Thanks so much for the advice on reflux! My doctor had said not to give him cereal...did your doctor say it was okay, or did you do it on your own? I'm thinking about just doing it....it took the doctor this long to diagnose it at this rate my child won't be on solids for another 18 years. :)

Embry - Saturday, 30 August
Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I am finally enjoying breast feeding. I did not think I was going to make it but after the first week to ten days I turned a corner and I think I will make it. It was nice to hear that other people had felt the same way I had! I have not used the nipple shields yet but they have been recommended to me. Do they sell them at places like Babies R Us?

I looked on the container and it has milk solids in the ingredients and it is the first ingredient but most things including formula have that... Not sure if that would affect bub or not. If you do find it get the Vanilla flabour, add a banana and a tablespoon of honey and some ice and it tastes like a banana smoothie.. yum On its own it is pretty gross. You make it up with water.

ozbaby - Thursday, 28 August
Also it is a powdered formula and you mix it with milk or water but it is nicer with water and some ice.

I am in Australia and we buy it from the chemist. I looked on the container and it is made in Australia and New Zealand but i am sure there would be a similar product over there. You can look it up here : www.sustagen.com.au
It has protein, carbohydrates, 24 vitamins and minerals and fibre. My Dr said it will give me what i need to producce good milk and all breastfeeding mothers should be drinking it ( or something similar)
I hope you find it over there. y

Hi, My daughter was on Zantac first, then went to metoclopramide (way too many possible side effects), then she went on to omeprazole and she is now on Prevacid, the prevacid seems to be working pretty good. The only problem is she always wants to eat right when she wakes in the morning but you have to give them the meds and wait 30 minutes to feed. Also, try 1 teaspoon per ounce of formula it really helps keep it down.
I really hate the fact that I had to stop breastfeeding, between the reflux and she also has a milk protein allergy and I had a hard time figuring out what else in my diet was bothering her, we had to switch to similac alimentum.
Also, Do all the stuff that is recommended in the books like keeping them upright for 45 minutes after eating, putting their crib on a slight incline and burping frequently. It took a while to make things better but slowly everything has made a difference.

Good luck! I hope things get better for you and your little one.

When I give Olivia the meds (I bottle feed) I put the bottle in her mouth and put the syringe in the corner of her mouth and she doesn't even notice. I think with some talent you could do that at the breast.

twinsmom - Thursday, 28 August
The picture was our attempt at a 2 month photo. We go tomorrow to try 4 months, hopefully we don't get a repeat even though it is kinda cute!

twinsmom - Thursday, 28 August
Olivia hasn't had any problems with the Zantac. She has been taking it since she was 1 month and I am hoping that she will out grow the dose soon and not need it anymore. The only issue with the barium might be some constipation. Oh, I always tell people not to be concerned if the poop is white!

Hello, I am a X-ray tech and complete these exams all the time. It sounds like he had an upper GI with a small bowel follow-through. First of all... high levels of radiation are not healthy, but these machines now days use much less radiation. You also have to consider risk vs benefit. If you will benefit from having this exam then the low dose of radiation he will receive shouldn't be the issue. So I wouldn't worry about the radiation involved. That exam could show reflux. The problem is that reflux sometimes is not constant so if your baby doesn't reflux the barium(white stuff) when the camera is on him the radiologist won't see it but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have it! They also look for pyloric stenosis which is a narrowing of the valve at the junction of the stomach and intestines. If this valve does't open properly that could cause reflux. I wouldn't worry about the exam, I would have done it for my kids!! My twins are totallly different, Olivia has bad acid reflux and is on zantac for it. She was really fussy, would gag and cough and then scream. The zantac really helps. Isaac just spits up CONSTANTLY. He is on Enfamil AR and still spits up but he doesn't act bothered by it so the doctor said that as long as he keeps gaining weight (he is) that some babies just spit up! Sorry if I rambled on!! If you have any questions write back!

ozbaby - Thursday, 28 August
My Dr insisted i drink Sustagen ( protein shake) as it had all the vitamins you need and will help give you great breast milk. I have a glass a day with a banana and honey or some coffee for flavour. Hope it helps.

suzi - Thursday, 28 August
the only thing the x ray rules out is intenstional twisting it does not diagnose acid reflux I do ultrasound and a Dr that I had maja see for it was a GI loser ordered it, and Im in radiology so I said well that doesnt diagnose reflux so ur ordering it to cover your ass, that you looked for obstruction I said do u think my daughter has one he said no and I said then YYYYYYY are you ordering it, i switched to another GI specialist love her so said acid reflux is diagnosed by parents discription like arching, frequent spit ups, refusal to eat, crying, awaking fregquently.. and YES the radition is not healthy.. so elevated, use enfamil AR or put 1/2 tsp of rice cereal for every ounce of formula/breast milk, elevated the crib mattress, no sitting in car seat other then when drving its the worst postion for them, no tight diapers or elastic, and Maja is on zantac and it helps during the day I put her on a pillow and keep a close eye on her.. her reflux got alot better now shes getting fussier so its time to up her dose in medicine, if you have any ? message me hope it helps

collsbaby - Thursday, 28 August
I'm sure your doc wouldn't order x-rays if they weren't safe for the baby. I hope everything turns out ok!

pawsitvemama - Wednesday, 27 August
I am sorry to hear about the reflux- i feel your pain there my diaghter has reflux- she never had to have xrays though, she just got perscribed zantac and it has helped immensly! I can't answer your questions abouyt xrays, but I feel for you and your baby!

hmmmchelss - Thursday, 21 August
Yeah, it has a smell. It's not too bad when you first make a bottle but afterwards the bottle stinks so bad. I've never tried allimentum so I don't know what that smells like, but Nutramigen is definitly worth it. It's really expensive though. To pay for it I had to sign up for WIC, so if you decide to try it I would definitly get a drs. note for Nutramigen and with a note you can get it through WIC.

kaylouise - Friday, 15 August
Thanks for the reply, i am thinking about giving Henry some baby rice from 16 weeks so one more week to wait. Did the rice in the bottle stop the reflux? xx

ozbaby - Sunday, 10 August
Thanks for your advice. I have been trying this and at first it made her cranky as she didnt know what to do but the hungrier she got she soon figured out she had to work for her milk. I have done this with each feed and she is fedding for longer each time before getting frustrated. Thanks for your help. I will keep doing it as i think sooner or later she will feed without the shield all together.

bkbanwait - Friday, 8 August
