Greetings! This is our first baby and we are super stoked. The baby is due on August 5, 2008. We are keeping the sex a surprise. I have had a great pregnancy except for 4 weeks when I was peering down the toilet bowl every evening from Christmas to the end of January puking my guts up. Once that passed it has been awesome!

26 weeks in and I have kept up with my exercise routine of almost daily working out plus I continue to eat as healthy as I can. I have completely toned down the intensity of my workouts, but doing 60 minutes 5-7 a week on the elliptical and Shiva Rea's Prenatal Yoga video. I feel a real strong connection with the baby when I am working out that is surreal.

I have started to get my mind right for a natural birth and signed up for a hypnobirthing class. I also am screening doulas to find a good fit for us. I am a bit of a "hippy" and my hubby is so not, so it has to be a good mix. We are giving birth at UCSD Birth Center in Hillcrest, CA. Really looking forward to birthing my baby!

Tips that I highly recommend to all my Mommas-2-Be friends:

(1) Exercise exercise exercise! To keep the body moving and the depression at bay. The body and mind need the energy because they are working hard and can get out of whack.

(2) Keep the fire burning in the bedroom! Make it happen as often as possible. The feeling of being loved I believe goes right to the baby.

(3) Buy the Baby Bargains book and read every word. I have gained so much knowledge and will save a ton of money. Love it! http://windsorpeak.com/babybargains/default.html

(4) Floradix Floravital Iron + Herbs (liquid formula) the moment your energy starts to wain, your iron count is low (anemia), or you hit the halfway mark. I take good prenatals and still needed the extra boost from an iron supplement. No constipation!

I enjoy reading the posts and learning what others are going thru. Thanks for stopping by to learn more about me.

Sarah

Hey hottie! Thought I'd drop you what my most recent post was; thrown it at all the mommas I've chatted w/ that I thought may be interested. Feel free to spread the info to other mommas as well. Anyway, here's what the post said:

If anyone's interested in donating cord blood to the National Marrow Donor Program, let me know and I can hook you up with the proper forms. At this point, few hospitals do it, but many doctors are willing to do the procedure for you (especially if it's a donation, some docs will waive fees if there are normal fees for private cord blood banking). You just need to fill out a questionnaire and order the kit to bring with you to the delivery. The blood is actually drawn from the placenta and there is no risk to you or baby. I'm very excited to have a doc that's happy to do it, has never charged (private or donation), and is proud of me for looking into it. Ah... I think I'm in love with her!!!

I assume you won't be hiring that doula!

goonieMomma - Tuesday, 29 April
Just found out from my doula that she thinks Business of Being Born is available on Netflix, if you're interested!

I LOVE the happy birthday idea in transition. May just steal that one... We'll be doing the beads from my doula's Blessing Way ceremony. She also talked to me about bringing a strand of Christmas lights to the hospital. If you want the lights out, it's a great way to let the nurses know you want it dim, but are accomodating them reading any monitors you may have. I took it to a new level: Our lights have a "slow burn" setting where they slowly fade in and out. I've visualized myself using them to slow myself down in breathing if I start panting too much through a surge. I've also got some other great suggestions from our class' birthing book. I'll drop them by when I get my hands on it again after work.
Now if only I could keep my mind on work instead of birthing; and it's still months away. I'm screwed!

Hilarious preeclampsia preventative. I wonder how many guys signed up to help with that study!!! Also strange I haven't heard of that in any medical journals. Sounds like your friend's doc and DH were in cahoots!
But seriously, I wonder what would make that "work." It's just protein and some prostoglandins, which topically actually help labor progress... now you've got the scientist in me really busy thinking!

Hey thanks for the website info! They have some really cool stuff. I'm going to show my BF and see what he thinks. So, the book you were talking about on your page, just out of curiosity what kind of stuff did you learn from it? I'm having a really hard time not going overboard with wanting my baby to have the best of everything and could use some $ saving tips =)

Hi hon thanks for taking the time to write all that, loads of good info there going to to go and look it all up. Just to many things going on in there at the minute just feels like the body needs a bit of help right now. Real interesting about the Omega-3 DHA & EPA stuff worth reading more about too. Enjoy your pregnancy girl! and thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Jo. x

Hi just wondered when you say i'm taking good prenatals exactly what are you taking? starting to feel really tired the last few days and keen to find out what if anything are other people taking. I'm in the UK by the way so we don't always have access to the same things as the US but I can try! Congratulations on your pregnancy. Jo.x

ALSO- re: keep the fire in the bedroom. Have you seen The Business of Being Born? I haven't, but learned in our class that a french doctor believes and recommends lots of orgasms for preggos... increases the oxytocin receptors on the uterus, therefore allowing the uterus to respond to natural oxytocin levels reducing the "risk of requirement" for pitocin. I think I found my new favorite physician!!! Sex (and not only sex, but must have O's!) as part of birthing prep, I'm game!

