It’s a Girl !

We went into the Hospital at 11am thinking we were going to Labor and Delivery to be induced by our midwives. They sent us over to the unit where Mothers rest when in high risk pregnancy, I thought to be evaluted or something. We waited for quite a while not knowing what was going on. Finally a nurse comes in to take some blood and do a stress test on baby, blood pressure, etc. She tells us our midwives were out at a birth all night and will be there at 1pm to induce me.
I didn`t eat anything, because the nurse said better to wait an hour into the induction to make sure baby wasn`t stressed by the cercidil. Our midwives came and administered the cervadil and broke the news that labor and delivery was full and I had to labor in Antipartum unit until I was 5 cm (this will be funny later!). I was quite disappointed, this was NOT a nice room, not to mention the other girl in the room, had tons of visitors and It was just kind of a yucky regular hospital room. So I was disappointed, but my midwives also let me know that I was only 25% effaced and still 3cm long. So they figured it would take too applications to get things going and they could only do it every 24 hours!!! So they said basically they would let me stay the night in the hospital and come back in the morning to do number 2 cervidil. Well it didnÕt turn out that way.

After the hour was up and baby was still fine with the inducing, I had some leftover Italian ravioli, very yummy, but not a good choice!!! We decided it wouldnÕt be a bad idea to take a walk to the car to get the birth ball. Well I started out with mild cramping and pressure on my bowels, and by the time we were back in the room I was already having to stop to deal with contractions. That was about 1 1/2 hr after inducing me.

After that I just had more and more intense contractions. They seemed okay at first, I could handle them by just breathing deeply through my nose. They quickly started becoming harder to deal with. It was really uncomfortable to be in the hospital and I felt weird laboring with the other girl in the room. After a while she left, as she realized I was really into labor. I really wanted to have a shower for comfort, but it was so discusting looking, I couldnÕt bring myself to. All the while I was hooked up having stress tests to make sure baby was okay and the nurses were checking on me.

Finally the nurse says she should check my cervix, because if I wasnÕt progressing I would need to have the cervidil removed, as I was having contractions about 3-4 back to back with only a 2-3 min break in between and I was really starting to lose it (okay I was crying!) She said I was about 3cm dilated and I think paper thin effacement. She went to call my midwife to let her know this was almost 5pm. She came back with the laughing gas and suggested it could help take off the edge without stopping labor. She thought that would be better than morfine, as that could stop labor altogether. But we had already chosen a natural birth anyway, it was still tempting. At this point I was really ready for a break and almost hoped the labor would slow down, just so I could have a decent rest.

I think the gas relaxed me enough just to increase labor more. It wasnÕt long before it felt I was in more pain than without the gas and having a really hard time dealing with contractions, especially being all loopy with the gas! Jared was great, he totally was trying to be attentive and let me squeeze the crap out of his hand every time, poor guy! The nurse was surprised by my level of intensity, so she check me again. As she did, my water broke, just a trickle, poor little girl had to swim in! She said I was 4-5cm and went to call my midwife. My next contraction at the end I actually felt like I had to push and I started freaking out, I was like, Ò WHEREÕS LUBA!!!Ó (My midwife!)
They were in a bit more of a rush now, they brought the wheel chair out and told me to get into it to go to labor and delivery room (finally!) I had one contraction in the chair, then was able to get onto the bed. I had a couple pushing contractions, then they were ready to actually let me start pushing. I think I was screaming, ÒSHEÕS COMINGÓ Finally my midwife got there and I continued pushing. They took the gas away, as it was making me nauseated and I was puking my Italian lunch (really regretted that one!)

I think it was only 5 or 6 pushes and the head was out, then a couple more and she came out. Sounds easier than it was, but they were coaching me really well, thankfully, it made a world of difference. The one nurse kept saying, ÒShannon, you have to listen to meÓ So I would stop screaming to listen, it was really helpful!

I couldnÕt believe how fast it all went, up until half way through, I wondered if I was even in real labor. I told Jared when we got to the hospital I wanted her by 8pm, thinking that wouldnÕt be realistic. It was 6:36pm and there she was, so beautiful and purple laying on my chest, my bra soaked in blood.
It only took a total 4.5hrs!!! My first had been 8hrs and natural all the way, the second incusing only 4.5hrs, crazy!!!

