June Hi Maliah,
I too had my bloods done at 15wks and risk of downs came back at 1/8800 but I had high raised AFP levels. Im 25 and have a healthy 18month old son. They did a detailed scan and everything looked normal and they told me they were happy with the baby. I have not been offered an amnio. I go back for my 20 week scan on thursday. I feel relieved but still there is that doubt of not knowing for sure if my baby is ok. Im really pleased you had great results. keep me informed of your progress. all the best x Mercer -

Saturday, 14 June I'm not going to do that test next time around either! Let me know when you get your results. Best of luck! Mercer -
Thursday, 12 June oh and I meant to say after the ultrasound my chances of downs went down. He said after that they were anywhere from 1/200 - 1/800 because ultrasounds didn't always pick up markers so he didn't know for sure. Did they give you another number after the ultrasound? Mercer -
Thursday, 12 June They did do an ultrasound for the amnio but didn't really do a whole lot of measurements in that one because we had had a level II ultrasound a couple of weeks before (right after we got the quad screen results back... we waited a couple of weeks to actually get the amnio- I almost didn't get one). But in our level II they said there were no markers for downs and that she was measuring right where she should be. So when we went in for the amnio they did the ultra sound to guide the needle.
My ration after the quad screen was a 1/81 chance because my HCG levels were 4 times normal and my AFP levels were a little below normal and my inhibin A levels were 2 times normal. I was totally freaked out and of course I asked what were some of the other reasons that these levels might be high. Our perinatologist (we went to a specialist) said that usually the only reason they would be high is if there were 2 fetuses. So again I was super worried because we knew for sure that we only had one baby in there. Like I said though, a couple of days after I got the quad screen and the level II done, after I was done crying, I decided that I really felt like she was ok in my heart and I honestly kind of didn't think about it for a while. Then my husband and I decided to have the amnio because we knew even if she did have downs we would keep her but that we wanted to be prepared. So we had that done and I started to worry again about the risks of the amnio. Thank god, everything went well with that and we spent the next week waiting. I tried really hard just to keep my mind off of it but it's hard. Then exactly one week later I got a call at work from my perinatologist's office and they said everything was completely normal and that it was definitely a girl!!! I was SOOOO happy I cried. I called my husband right away : )
Anyway, they didn't really offer any explanations about why they thought my levels were high over the phone. We ended up having another level II ultrasound about a month later so the doctor could look at her heart because my youngest brother in law was born with a hole in his heart and they thought it might increase our risks a littler. During that ultrasound I noticed that my placenta looked pretty big and I said something about it. The doctor said a big placenta was fine and that a big placenta can sometimes be the reason for the high levels of HCG and other hormones that are picked up in the quad screen test.
I do know that these false positive quad screens happen to A LOT of women. And I think it's kind of scary because so many women go through a lot of angst and worry only to find out that everything is fine. I'm sorry this is SO long! If you have any more questions or anything PLEASE feel free to write me again. It's no problem at all. Like I said, I wouldn't have made it through without support from people on this site.
When are you supposed to get your results back? lish86 -