Had our first natural birth class; DH is understanding the two paradigms and is really STOKED (I never use that word, but that's what he is!) about natural birth. As we drove away he was like, "So, why can't we have the baby at the birthing center or home?" My response: Got at least 3000 smacks for a home birth, 7 for the center? HE brought up a doula!
The doula I'm interested in is at empoweringbirthservices.com if you wanna stop by. She'll be a certified Mongan Hypno trainer this month. I'll be snagging that book tonight. She charges an extra $150 to train you and makes guided cd's and the such for you to practice with. Think I'll train on my own and then tell her my plan. She said a lot of her hypno comes through on normal doula'ing anyway. Just knowing my husband supports the IDEA of a doula, even if for some reason we can't get her, makes me more comfortable. I LOVE the way natural birth practitioners talk about "labour". NOT labour... birthing your babe through "surges" not contracting. Blowing the babe out. Oh, sometimes the verbage DOES make all the difference and roses WOULD smell different if called another name (no one, to my knowledge, has ever named a rose hybrid anything like "Poopy pants double purple").
Take care, and my new "affirmation" for this week is "Roar like the momma lion you are" re. knocking down labour horror stories, shutting down the idea of med. interventions, and getting what you want b/c you demand it instead of asking permission to get it.
ROARRRR!

Thanks for the website path, will definitely check it out.
I will definitely look into acupunture too. (I should have thought of this but didn't...especially since my sister in-law is a Chinese Medicine doctor!!).
Thanks again for teh advice, it is much appreciated.

hI, Awesome. I would like to hear more.
I have never heard of Shiva Rea's Prenatal Yoga...
Is there a website I can check it out??
I am from Australia too (I noticed your from the US, so is it American - I probably would have to get DVD imported or something like that).

Sarah, I feel like we have some things in common. I am birthing my baby at home with the assistance of a midwife, all natural. I just got in the mail today the hypnobirth book by Mickey Mongan. I've always been an avid walker, but I wanted to get toned more completely and have my muscles obey me when I'll need tem most, so I just started yoga, and I' using a birthing ball with exercises. Plus, I really believe in the positive effects of eating healthy (though I don't always succeed) and using supplements. Aside from my prenatal vitamin, I am using Omega 3 (supposed to help baby be more intelligent by allowing more nutrients to the brain), Magnesium Complex (leg cramps), Calcium Plus Vitamin D, Raspberry (to help tone and soften the cervix for a better delivery), and food enzymes to aid digestion.

Best wishes.

Thanks for the reply! My doctor didn't give me any instructions. He just casually mentioned it. I have to go back to see him on the 24th so I will ask about it then.

I am a bit "hippy" in my birthing views, as well. I'm probably going to buy the HypBirth cd program and have HypnoBirthing: the Mongan Method on retrieval from my library. Also taking a natural birth class. We will be posting a sign on the door reading "PAIN MEDICATION NOT TO BE DISCUSSED IN THIS ROOM". I think if it was offered mid-contraction, I may take it. Hopefully we can get my DH coached enough to keep me headstrong through it all. Hate pain, but mortified of needles... so we'll see which one wins!
Wish we could afford a birth center; there's a great one in town (where I'm taking my classes). Also thinking of a doula, but I'm a bit of a stubborn A$$ myself, so dunno if we "need" one. Where do you get your Floradix? I was on Spatone (Wales) but it costs mega$ to ship in from Wales or Canada... Keep in touch!
Jen

I just read your post...it made me laugh pretty hard! Elderly? You mean somebody actually wrote that in your chart?! Outrageous! We're gonna have to think up something better than that. 'Rich with life experience' sounds good. AMA sounds too clinical. 'Elderly' is OUT OF THE QUESTION!!!