I had some trouble with my bleeding so had 2 shots of oxytocin, but managed only a minor tear that didnÕt even required stitching. After a nice shower in my beautiful room, I had to leave, not even an hour after weÕd entered the room. We were moved to Mom and Babe, to stay the night, where we werenÕt allowed to have Jared stay because it was a shared room again. By this point I had really had the biscuit with the Hospital for sure. We talked it over and decided after we were sure I was okay, we would just go home. Everything was fine, so at about 11:30pm, we were on our way back home the same way we had come only 12hours earlier, but this time with a sleeping Angel out of me and in the car seat in the back.

A surreal experience. WouldnÕt NOT recommend inducing because of the crazy contractions without a break, but so, so, SO happy everything turned out as well as it did. Adalia is an absolute doll and my milk came in after only 2 days. Since then, sheÕs been extremely happy and sleeping a ton. Not not through the night, but thatÕs just silly! Anyway, we are so happy for our new addition and so thankful God has blessed us this much!

My first child is Joshua George, he is a beautiful boy and he'll be 2yrs in August! My Husband is a Senior Pastor at a local Baptist Church and we've only been here for 9 months. This is his first Church and so it's the first time I've ever been "The Pastor's Wife" it's kind of trippy! But everything has been good so far, Praise God!

We are hoping that the little one on the way, is a girl, but we will be happy with any child and are praying pregnancy, delivery and especially Baby are healthy!

With Joshua we delivered at home with a midwife and it was a wonderful experience. I'm not typically the kind of person who takes risks (as that is what I considered people were doing who has home births) however, after being treated very disrespectfully by our MD, I started asking friends who has used midwives there experiences. Their good report lead me to turn to a midwife instead of a Doctor.

***To skip my Midwife promo, scroll down more!***

Midwives actually do both home and hospital births. They are trained in a four year University program before they are qualified Midwifes and are essencially experts in pregnancy, birth/delivery and post partam care.

When I used to think of midwives, it would resemble some archaic, dark age type picture of old ladies. Now I know that they are just normal woman, who care deeply for other woman and desire to see them experience something wonderful in child birth! I can't even tell you how many people have told me horrific birthing stories, and it just doesn't have to be that way. Midwives advocate for woman. They are all about informed choice, they give you the options and then let you choose depending on how you feel about things.

***More on my actual birth experience!***

When we went to my midwife for the first appointment after switching from our Dr., it was like a breath of fresh air! She took the time to answer my questions and made sure I knew what I should be doing to be the most healthy for my baby and myself!

Giving birth at home actually wasn't my first choice, it just happened that after I was already in labor, we found out the the nice hospital we had chosen was too full to take us and our other option was a hospital that I had heard bad things about and our Grandpa had just passed away there 3 days earlier. So being that I was so uncomfortable, the thought of leaving my home to give birth in that place, so unappealing, that I begged my midwife to let me stay at home to give birth. The other two midwives who usually come to help homebirths (legally in Canada requires 2 midwives) were already at another birth, my poor midwife finally tracked someone down and she made it 10 minutes before Joshy came out!

The whole labor and delivery only took a little under 8 hours and although I had hoped not to tear down below, Josh decided to come out with his one arm up and delivering the head and shoulder did cause me to tear badly. Then I was silly and did too much the first few days after birth and my stiches came out, so I didn't exactly heal properly. We're hoping to fix that this time around! So being at home I used no drugs, not even tylenol, and yes it hurt, but seriously, not something every healthy woman can't do!

So this next time, I'll be at home again! Planned this time :) And I am going to try the birthing pool, they call it the Midwives epidural !

So good luck to everyone, obviously not a lot of details in the labor and delivery part, but I'd be more than happy to answer any questions, I'm not shy about it!

