Tuesday, 10 June Hi,
I decided not to have the test this time around and didn't with my first either. I had also heard stories about false positives and didn't want that stress because I wouldn't terminate so what would be the point? I think being young you're not high risk and if you wouldn't terminate with a positive result then don't worry about it! I'm sure your baby is just fine!! :) nazdaran -
Tuesday, 10 June I personaly think that it is a good idea to do the test. I am sure that your baby is just fine, but God forbid if something is wrong at least you can prepare yourself and the baby to deal with the problem. some abnormalities need immidiate attention so why not to be ready than late. I was like you very unsure to take the test, but after I talked to my family doctor he encorraged me to take the test and thanks God every thing came out to be just fine. flora -
Tuesday, 10 June Hello, I think its very much a personal decision. Im doing one because of my age and if there were something amiss then I would want to know. I think that if you are unclear about something then its best not to do it until you feel sure. Flora rachyg -
Tuesday, 10 June Hi i am having the triple screen test on Friday. Will let you know what results I get back. I suppose it is different here in Australia as the doctors say its wise to get the blood test done. windy -
Tuesday, 10 June I've been trying to decide whether or not to do the screen for Down Syndrome as well. I have also heard of women having false positives, and in addition to that, my insurance doesn't cover the screening. Since I'm only 27 and my husband is 26 and neither of us have a history of birth defects, I don't think we'll have the screening done. I have heard that there are many people on waiting lists to adopt a child with Down Syndrome because of the unconditional joy and light that they bring into people's lives. I'll try to think positively and prepare myself just in case, but have pretty much decided against the screening. DiamondN -
Tuesday, 10 June What I mean by "prepare for it" is if it does come back with any problems, then you can prepare for brining your child into the world being the most prepared as possible. =) Thats always important. Its sad to me that so many women seem to think that if they knew that the baby had problems they'd have to terminate it, I dont think that should be the case. But I guess everyone feels different. It would be VERY hard raising a child with downs or any other issue for that matter. Good luck anyways!!! DiamondN -
Tuesday, 10 June the reason I had the test was just incase, to prepare for it if the baby does have any issues. Terminating is NOT AN OPTION but I think it was a good decision to have the test done to prepare for it, if it comes to that. They say if it doesnt run on your mothers side of the family, then it is unlikely. Good luck dear!!! merarth -
Tuesday, 10 June if you're not going to abort then don't screen, but then again, if you do screen and something is wrong, it will give you a chance to prepare and learn more for when the baby is born... tribegirl08 -
Tuesday, 10 June we skipped out on the screening. abortion was not an option for me at all...so why bother? pregnancy is stressful enough without having to worry if something is wrong...especially when it may not be! anahi327 -
Tuesday, 10 June Hello, I'm from week 31 and I was reading your post about the test. I Didn't do it for the reason that to me It doesn't matter because if the test came back positive I'm sure I wouldn't terminated my pregnancy. So my advice is; unless your willing to terminate your pregnancy if it comes back positive, then Don't do it! and just Enjoy your pregnancy!!
Good luck! christina08baby -
Tuesday, 10 June No, we are not getting the triple screen tom. We don't want to worry. I'm alreasy stressed out about life as it is. erica78 -
Tuesday, 10 June I just had the quad screen done on Friday and I should know the results this week. My doc basically told me the same thing as one of the other mommies said... the triple screeen has a much higher rate of false positives (something like 30%) but the quad screen is much more accurate and if it did come back high risk the first thing they would do is an u/s to see if they were off on the due date because something as simple as that can cause a false positive. Neither me, nor my husband have any family history of that kind of stuff either, but I figured if there were something wrong, then this would give me time to prepare myself for it instead of being shocked in the delivery room. Let me know what you decide and I'll email you back too and let you know how my results came out!

Monday, 9 June Everyone I know has had false positives and it just put more stress on the mom. The baby's ended up just fine, and if no matter what your going to keep it then I don't think its worth the stress. Plus you have no history of anything. I wouldn't do it but that's just me. Good luck!! raechelle -
Monday, 9 June if it helps you to know i did the quad screen, but if i were to come up with a false positive i am not sure if i would have done the amnio. good luck BahamaMama -

Monday, 9 June i chose to have the quad sceen for both of my pregnancies. both times it come out low risk. the test does not diagnose a birth defect itcan only indicate an increased risk. my doctor does a quad screen which measures another hormone called inhibin-a. it is supposed to be more accurate than a afp (triple screen).the false positive rate for a triple screen is high. only 1-2 out of 50 women with high readings will proveto have an affected fetus. if you would get a false positive they would do further testing. i did chose to have it just incase i were to get a positive i would know more on how to care for my baby. i asked my doc if the rate of false positives were so high why even do it. he said that 48 women of the 50 that have a false positive result is due to more than one fetus,or an incorrect due date. he said if the baby does have it the test will not give a false negative. so i hope this helps you make your decision HaileyC -
Monday, 9 June I'm a complete worry wart too. And another thing that a friend that I have told me (She's pregnant too) is that what if there was a positive? It would seem that the pregnancy would not be "as happy" as it would if you didn't know... you know what I mean? Anyway, you're completely right! a baby is a gift from God and he wouldn't give you anything that you can't handle! Talk to you soon :) babytauri -
Monday, 9 June I agree! And then for those women to have perfectly healthy babies...they must've been worried their whole pregnancy and FOR NOTHING! We have enough scares, worries and panics as is. Just pray everyday for a healthy, beautiful baby and I'm sure everything will be fine. Besides, no matter what the doctors say, GOD is the only one who knows the real outcome! :) HaileyC -
Monday, 9 June Hello! I read your message about the testing. i declined to have any testing done. I'm 22 and my husband is 25 and we have no history as well. I went to my 12 week appointment on Friday and told the nurse that I didn't want to have it done and she asked "If you were to have the test done, it showed something bad, would you abort?" I said "Heck no!" And then she said "Then you don't need it". She said that she has heard the stories of the false positives, and that it happened to her 15 years ago. She was told that her baby was positive with down syndrome and then he came out perfectly normal. I hope that helps!
PS: The good side to all the testing is that you get more U/S's! But the bad side is your insurance may not cover all of it. And you'll have to take more time off of work if you work. It's up to you :) babytauri -
Monday, 9 June Hey! Why would the doc offer that type of test anyway? I thought they only did that for older mommies or those with a history of abnormalities? Now I'M confused! At 26 and no history, I wouldn't worry about it. The internet already gives mommies-to-be enough horror stories...as if we need something MORE to worry about! amandag7 -
Saturday, 7 June Thank you so much for posting that story! It had me tearing up to know that this little girl was such a fighter! maryw -
