Sunday, 13 Jan

We found out last week that the baby has a 2 vessel umbilical cord, instead of the usual 3. What does this mean? Hopefully nothing. But it can mean the baby has a congenital defect, such as downs. I decided against an amnio. So far, the baby is measuring right on target and the doctor couldn`t find anything else wrong, so I think my odds are good to have a healthy baby. Most likely, the baby will be born early and smaller, so I will be monitored closely with frequent ultrasounds. I `m trying to stay positive and hope for the best! :)

Had my follow-up ultrasound yesterday and everything looked wonderful! Baby`s growth is right on track (measuring 1 week ahead in fact) and all organs, limbs, etc., are perfect! I am so relieved! My next ultrasound is the end of March to be sure the baby continues to grow on target. :)

This is my first appointment since the ultrasound discovery of the 2-vessel cord. It went well! I`ve gained another 3 lbs., which makes 8 total. Not bad for the half-way point. :)The nurse practitioner said the 2-vessel cord is really a non-issue. The only additional testing I will need are non-stress tests starting at 34-weeks. I will have to go to the birth center at the hospital for them. The non-stress test will tell how the baby is doing and is a good predictor for the week ahead. So I `ll have to go in once a week to have them done. The test lasts about 20 minutes. If the baby seems in distress at any of the tests, they would schedule an induction, because the baby would be better off out than in.I have a follow-up ultrasound scheduled in March to check growth, at around 28-weeks. This may be the last one, depending on if the baby continues to grow on target.

Appointment today went well! Uterus is measuring right at 24-weeks, blood pressure great (94/60), baby`s heartbeat is strong. I`ve gained another 3 1/2 lbs., bringing it to 12 lbs. total. My appointment next month is the lovely gestational diabetes test. Yum! lol

Saturday, 22 Mar
I had my follow-up ultrasound on Thursday. Baby is measuring perfectly for 27 weeks! The baby weighs 2 lbs. 13 oz. :)

I read the comment you left for the poll I posted, I started showing with my first around 12 weeks. I have heard that with pregnancies after ur first, you show earlier. Iam a lil scared that I will be showing by my daughters first bday party on Feb. 23rd. I dont want to tell my family until afterwards bc my family will freak. I want her party to be stress free.. What do you think?

Hi! I found this about 2 Vessel Umbilical Cord and I hope it helps to calm you. 2 vessels in the cord

The umbilical cord of the unborn baby usually has 3 blood vessels - 2 arteries and 1 vein. However, for up to 1% of babies (and up to 5% of multiple pregnancies, or twins or more) the umbilical cord has only 2 blood vessels, 1 artery and 1 vein. The reason why the cord develops in this way is unknown and for 75% of babies who have only 2 vessels in their cord, they are well and healthy and have no problems. However, for 25% of babies, a 2 vessel cord can be a 'soft sign' of the baby having a genetic disorder. A 'soft sign' is a subtle variation of normal that in itself is not an abnormality, but when combined with other 'soft signs', they can occasionally indicate a more serious problem. Usually the baby needs to have several 'soft signs' to be more strongly predictive of a genetic disorder. If the ultrasound cannot detect any other abnormalities, then the baby is most likely healthy.

Occasionally, a 2 vessel cord can be associated with the baby not growing as well, or being small for gestational age (or SGA). For this reason your caregiver may suggest you have further ultrasounds as the pregnancy progresses to monitor the growth of your baby. This is discussed previously in reasons for ultrasounds.

Be blessed and good luck!

Well, Congrats on your pregnancy first!!

Our baby seems to be doing ok. He's growing quite nicely and we have been told almost every ultrasound that he's 'huge'... but he's right on schedule and weighs a little more then he should already. He gave me a little of a scare the past few days because I havent felt him move almost at all. The doc has me monitored and he's moving a little and heartbeat is fine so they said he's prob in a good position that I'm not feeling all movements and the fact that I'm prolly so used to the pregnancy now that I'm just used to the movements and it makes it harder to notice him move for sure.

The tests they ran (fetal echocardiogram) to make sure the heart was ok turned out great and they said he should be a healthy baby! We are very excited and pleased with knowing he will be ok. We know there's still no guaruntees on anything till he's born, but the reassurance of the tests are good for now.

I hope your pregnancy goes well and your baby grows and grows on schedule. :)

Thanks for commenting on my poll about a stretch and sweep. I'm not to sure why my doctors doing it, other then I've gained a lot of weight, and the babies probably on the heavier side. I'll only be 38w1d, do you think it'll still work?

babymamarai - Saturday, 12 Jan

I hope so (re: my poll on weight loss week after baby). I hadn't really been thinking about it, but then my finacee asked me how much I would lose right away and little alarm bells went off....
It's worth it though...can't wait for baby!!

Hey nan639, I was just reading a poll I had answered a few days ago about when to tell the world you're pregnant. You made a comment to the poster about not letting others put fear of miscarriage into people's head. I certainly hope my comments didn't come off that way, and it certainly wasn't intended if it did. My point was not that miscarriage can and does happen, rather it was be selective in who you tell you are pregnant to within the first trimester. Having to tell everyone and their dog you lost your baby is WAY worse than just going through a miscarriage and only having to tell a few key people. I guess you can only understand that if you've been through it, IMHO.