I Just posted this comment of the 13 week page, but thought it was important enough to add here in case anyone was looking:

BACK PAIN! Just seen a lot of people writing about back pain and I thought I should share. One reason for lower back pain is not drinking enought water. Your kidney's are filtering way more toxins through you than before. We all know about the 8 cups a day rule, but it's more important in pregnancy for you body as well as for the baby. At this point baby is peeing and drinking the amniotic fluid, so it continually needs to be replenished and fresh! I found this out last pregnancy after suffering pain for too long, and after switching from crappy Dr. to awesome Midwife, I was enlightened! Hope this helps some of you :)

14 weeks

Well, I definitely look more pregnant now. I lost a lot of weight right before I got pregnant, mostly because I didn't want to get pregnant again with all my baby weight still on from my previous pregnancy! Anyway, since I haven't been feeling the morning sickness, I'm ashamed to say, I've let myself indulge much more than I should. I find it frustrating sometimes, because I seem to be hungry so much more now, but I just don't have time, with a toddler around, to fix myself healthy alternatives. Not to mention, I have been dealing with the whole craving aspect of pregnancy (yes! I'm blaming pregnancy, because I can!!!)

So I've been avoiding the scale. When I was still having MS, I weighed all the time, because I thought it was so cool I hadn't even gained a pound, then I hopped on there one time and had gained three pounds. So I havn't been back since ; ) I know I need to get it in gear, I 'm going to get out everyday to walk, and make sure I'm having all my fruit and veggies and 8 cups of water. That way, at least I'm filling up on good stuff. Anything beyond that shouldn't be too bad. I gained close to 40 lbs last time and it was SOOOO hard to lose afterwards! I don't want that to happen again! I'll keep you posted!

3 1/2 months: I just realized there was less than half a year till this baby comes! AHHHHHHH! I'm feeling a bit nervous for the transition from one baby to two! And there is so much I need to teach Josh before the baby comes. Such as, potty training!!!!!! Jared and I just spent the last week organizing the house, it looks great, but we are both a bit messy, so I really want to stay on top of it. I think it will be out of control with two kids if I can't remain organized!

June26th

I had my midwife appointment today and I wanted to share what I had confirmed. You CAN sleep on your back!!!! It has been a nasty, almost myth that the medical community has spread and put fear into a pregnant woman's already concerned mind! Apparently the artery to the heart that would be cut off by the baby weight is a major one, but you would most certainly wake up feeling nausiated and dizzy and would just turn over. No big deal! I didn't find out until month 6 last time and that was after 2 1/2 months of bad sleep, as I'm a back sleeper! Anyway, there you go! FREEDOM!!!

July 7, 2007

I'm so excited because we are going for our Ultrasound in 2 days! I'm trying not to get my hopes up that we will find out about Boy or Girl, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the little one alive and moving around. If you pray, please remember me this Monday, that we will get a nice Tech person and be able to find out the sex!
Thanks, I'll be posting the results when I get them :)

Ultrasound results:

It's a GIRL!!!

We are very happy, everything looked good from what I could see with my untrained eye, but the midwives will get the results in a week! It was so awesome to see the special one moving around in there. She wasn't in a position to get good pictures, but it's nice to have something to show Joshy. Hopefully he doesn't get scared, they look kinda weird! Thanks to all who prayed, it is much appreciated :)

God's blessing on you all for your exams too!

When Joshy was about 5 months old!

I can't wait :)

July 12, 2007

I had a cool thing happen tonight. We went out for dinner, so it was a little longer than usual for me to eat and I was really hungery. And Baby girl was just a boppin and kickin around! I think she was saying, 'I'm hungry in here, what's the deal?!' She went for about 10 minutes straight, which is WAY more than anything up todate and then about 5 minutes after the food came she chilled out! Pretty funny!

July 14th, 2007

I'm so excited because we are going camping this week! But a little nervous too, as I've been having enough trouble sleeping and being comfortable in my own bed with my nice pillow topper!! But this will be Josh's first ever camping trip, so I think I'm more pumped for him than anything! What a ton of work though. I think I over-did it a bit today, after doing all this prep, I was SO exhausted and my uterus under my belly was killing me. I laid down and she started to kick me, as if saying," It's about time, what the heck are you doing out there!"

Will hopefully find out from the midwife about our results from the Ultrasound before we go! I just want a thumbs up and I'll be happy!

Hope everyone has a great week!

