Hi .. please read my blogs for more details!!! I have just started writing them.

4/19/08

hi all, I had my repeat scan yesterday. My previous scan was at 20 weeks but they called me again to take a closer look at my baby's heart. I was freaked out but I got a lot of supportive messages from you all. Apparently there were two issues, 1. They could not see ventricular outflow tract 2. They noticed an echogenic focus (bright spot) in baby's Left Ventricle. This week the radiologists were able to visualize the LVOT so that was good news but the echogenic focus was still there :-(. It is usually a marker for DS if it seen along with some other markers. In our case since this was the only marker and my other tests were negative doctor said that the probability is too low. I wish this spot weren't there but when something like this happens you seem to appreciate life all the more. I was getting used to taking things for granted. I will try to think happy thoughts and will pray that my baby will be healthy. I pray the same for you all :-).

Thanks so much for your kind comments regarding the issue of my baby's U/S scan. We are schedule for a repeat scan next week. Your kind words, comments and prayers have helped me think positive. I was very upset but you all are great :). I am hoping for the best. I will keep you posted with my next scan results. I received 50+ messages and I am so glad to have such great people to help. I could not reply to each message individually,, so I am blogging this. Thanks so much!!!!

I have times of baby being down really low and then he seems to move again taking the pressure off. It is normal for this to happen at this stage.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago and I was put on macrobid (1 tablet twice daily for 7 days) by the 6th day of medication the Dr's office called back and said they thought I may have been passing a kidney stone due to there being blood in my urine. It took 3 times of running my urine before they called me back to tell me that. The Dr's would never put you on something that would harm you or the baby so I wouldnt worry

hey iv had the same problems,in my last pregnancy i got loads of uti's and was put on all type of antibiotics
and my daughter turned out fine she is 6 years old now and very healthy
this time iv had uti's again and some antibiotics dont work and it ends up a severe kidney infection
and the risks of the infection is way worse than the antibiotics,im sure the docs know what they are doing and i would keep taking the meds, coz you dont wana risk getting too sick, plus when they get the cultures back he can then change the meds if the ones he gave are not sensitive to the bacteria, but i wouldnt leave it without taking the meds iv seen the worst it can get, they thought i was gonna slip into a colma due to the high tem and dehydration coz of the infection, and because i was at such a dangerous level and they dont want me to get that bad again as its would stress the baby out they have decided to give me antibiotics untill the baby is born and have to go for more check ups, even tho the meds i am on arent suppossed to be taken while pregnant it is a less risk than the infection .so to be honest your best bet is to take the meds and see what the doc says about the cultures hope this is usefull info for you take care and i hope you get better soon x

I currently have a UTI and this is my second time. I am taking Nitrofurantoin Mono/Macro. This is also the same medication that I took last time and it worked with no problems. I hope the best for you and your recovery.

BradysMama - Friday, 25 April
I had a UTI and my family doc put me on some antibiotic that sounds similar to what you are on. So I called my OB/GYN and she said it was fine since I was in the second trimester but she switched it for me anyway because I was freaked out about it. So you might want to ask and get it switched. Hope that helps!

mommy2S - Friday, 25 April
I have always been prescribed Macrobid and told it's safe if you pop up pregnant.

apreece - Friday, 25 April
I'm a nurse and I would not feel comfortable taking Bactrim. It is Pregnancy Category C which means that it should only be taken if the benefits outweigh the risks. You should be taking something that is Pregnancy Category A or B. They are safe. When you look meds up on the internet, search what Pregnancy Category it is. I wouldn't take anything that is Category C, D, or X. My book says not to take if your pregnancy is at term or if you are lactating. I hope this helps.

Ann-n-Sean - Friday, 25 April
Hey!!! I wouldnt worry to much about the antibiotics if your doc said it was ok. I dont think your doctor would give you anything that would be harmful to you r your baby. But, I'm not sure if she warned you that most UTI medications cause yeast infections!!! And those suck even worse than UTI's!!! *lol* I would probably look into that, or ask your doc about that. Man, men just dont know how lucky they have it!!! *lol* Good Luck with everything!!!

I've taken bactrim, K-flex (cephalexin), and a Z-pack for my uti's while pregnant. keep in mind, and lot of the warnings they put on meds, they HAVE to put on. For example, if someone took that med while pregnant, something was wrong with the baby, even if it may not have had anything to do with the meds, it still has to have that warning. That way they can't be held responsible for the dr's action of putting you on it.

babybarbados - Friday, 25 April
in my first weeks of pregnancy my doc put me on Macrobid for a UTI. I hope you feel better soon.

jekajoy - Friday, 25 April
When I had a UTI they put me on Macrobid which is safe until the last month of pregnancy. I think it depends on what type of bacteria it is, but they didn't do a culture on mine, just put me on the antibiotic and it cleared up quickly. Here are two websites about this drug...

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a682291.html

http://www.drugs.com/mtm/macrobid.html

Here's the info I found on Bactrim which seemed a little more risky, see what you think...

http://www.drugs.com/cdi/bactrim.html

Good luck!

