Around
midnight following my due date, I felt a couple contractions, to which
I paid no attention. About 3:30am, I got a very painful contraction
(b/c I was lying on my back) that got my full attention, and so I began
to time them. For 7 1/2 hours, I had irregular contractions that didn't
keep a pattern of intensity, duration, nor timing. By morning, I had
been awake for nearly 2 days and the same contraction I'd had 5 hours
ago was taking a much bigger toll on my body than it had before. I
couldn't sleep through them and it was obvious to me that they weren't
stopping. It was, after all, the morning after my due date. I
eventually decided to go to the hospital. I had no contractions on the
way nor for the first 15 or so minutes I was there. The Dr. said that I
was not in active labor, but there was no use in sending me home, that
I was 40 weeks 1 day, and there would be no benefit. He wanted to break
my water and get labor started. I asked him when I could get an
epidural, and he said whenever I want it. (Now, please :] ) So lucky
me, I get an IV that hurt pretty bad, but an epidural while I'm not in
pain. I had a catheter, which was uncomfortable to say the least, and
he broke my water. We waited just a little to see if my body would pick
up before they started me on Pitocin. I didn't feel the contractions at
all. The epidural made me shake and talk funny, but at the time the
experience was quite amusing. We found out that we could take as many
pictures and as much video as we wanted. We didn't want to see any of
the, well, underside view of the birth, so we decided my husband's
cousin could run the camera from the back of the room. Well when time
came to push, the nurse didn't know our plans and placed my husband at
my right knee and his cousin at my left, and instructed them on what to
do during a contraction. Looking back, I can't imagine how it could've
happened any differently. I pushed for 25 minutes and met my baby girl
at 10:50pm. I had to have an episiotomy, which was painless. My husband
cut the cord and I held her momentarily. She scored a 9 on both the 1-
and 5-minute APGAR scores, both because her feet weren't yet pink. When
she was given back to me, I attempted to breastfeed and she latched on
perfectly. She is a very alert baby and loves to just look around. The
morning after I had her, she rested on my lap for the longest and just
looked at me. She was born showing so much emotion. She has red hair
and blue eyes, just as I wanted, a great temperament and is only too
easy to please. She goes from breast to bottle and back with no
problem. She's all I ever wanted and more. I AM SO BLESSED!!!