July 31, 2007

Had our midwife appointment today and found out that my placenta is lying low. It's not actually over the cervix, so that's good and we are hoping the it will move up the side of the uterus throughout the next few weeks, but she said we'd have another ultrasound at week 32 to see how things were doing. If it is Previa, then I'm pretty sure a C-section would have to happen, that would suck, cause I REALLY want to do an at home Water birth! I've already bought almost everything I need for it! Please pray it moves up!

On a happier and wonderful note, the precious little girl is PERFECT!!!! I'm so happy, nothing wrong with her at all. Praise God!!! So if a possible C-section is my biggest problem, I'm okay with that! We are coming very close to choosing her name, we've narrowed it down pretty good, just need to sit down together and basically make a choice! I want to do that soon, so I can tell everyone!

We are off to Family Camp on Keats Island! Hope everyone has a great long weekend :)

August 15, 2007

We had a great Family camp! Then we spent the week pretty much celebrating Josh's 2nd birthday. He did the worst thing this morning though, I was sound asleep, at 7am and he comes in our room and climbs up on the bed and steps right on my belly and lands on Jared. I was in such shock and I told Jared what he did, he got so mad, I don't think he's ever yelled at Josh! I was too out of it to be mad, but I was in pain for a little while, just laying there to be sure she was okay. She's been kicking and moving as usual today and I haven't felt pain again, so I think we're okay, but man, that little turkey! He knows better too!

Sept. 2, 2007

Wow, I'm 27 weeks and 6 months pregnant today!!! That's so crazy :) This has really gone fast. I totally can see what everyone has been saying about the hormones. Yesterday I was a major shrew and there would be no taming!!! Jared was like, "You said when you say it's hormones it's usually something else." Well it was just blinkin HORMONES and I was in a bad mood all day! Of course lack of sleep and being physically and emotionally drained from the potty training, really doesn't help matters. It seems like any small thing feels magnified!

But seriously, Potty training. I haven't experienced anything I could liken so closely to Hell on earth, as that. Maybe when I worked Nights at the group home for a year and a half! Yeah, pretty close! But seriously, if anyone ever wants to know how I did it. I broke the #1 pottying rule, "Don't make them stay there until they go!" But it totally worked for us. I didn't see any alternative and I was at the end of my rope, but he's doing great. And almost everytime goes as soon as he sits down now!!! And all #2's in the potty! Almost ;)

But potty training was way more stress on me than I would have liked. It's sooo not healthy for Adalia for me to do that. So literally, the only project I have to focus on now will be decorating the bedrooms. But I have no idea what to do. I'll be praying for inspiration! At least that's a fun project. I'm going to take it easy now! Pamper myself a bit, and demand others do too!!!!! Sounds selfish, but I just need that right now!

Anyway, blessings and congrats everyone for reaching the beloved 3rd trimester :)

Oct 3, 2007

Officially less than 2 months to go now!!! Praise the Lord :)

But I don't really have anything more to say, just thought that was an awesome fact and figured it had been long enough since I'd written something here! We have our Ultrasound scheduled for week 33, so we'll find out then or I guess in week 34 if I will be having C-section or be able to do my home water-birth! That's the next big thing. But tomorrow is our midwife appt and then we start going every 2 weeks. Hee hee, getting closer :>

My sides have been totally killing me though. They get worse as the day goes on, but I can hardly do anything it seems. At the end of the day, if I'm not sitting or laying down, it really hurts. Just the muscles I guess, having to hold up the big belly! So got 2 more month of that I guess :( Only two months though :)

Oct 22, 2007

We had our Ultrasound at the beginning of last week and got to see that we are in fact having a girl! Hello Adalia Louise!!! We also found out that the blessed placenta has moved up the uterus, so I DO NOT have to have a C-section and we can do our home water-birth as I've wanted to do! I'm quite thrilled about this as one might be able to tell ; )

Also, I've taken the liberty of changing my due date. I'm officially due now on November 29th. I did not hear this from anyone, but I've got connections with the BIG Guy upstairs and I know he will let me give birth in November! I am also preparing to do as much self inducing things to get the ball rolling as well! For those interested in what you can do on your own, check out this link www.birthsavvy.com/doula/notes/induce.htm , but don't do anything until after week 37, when you're full term!