Hi, you can measure your uterus by lying on your back with a couple of pillows under your head so your not flat, then as your 22 weeks with the side of your hand press gently down around your belly button, maybe a bit higher? you should feel like a grapefruit sized uterus. the top is called your fundus. take your tape measure and place the start of it here at te top of the fundus.
Then measure straight down to your pubic bone. holding both ends not too toght or loose. I prefer to turn the tape measure over so i cant see it so im not cheating!!!!
here in the uk though we dont tend to measure until at least 26 weeks as they tend not to be too accurate until after this point, but shoudl stil be measuring around 22 cms for 22 weeks.
The measurements then are at 1cm per week. dont get too hung up on it though if baby is lying in a funny position it can be smaller and like wise if hes sticking his bum out, bigger!!!!
hope this helps.

apreece - Friday, 4 April
Hello, you can measure yourself. just lay flat so your tummy is stretched out. Put the bottom of your tape measure at the top of your pelvic area (around the top of your hair line) and feel just above your belly button. The top of your uterus should feel harder than the area above it. You should measure in centimeters. Your measurements should equal out to how many weeks you are. Ex. 22 weeks=22 cm Your measurement should not vary more than 1-2 cm. Hope this helps.

Hey! My sis had the same thing, baby moving around so much, some of the scans kept coming out dark and or cloudy or blocked by an arm lol, so she had to go back and just do some measurements again. She is now 39 1/2 weeks and doing perfect :)

skyedakotah - Friday, 21 Mar
Sometimes they have you come back when the baby is moving around too much since they need lots of different angles of the heart. Good luck & try not to worry because it is way more likely that everything is fine vs the other way around :o)

ling1 - Friday, 21 Mar
same thing happened. They had to re-check b/c they saw an echogenic focus in the heart. but it went away by the time we had our second ultrasound. Look up Echogenic focus in google to see what it is. Most of the time, it goes away. keep your head up and congrats on your pregnancy.

Deveney - Friday, 21 Mar
i also have to go back for another ultrasound because the doctor didn't see everything she wanted to with the heart at the 20 week scan. i'll be scheduling that on the 31st for a week or two out. i'm not worried, i'm actually happy to be able to see my little man again! everything will be fine:-)

donnamarie - Friday, 21 Mar
I agree with innalynn, they do second check ups sometimes when the images arent as clear as they would like. they like to be 100 % sure they can see the heart :) my doc spent forever on our boys, gosh , but finally we got a good shot, its just he moved so much that made it hard :(

firstandexcited - Friday, 21 Mar
This happened to me. My doctor sent me to get a level 1 ultrasound to check the 'fetal growth'. Basically it was a clever way to check to see if my baby was a boy or a girl and have it covered under insurance. While doing the ultrasound, the doctors could not see all the chambers of my baby's heart. You are supposed to have 4 chambers, doctors could only see two. So I had to have a level 2 ultrasound done like 3-4 weeks later to make sure there weren't any problems. And there wasn't. Doctors said that it could have been the way she was positioned, or that they were not fully formed yet.

I do understand the stress you are feeling. Try not to worry too much about it, because there may be nothing wrong at all. Doctors may just want to check again before they give someone an 'all is okay' this way it saves themselves from malpractice lawsuits! If you need anything, please let me know! Hope all turns out okay

yari - Friday, 21 Mar
I won't say don't worry, cause that is a given, but be reassured that they do want to do a follow up. To the other comments, they need a specialist to come in and take a look, and a special doctors that specialize in newborn hearts, not just the general Obstetrician. When I had my son at 30 weeks I learned every part of the body has a specialist to it!! I am going thru something with my child with Sickle Cell. My daughter is a carrier, no big deal but apparently something came back with this test to suggest I may be a carrier, so my husband and I both had to go get tested, this would greatly increase the baby having full Sickle Cell disease =(. Haven't heard so I take it as good news. Stay informed, write down any questions you may have to repeat during the procedure that way you don't get confused or forget what you wanted to know. That goes for anything. Good luck!

jeanette2908 - Friday, 21 Mar
Exact same thing happened to me. They told me that they didn't 'see' the heart how they wanted to. So they scheduled another sono to focus on the 4 chambers of the heart. Everythings perfect though. Doc said that sometimes its just the position of the baby that doesn't allow them to see it the way they want to. Good Luck, Im sure everythings ok. I understand your worries, its an ugly feeling.

ellasmom - Friday, 21 Mar
They usually just didn't get to see everything that they needed to. HOnestly, sometimes the scan techs aren't patient enough to keep trying to see the parts they are looking for. I had to have 2 extra ultrasounds with this pregnancy. One at a specialist 70 miles from home. I was scared too.....but little man is fine. I worried for nothing. SO---don't worry about it. I think you will be just fine. And if by chance there is something wrong with the baby, you will know ahead of time and they can be ready to fix any problems right after the baby is born. THat would be a blessing too....:-)

babyboysmama - Friday, 21 Mar
I had to go in for a second ultrasound to look specifically at the heart. They had a special prenatal cardiologist come in. I was really nervous of course, plus he had two 'student' doctors with him and they kept talking 'doctor terms', but turned out my baby boys heart was perfectly formed. I pray all goes well for you.