I've been feeling pretty good lately, for being so HUGE! I haven't been in nearly as much pain, and she hardly moves during the day. When I wake up at night, however, look out! She's a rockin and a rollin in there! It really hurts too!

Here's wishing everyone the best 6 weeks of blessed bigness and sleepless bliss!

God bless : )

Oct. 30/07
At our midwife appt early this week, we found out that in the ultrasound my amniotic fluid was low and apparently that's a worrisome thing, so I have another US scheduled for next week. At least I get to see my baby girl again! But still won't know for 100% if we can do at home birth. Not till week 37, which is cutting it pretty close, for my liking!
Also had a mild scare the other day, didn't feel Dali a whole lot most of the day. If course, right after we called the midwife she started kicking around. Not as much as usual, but enough. Since then she's been as active as ever, but it freaked me out! I'm not complaining about her moving too much anymore, that's forsure!
That's it for now, next update after Ultrasound, Nov. 8!!!

Friday, 9 Nov
Hey Everyone, for those who don't already know, we had an Ultrasound today to check on my amniotic fluid levels, because at the last US two weeks ago, the fluid looked low.

Today, I had 3cm less than before, not good. There's a fancy name for it, but it basically means that my placenta has started to shut down earlier than normal and that's why there is less fluid now. This can be dangerous for Adalia because there is less cushion around her now and she is more inclined to go into distress. If that happens I might have to have an emergency C-section.

It doesn't necessarily mean that is what will happen however, there's still the chance that she will be fine and I will go into spontaneous labor naturally. They are sending us to an OB in the morning, hopefully, and he will do a non-stress test on her and confirm that I am indeed low in fluid as the US found. From there, we will continue to do these tests twice a week to monitor Adalia. As long as she is not in distress, she is ok, I'll just have to be extra careful, but they won't let me go past my due date. If I reach that far, they will induce me.

One way or another the home-birth is out the window now :( But that's okay, as long as she comes out safe and sound. Please pray for everything to remain the same with her not in distress, so that I can deliver naturally. I would also prefer to go into labor and not have to be induced!
I'll give another undate after my appointment tomorrow!

Saturday, 10 Nov
Hi guys, just wanted to update from yesterday. We had our appt at 1pm, though didn't see the Dr. until 3pm!

He did another Ultrasound and measured the fluid up from 5cm to 7cm. He said it's still on the low side, but definitely not in the dangerous levels! The reason for the difference is mostly because of how she is laying and where they are able to measure it. She passed the stress test beautifully!

It was a very encouraging report, he said that she has enough fluid around her that she is protected and happy and that they wouldn't worry until it's less than 5cm. Also, it could go up from here. He also said that they would allow me to decide whether or not to induce like next week. But we both feel as long as she's doing well and things are in the safe zone, it's better to let things happen naturally. We will still be going in every week for a stress test and the Dr. said if we have ANY concerns AT ALL, to come straight in, that isn't a problem!

However, if things start to go down hill, I would be happier having her out safely! In reality, I would just love it if I would go into labor soon. I did have a real contraction last night, just one though, bummer! Anyway, thanks for your prayers and we would appreciate lots more over the next 3 weeks!

Wednesday, 21 Nov
Nothing new really, just that I saw my midwives yesterday and had an exam with sweep that was less than promising. It looks as though I won't be going into labor anytime soon, so I've just given it up to the Lord and will take whatever he gives me. If I don't happen to go into spontaneous labor this week on my own, then I'll probably be induced on Monday the 26th. We'll see, but I found out that my midwives would use a protiglanden tampon insert to induce me anyway, so I'm much happier about that for sure. One way or another, should be an interesting week. We have family coming too, so time always fly's then. And I'll have some help with Josh and the house, so nice!

The stress test today was great. It took her a while, but after some cookies she perked up and is still looking very happy in there, thankfully. Can't wait to meet the little girl :)

Blessings on everyone this week. Tick, tick, tick....

Saturday, 24 Nov
Had our appointment at the Hospital this morning. It only took 3 1/2 hours to see the Dr!!! But the fluid was now down into the dangerous zone, so he didn't even check me, he just said not to go anywhere tomorrow, because they'll be calling me in for my induction! So unless I actually go into labor tonight on my own, we will be having our daughter sometime tomorrow or the next day. The only down part is, due to the low fluid, I'll have to be monitored a lot, maybe even the whole time. This is such a far cry from my initial desire of having my at home water-birth, but in the same way, I know she'll be safe and that's all that is really important!

He said he wants me admitted as an in-patient and everything, so no laboring at home at all. At least I'll have time to get comfy, etc before it gets intense! I'm very excited, as now I know she'll be safe and I'll get to have her, and in November, like I wanted!!!

God bless everyone who has been so helpful and full of fun on this site. Please pray for me and Dali tomorrow as she comes into the world on her own. And I hope everyone else has a safe and wonderful birth experience.

I'll update next after she's here :)

Message to all This may be interesting to some of you. Seema`s email is seema.modhvadia@rdftelevision.com

Hi there,

I work for a television production company based in the UK . We are currently making a documentary for ITV1 exploring the issues surrounding pregnancy and eating disorders. The film will be a thoughtful and insightful look into this extremely sensitive subject.

We’re in the research stage of our production and very keen to chat to women who are, or have been, pregnant whilst having an eating disorder.

If you’re interested in having a chat or finding out more about our documentary, it would be really great to hear from you. All communication would be in complete confidence.

You can contact me on: seema.modhvadia@rdftelevision.com

Yes he is crawling AND pulling himself up and moving a step or two! Where did the time go?? My little man is just getting so big. He was standing yesterday and I went to support him and he comes to my mid thigh....already!! He's only 7 1/2 months old! Mo is teething right now and one of his two teeth has cut through the gum! He drools a lot and sometimes gets pretty grumpy, but it's not too bad really. I don't breastfeed anymore...stopped about 2 months ago. Mo just wasn't interested anymore and he was gumming me and it REALLY hurt! Gotta go give him breakfast now! Take care and be blessed!

Shan, I have to wait to see if the tumors go away I have at least 2-3 ultrasound and 2 echos a month so they can monitor the situation. After she is born we will have to wait and see if she develops any other of the symptoms which come with T.S. Again I appreciate your concern I am trying to keep a positive outlook. I really think every thing will work out. Hope all is going well for you to I will keep you in my prayers as well.

Yes, we are having another boy! I am all done now, we always said we would have 4. It is a little crazy, but since they are all so close in age, they are always playing together (or getting in trouble together). So your having a girl? that's fun! We are naming this baby Joshua. Not sure on the middle name yet.

Not to mention the fact that I had my regular prenatal appt yesterday and the midwife said that his head was in the downward position.

My pelvic pains have just started recently but I get them regularly now when I walk more than 2 city blocks. I went to the ER for my contractions when I was 27 weeks, but I was getting them even before that. I just thought they were just regular pregnancy pains, but when I finally went to the ER I found out that they were contractions. I still get a few every now and then. I guess sometimes im just dehydrated because when I drink lots of water I dont get any. So yea I hope i can keep him in until at least 37 or 38 weeks. But I just have a feeling that he is going to come early :(

Hi there Shan!!! Glad to hear the potty training is going well...finally!!! When your lil gal gets here, it will be so much easier with only one set of diapers to change!!! Congrats. I had a strange dream about my son a while back...aaaahhh...I was still in the hospital...cant remember why, but everyone wanted to get to church that sunday, and I couldnt go, and for some reason they didnt want to take the baby, so they left him with my brother....NOT GOOD!!! It was crazy!!! Anyhow...I'd love to see a new photo of your bump!!! we are getting so close now!! My appt is this Monday, and i am hoping that I can visit the dr every 2 weeks now!!! Have fun decorating!!! Wish I had the space to do that...oh...I'm getting the SAME stroller!!! Its the best thing I've seen!!! I told the ladies at Babies R Us that I was in stroller heaven!!! Cant wait to get it!!! Good luck!!! Kim

true, it's just easier when someone else does the cooking. I'm all about convenience.

It is hard to eat a lot of protein. I still have trouble with cooking meat. I can eat all of the vegetables in the world, but cooking the meat makes me sick to my stomach.
